The conclusion of the original paper was wrong, due to the incorrect assumption that the low-energy limit at the strongly-coupled point consists of a single, coupled SCFT. By taking into account the fact that the low-energy limit consists of multiple decoupled parts, it was later shown in arXiv:1011.4568 that there is no violation of the a-theorem in this system. Furthermore, the a-theorem itself was convincingly demonstrated in arXiv:1107.3987, and the argument presented there has been further refined. The rest of this paper is kept as it was, for some parts of the discussions might still be of interest. Original abstract: We exhibit a renormalization group flow for a four-dimensional gauge theory along which the conformal central charge a increases. The flow connects the maximally superconformal point of an N=2 gauge theory with gauge group SU(N+1) and N_f=2N flavors in the ultraviolet, to a strongly-coupled superconformal point of the SU(N) gauge theory with N_f=2N massless flavors in the infrared. Our example does not contradict the proof of the a-theorem via a-maximization, due to the presence of accidental symmetries in the infrared limit. Nor does it contradict the holographic a-theorem, because these gauge theories do not possess weakly-curved holographic duals.

Several counterexample models to the Nelson-Seiberg theorem have been discovered in previous literature, with generic superpotentials respecting the R-symmetry and non-generic R-charge assignments for chiral fields. This work present a sufficient con dition for such counterexample models: The number of R-charge 2 fields, which is greater than the number of R-charge 0 fields, must be less than or equal to the number of R-charge 0 fields plus the number of independent field pairs with opposite R-charges and satisfying some extra requirements. We give a correct count of such field pairs when there are multiple field pairs with degenerated R-charges. These models give supersymmetric vacua with spontaneous R-symmetry breaking, thus are counterexamples to both the Nelson-Seiberg theorem and its extensions.
It has recently been conjectured that the transport relaxation rate in metals is bounded above by the temperature of the system. In this work, we discuss the transport phenomenology of overdoped electron-doped cuprates, which we show constitute an un ambiguous counterexample to this putative Planckian bound, raising serious questions about the efficacy of the bound.

In a gravitational theory with a massless photon the maximum charge-to-mass ratio of black holes approaches the prediction of the Einstein-Maxwell theory as black hole mass increases: $Q_{rm ext}/M =1+ alpha/M^2$ for some constant $alpha$. We will sh ow that $alpha>0$ if below the quantum gravity scale $Lambda$ there are many degrees of freedom with a hierarchically small mass gap $log(Lambda/m_{rm gap})gg 1$. In this regime one can treat gravity as a non-dynamical background field and derive field-theoretic sum-rules for the coefficients of the leading corrections to the Einstein-Maxwell theory. The positivity of $alpha$ follows from the sum-rules. As a consequence, gravitational attraction gets weaker than the electric force among maximally charged black holes as they become lighter, and large extremal black holes can decay into smaller black holes.

For expansions in one-dimensional conformal blocks, we provide a rigorous link between the asymptotics of the spectral density of exchanged primaries and the leading singularity in the crossed channel. Our result has a direct application to systems o f SL(2,R)-invariant correlators (also known as 1d CFTs). It also puts on solid ground a part of the lightcone bootstrap analysis of the spectrum of operators of high spin and bounded twist in CFTs in d>2. In addition, a similar argument controls the spectral density asymptotics in large N gauge theories.
We prove that the Laptev--Safronov conjecture (Comm. Math. Phys., 2009) is false in the range that is not covered by Franks positive result (Bull. Lond. Math. Soc., 2011). The simple counterexample is adaptable to a large class of Schrodinger type op erators, for which we also prove new sharp upper bounds.
