We report a time resolved imaging and micromagnetic simulation study of the relaxation dynamics of a magnetic vortex in the non-linear regime. We use time-resolved photoemission electron microscopy and micromagnetic calculations to examine the emergence of non-linear vortex dynamics in patterned Ni80Fe20 disks in the limit of long field pulses. We show for core shifts beyond ~20-25% of the disk radius, the initial motion is characterized by distortions of the vortex, a transient cross-tie wall state, and instabilities in the core polarization that influence the core trajectories.

Defects introduced in ferromagnetic nanodisks may deeply affect the structure and dynamics of stable vortex-like magnetization. Here, analytical techniques are used for studying, among other dynamical aspects, how a small cylindrical cavity modify th e oscillatory modes of the vortex. For instance, we have realized that if the vortex is nucleated out from the hole its gyrotropic frequencies are shifted below. Modifications become even more pronounced when the vortex core is partially or completely captured by the hole. In these cases, the gyrovector can be partially or completely suppressed, so that the associated frequencies increase considerably, say, from some times to several powers. Possible relevance of our results for understanding other aspects of vortex dynamics in the presence of cavities and/or structural defects are also discussed.
We examine generation dynamics of coherent phonons (CPs) in both of polar and non-polar semiconductors -- such as GaAs and Si -- based on a polaronic-quasiparticle (PQ) model. In the model concerned, the PQ operator is composed of two kinds of operat ors. One is a quasiboson operator -- defined as a linear combination of a set of pairs of electron operators -- and the other is a longitudinal optical (LO) phonon operator. The problem of transient and non-linear Fano resonance (FR) is tackled in particular; the vestige of this quantum interference effect was observed exclusively in lightly $n$-doped Si immediately after carriers were excited by an ultrashort pulse-laser [M. Hase et. al., Nature 426, 51 (2003)], though not observed yet in GaAs. It is shown that the phonon energy state is embedded in a continuum state formed by a set of adiabatic eigenstates of the quasiboson. This result implies the possibility of manifestation of the transient FR in the present optically-non-linear system.
The dynamics of transient disordered vortex states in BSCCO was magneto-optically traced in three experiments: (i) during continuous injection of transient vortex states while ramping up the external magnetic field, (ii) during annealing of injected transient states while keeping the external field constant, and (iii) during annealing of transient supercooled disordered states while ramping down the external field. The results reveal front-like propagation (experiment i) or retreat (experiments ii and iii) of the transient vortex states, at a rate governed by the rate of change of the external field, the annealing time tau of the transient states and the creep rate. The experimental results are theoretically analyzed in terms of competition between generation and annealing of transient disordered vortex states. Extraction of the annealing time tau from the above three experiments, yields the same results for tau as a function of the induction, B, and temperature T. Knowledge of tau(B,T) allows for correct determination of the thermodynamic order-disorder vortex phase transition line.

Dynamics of magnetic vortex core switching in nanometer-scale permalloy disk, having a single vortex ground state, was investigated by micromagnetic modeling. When an in-plane magnetic field pulse with an appropriate strength and duration is applied to the vortex structure, additional two vortices, i.e., a circular- and an anti-vortex, are created near the original vortex core. Sequentially, the vortex-antivortex pair annihilates. A spin wave is created at the annihilation point and propagated through the entire element; the relaxed state for the system is the single vortex state with a switched vortex core.

The discrete shell structure of vortex matter strongly influences the flux dynamics in mesoscopic superconducting Corbino disks. While the dynamical behavior is well understood in large and in very small disks, in the intermediate-size regime it occu rs to be much more complex and unusual, due to (in)commensurability between the vortex shells. We demonstrate unconventional vortex dynamics (inversion of shell velocities with respect to the gradient driving force) and angular melting (propagating from the boundary where the shear stress is minimum, towards the center) in mesoscopic Corbino disks.
