We present an X-ray photoemission study of the heavy-fermion system CeCu$_{6-x}$Au$_x$ across the magnetic quantum phase transition of this compound at temperatures above the single-ion Kondo temperature $T_K$. In dependence of the Au concentration $x$ we observe a sudden change of the $f$-occupation number $n_f$ and the core-hole potential $U_{df}$ at the critical concentration $x_c=0.1$. We interpret these findings in the framework of the single-impurity Anderson model. Our results are in excellent agreement with findings from earlier UPS measurements %cite{klein08qpt} and provide further information about the precursors of quantum criticality at elevated temperatures.

Recent quantum oscillation experiments on SmB$_6$ pose a paradox, for while the angular dependence of the oscillation frequencies suggest a 3D bulk Fermi surface, SmB$_6$ remains robustly insulating to very high magnetic fields. Moreover, a sudden lo w temperature upturn in the amplitude of the oscillations raises the possibility of quantum criticality. Here we discuss recently proposed mechanisms for this effect, contrasting bulk and surface scenarios. We argue that topological surface states permit us to reconcile the various data with bulk transport and spectroscopy measurements, interpreting the low temperature upturn in the quantum oscillation amplitudes as a result of surface Kondo breakdown and the high frequency oscillations as large topologically protected orbits around the X point. We discuss various predictions that can be used to test this theory.
The interplay between non-trivial topological states of matter and strong electronic correlations is one of the most compelling open questions in condensed matter physics. Due to experimental challenges, there is an increasing desire to find more mic roscopic techniques to complement the results of more traditional experiments. In this work, we locally explore the Kondo insulator Sm$_{1-x}$Gd$_{x}$B$_{6}$ by means of electron spin resonance (ESR) of Gd$^{3+}$ ions at low temperatures. Our analysis reveals that the Gd$^{3+}$ ESR line shape shows an anomalous evolution as a function of temperature, wherein for highly dilute samples (x $approx$ 0.0002) the Gd$^{3+}$ ESR line shape changes from a localized ESR local moment character to a diffusive-like character. Upon manipulating the sample surface with a focused ion beam we demonstrate, in combination with electrical resistivity measurements, that the localized character of the Gd$^{3+}$ ESR line shape is recovered by increasing the penetration of the microwave in the sample. This provides compelling evidence for the contribution of surface or near-surface excitations to the relaxation mechanism in the Gd$^{3+}$ spin dynamics. Our work brings new insights into the importance of non-trivial surface excitations in ESR, opening new routes to be explored both theoretically and experimentally.
The structural and the magnetic properties of CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$ (0 $leq$ $x$ $leq$ 0.85) and CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$ (0 $leq$ $x$ $leq$ 0.4) have been studied using neutron diffraction, resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS), heat capacity, x-ray diffrac tion measurements and first principles calculations. The structural and magnetic phase diagrams of CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$ and CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$ as a function of Ag/Pd composition are reported. The end member, CeCu$_6$, undergoes a structural phase transition from an orthorhombic ($Pnma$) to a monoclinic ($P2_1/c$) phase at 240 K. In CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$, the structural phase transition temperature (${T_{s}}$) decreases linearly with Ag concentration and extrapolates to zero at $x_{S}$ $approx$ 0.1. The structural transition in CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$ remains unperturbed with Pd substitution within the range of our study. The lattice constant $b$ slightly decreases with Ag/Pd doping, whereas, $a$ and $c$ increase with an overall increase in the unit cell volume. Both systems, CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$ and CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$, exhibit a magnetic quantum critical point (QCP), at $x$ $approx$ 0.2 and $x$ $approx$ 0.05 respectively. Near the QCP, long range antiferromagnetic ordering takes place at an incommensurate wave vector ($delta_1$ 0 $delta_2$) where $delta_1 sim 0.62$, $delta_2 sim 0.25$, $x$ = 0.125 for CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$ and $delta_1 sim 0.64$, $delta_2 sim 0.3$, $x$ = 0.3 for CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$. The magnetic structure consists of an amplitude modulation of the Ce-moments which are aligned along the $c$-axis of the orthorhombic unit cell.

Dy$_{2}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$ a disordered pyrochlore system, exhibits the spin ice freezing under the application of magnetic field. Our studies suggest the stabilization of pyrochlore phase in Dy$_{2-x}$La$_{x}$Zr$_{2}$O$_{7}$ with the substitution of no nmagnetic La, along with the biphasic mixture for the intermediate compositions. We observed that the higher La compositions (1.5 $leq$ x $leq$ 1.9), show spin freezing (T $sim$ 17 K) similar to the field induced spin ice freezing for low La compositions (0 $leq$ x $leq$ 0.5), and the well known spin ice systems Dy$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$ and Ho$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$. The low temperature magnetic state for higher La compositions (1.5 $leq$ x $leq$ 1.9) culminates into spin glass state below 6 K. The Cole-Cole plot and Casimir-du Pr$acute{e}$ fit shows narrow distribution of spin relaxation time in these compounds.

In this paper, high Fe-concentration Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$ alloys were investigated using high resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) down to 10K temperature. The Fe 2s core level exhibits three features, two low binding features correspondin g to exchange interaction between ionized 2s core level and the unpaired 3d electrons. The high binding energy feature corresponds to the screening of 2s core hole by 4s conduction electrons. Our studies suggest high local magnetic moments on Fe sites.
