A theory of photoinduced directed bending of non-crystalline molecular films is presented. Our approach is based on elastic deformation of the film due to interaction between molecules ordered through polarized light irradiation. The shape of illuminated film is obtained in the frame of the nonlinear elasticity theory. It is shown that the shape and the curvature of the film depend on the polarization and intensity of the light. The curvature of an irradiated film is a non-monotonic function of the extinction coefficient.

Manipulation of the magnetization by external energies other than magnetic field, such as spin-polarized current1-4, electric voltage5,6 and circularly polarized light7-11 gives a paradigm shift in magnetic nanodevices. Magnetization control of ferro magnetic materials only by circularly polarized light has received increasing attention both as a fundamental probe of the interactions of light and magnetism but also for future high-density magnetic recording technologies. Here we show that for granular FePt films, designed for ultrahigh-density recording, the optical magnetic switching by circularly polarized light is an accumulative effect from multiple optical pulses. We further show that deterministic switching of high anisotropy materials by the combination of circularly polarized light and modest external magnetic fields, thus revealing a pathway towards technological implementation.
An equilibrium phase diagram for the shape of compressively strained free-hanging films is developed by total strain energy minimization. For small strain gradients {Delta}{epsilon}, the film wrinkles, while for sufficiently large {Delta}{epsilon}, a phase transition from wrinkling to bending occurs. We consider competing relaxation mechanisms for free-hanging films, which have rolled up into tube structures, and we provide an upper limit for the maximum achievable number of tube rotations.
Superconducting thin films of magnesium diboride (MgB$_2$) were prepared on MgO (001) substrate by a molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) method with the co-evaporation conditions of low deposition rate in ultra-high vacuum. The structural and physical prope rties of the films were studied by RHEED, XRD, XPS, resistivity and magnetization measurements. All films demonstrated superconductivity without use of any post-annealing process. The highest {it T}$_{c,onset}$ determined by resistivity measurement was about 33K in the present samples.Anisotropic superconducting properties were evaluated by the resistivity and magnetic measurements. We will discuss the anisotropy of superconductivity for as-grown MgB$_2$ thin films.
Gray tin, also known as {alpha}-Sn, has been attracting research interest recent years due to its topological nontrivial properties predicted theoretically. The Dirac linear band dispersion has been proved experimentally by angle resolved photoemissi on spectroscopy. We have grown a series of {alpha}-Sn thin film samples in two types with different substrates and thicknesses by molecular beam epitaxy. To explore the possible exotic physical properties related to the topological band structures, we have measured the electrical transport properties of our {alpha}-Sn thin film samples and observed multiple superconducting transitions. We have identified the transitions above 4.5 K, besides the transition maybe related to the b{eta} phase around 3.7 K. The changes of the superconducting properties over time reflect the aging effects in our samples. We have also confirmed the strain effects on the superconducting transitions through altering the relative thickness of our samples.
We report on the results of a molecular dynamics simulation study of binodal glassy systems, formed in the process of isochoric rapid quenching from a high-temperature fluid phase. The transition to vitreous state occurs due to concurrent spinodal de composition and solidification of the matter. The study is focused on topographies of the porous solid structures and their dependence on temperature and average density. To quantify the pore-size distributions, we put forth a scaling relation that provides a robust data collapse in systems with high porosity. We also find that the local density of glassy phases is broadly distributed, and, with increasing average glass density, a distinct peak in the local density distribution is displaced toward higher values.
