Euler-Poincare equations are derived for the dynamical folding of charged molecular strands (such as DNA) modeled as flexible continuous filamentary distributions of interacting rigid charge conformations. The new feature is that the equations of motion for the dynamics of such molecular strands are nonlocal when the screened Coulomb interactions, or Lennard-Jones potentials between pairs of charges are included. These nonlocal dynamical equations are derived in the convective representation of continuum motion by using modified Euler-Poincare and Hamilton-Pontryagin variational formulations that illuminate the various approaches within the framework of symmetry reduction of Hamiltons principle for exact geometric rods. In the absence of nonlocal interactions, the equations recover the classical Kirchhoff theory of elastic rods in the spatial representation. The motion equations in the convective representation are shown to be affine Euler-Poincare equations relative to a certain cocycle. This property relates the geometry of the molecular strands to that of complex fluids. An elegant change of variables allows a direct passage from the infinite dimensional point of view to the covariant formulation in terms of Lagrange-Poincare equations. In another revealing perspective, the convective representation of the nonlocal equations of molecular strand motion is transformed into quaternionic form.

Time-dependent Hamiltonian dynamics is derived for a curve (molecular strand) in $mathbb{R}^3$ that experiences both nonlocal (for example, electrostatic) and elastic interactions. The dynamical equations in the symmetry-reduced variables are written on the dual of the semidirect-product Lie algebra $so(3) circledS (mathbb{R}^3oplusmathbb{R}^3oplusmathbb{R}^3oplusmathbb{R}^3)$ with three 2-cocycles. We also demonstrate that the nonlocal interaction produces an interesting new term deriving from the coadjoint action of the Lie group SO(3) on its Lie algebra $so(3)$. The new filament equations are written in conservative form by using the corresponding coadjoint actions.

We investigate numerically the dynamics of traveling clusters in systems of phase oscillators, some of which possess positive couplings and others negative couplings. The phase distribution, speed of traveling, and average separation between clusters as well as order parameters for positive and negative oscillators are computed, as the ratio of the two coupling constants and/or the fraction of positive oscillators are varied. The traveling speed depending on these parameters is obtained and observed to fit well with the numerical data of the systems. With the help of this, we describe the conditions for the traveling state to appear in the systems with or without periodic driving.

We consider an approach to the analysis of nonstationary processes based on the application of wavelet basis sets constructed using segments of the analyzed time series. The proposed method is applied to the analysis of time series generated by a nonlinear system with and without noise
Synchronization has been the subject of intense research during decades mainly focused on determining the structural and dynamical conditions driving a set of interacting units to a coherent state globally stable. However, little attention has been p aid to the description of the dynamical development of each individual networked unit in the process towards the synchronization of the whole ensemble. In this paper, we show how in a network of identical dynamical systems, nodes belonging to the same degree class differentiate in the same manner visiting a sequence of states of diverse complexity along the route to synchronization independently on the global network structure. In particular, we observe, just after interaction starts pulling orbits from the initially uncoupled attractor, a general reduction of the complexity of the dynamics of all units being more pronounced in those with higher connectivity. In the weak coupling regime, when synchronization starts to build up, there is an increase in the dynamical complexity whose maximum is achieved, in general, first in the hubs due to their earlier synchronization with the mean field. For very strong coupling, just before complete synchronization, we found a hierarchical dynamical differentiation with lower degree nodes being the ones exhibiting the largest complexity departure. We unveil how this differentiation route holds for several models of nonlinear dynamics including toroidal chaos and how it depends on the coupling function. This study provides new insights to understand better strategies for network identification and control or to devise effective methods for network inference.

We address the occurrence of narrow planetary rings and some of their structural properties, in particular when the rings are shepherded. We consider the problem as Hamiltonian {it scattering} of a large number of non-interacting massless point parti cles in an effective potential. Using the existence of stable motion in scattering regions in this set up, we describe a mechanism in phase space for the occurrence of narrow rings and some consequences in their structure. We illustrate our approach with three examples. We find eccentric narrow rings displaying sharp edges, variable width and the appearance of distinct ring components (strands) which are spatially organized and entangled (braids). We discuss the relevance of our approach for narrow planetary rings.
