Using an adiabatic approximation we derive an effective interaction potentially for spatially indirect excitons. Using this potential and path integral Monte Carlo simulations we study exciton crystllization and the quantum melting phase transition in a macroscopic system of 2D excitons. Furthermore, the superfluid fraction is calculated as a function of density and shown to vanish upon crystallization. We show that the commonly used dipole model fails to correctly describe indirect excitons in quantum well structures.

We demonstrate experimental proof of principle for a stirring potential for indirect excitons. The azimuthal wavelength of this stirring potential is set by the electrode periodicity, the amplitude is controlled by the applied AC voltage, and the angular velocity is controlled by the AC frequency.
Spatially indirect excitons with displaced wavefunctions of electrons and holes play a pivotal role in a large portfolio of fascinating physical phenomena and emerging optoelectronic applications, such as valleytronics, exciton spin Hall effect, exci tonic integrated circuit and high-temperature superfluidity. Here, we uncover three types of spatially indirect excitons (including their phonon replicas) and their quantum-confined Stark effects in hexagonal boron nitride encapsulated bilayer WSe2, by performing electric field-tunable photoluminescence measurements. Because of different out-of-plane electric dipole moments, the energy order between the three types of spatially indirect excitons can be switched by a vertical electric field. Remarkably, we demonstrate, assisted by first-principles calculations, that the observed spatially indirect excitons in bilayer WSe2 are also momentum-indirect, involving electrons and holes from Q and K/{Gamma} valleys in the Brillouin zone, respectively. This is in contrast to the previously reported spatially indirect excitons with electrons and holes localized in the same valley. Furthermore, we find that the spatially indirect intervalley excitons in bilayer WSe2 can exhibit considerable, doping-sensitive circular polarization. The spatially indirect excitons with momentum-dark nature and highly tunable circular polarization open new avenues for exotic valley physics and technological innovations in photonics and optoelectronics.

We report the crystal structure and unconventional magnetic ordering of Cs_2Cu_3CeF_{12}, which is composed of buckled kagome lattice of Cu^{2+} ions. The exchange network in the buckled kagome lattice is fairly anisotropic, so that the present spin system can be divided into two subsystems: alternating Heisenberg chains with strong antiferromagnetic exchange interactions and dangling spins. Although the direct exchange interactions between neighboring spins were found to be all antiferromagnetic, ferromagnetic magnetic ordering of the dangling spins was observed. Magnetization exhibits a plateau at one-third of the saturation magnetization. These observations can be understood in terms of the indirect interaction between dangling spins mediated by the chain spin.
We explore attractive dipolar interaction in indirect excitons (IXs). For one layer of IXs in a single pair of coupled quantum wells (CQW), the out-of-plane IX electric dipoles lead to repulsive dipolar interaction between IXs. The attractive dipolar interaction between IXs is realized in a 2-CQW heterostructure with two IX layers in two separated CQW pairs. We found both in experimental measurements and theoretical simulations that increasing density of IXs in one layer causes a monotonic energy reduction for IXs in the other layer. We also found an in-plane shift of a cloud of IXs in one layer towards a cloud of IXs in the other layer. This behaviour is qualitatively consistent with attractive dipolar interaction. The measured IX energy reduction and IX cloud shift are higher than the values given by the correlated liquid theory.
We realized a potential energy gradient - a ramp - for indirect excitons using a shaped electrode at constant voltage. We studied transport of indirect excitons along the ramp and observed that the exciton transport distance increases with increasing density and temperature.
