In this paper we report a spectrometric approach to dual-energy digital radiography that has been developed and applied to identify specific organic substances and discern small differences in their effective atomic number. An experimental setup has been designed, and a theoretical description proposed based on the experimental results obtained. The proposed method is based on application of special reference samples made of materials with different effective atomic number and thickness, parameters known to affect X-ray attenuation in the low-energy range. The results obtained can be used in the development of a new generation of multi-energy customs or medical X-ray scanners.

We propose an innovative method for proton radiography based on nuclear emulsion film detectors, a technique in which images are obtained by measuring the position and the residual range of protons passing through the patients body. For this purpose, nuclear emulsion films interleaved with tissue equivalent absorbers can be used to reconstruct proton tracks with very high accuracy. This is performed through a fully automated scanning procedure employing optical microscopy, routinely used in neutrino physics experiments. Proton radiography can be used in proton therapy to obtain direct information on the average tissue density for treatment planning optimization and to perform imaging with very low dose to the patient. The first prototype of a nuclear emulsion based detector has been conceived, constructed and tested with a therapeutic proton beam. The first promising experimental results have been obtained by imaging simple phantoms.
In a previous work we have demonstrated the feasibility of high-frame-rate, fast-neutron radiography of generic air-water two-phase flows in a 1.5 cm thick, rectangular flow channel. The experiments have been carried out at the high-intensity, white- beam facility of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, Germany, using an multi-frame, time-resolved detector developed for fast neutron resonance radiography. The results were however not fully optimal and therefore we have decided to modify the detector and optimize it for the given application, which is described in the present work. Furthermore, we managed to improve the image post-processing methodology and the noise suppression. Using the tailored detector and the improved post-processing significant increase in the image quality and an order of magnitude lower exposure times, down to 3.33 ms, have been achieved with minimized motion artifacts. Similar to the previous study, different two-phase flow regimes such as bubbly slug and churn flows have been examined. The enhanced imaging quality enables an improved prediction of two-phase flow parameters like the instantaneous volumetric gas fraction, bubble size and bubble velocities. Instantaneous velocity fields around the gas enclosures can also be more robustly predicted using optical flow methods as previously.
We studied the inner structure of the nuclear reactor of the Japan Atomic Power Company (JAPC) at Tokai, Japan, by the muon radiography. In this study, muon detectors were placed outside of the reactor building. By detecting cosmic muons penetrating through the wall of the reactor building, we could successfully identify the objects such as the containment vessel, pressure vessel, and other structures of the reactor. We also observed a concentration of heavy material which can be attributed to the nuclear fuel assemblies stored in the nuclear fuel storage pool.

We have systematically investigated the energy resolution of a magnetic micro-calorimeter (MMC) for atomic and molecular projectiles at impact energies ranging from $Eapprox13$ to 150 keV. For atoms we obtained absolute energy resolutions down to $De lta E approx 120$ eV and relative energy resolutions down to $Delta E/Eapprox10^{-3}$. We also studied in detail the MMC energy-response function to molecular projectiles of up to mass 56 u. We have demonstrated the capability of identifying neutral fragmentation products of these molecules by calorimetric mass spectrometry. We have modeled the MMC energy-response function for molecular projectiles and conclude that backscattering is the dominant source of the energy spread at the impact energies investigated. We have successfully demonstrated the use of a detector absorber coating to suppress such spreads. We briefly outline the use of MMC detectors in experiments on gas-phase collision reactions with neutral products. Our findings are of general interest for mass spectrometric techniques, particularly for those desiring to make neutral-particle mass measurements.

We have investigated the status of the nuclear fuel assemblies in Unit-1 reactor of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power plant by the method called Cosmic Muon Radiography. In this study, muon tracking detectors were placed outside of the reactor buil ding. We succeeded in identifying the inner structure of the reactor complex such as the reactor containment vessel, pressure vessel, and other structures of the reactor building, through the concrete wall of the reactor building. We found that a large amount of fuel assemblies was missing in the original fuel loading zone inside the pressure vessel. It can be naturally interpreted that most of the nuclear fuel was melt and dropped down to the bottom of the pressure vessel or even below.
