We present results of temperature dependent measurements of dynamics of micellar nanoparticle - polymer composites of fixed volume fraction and variable polymer chain grafting density. For nanoparticles with lower grafting density we observe dynamically arrested state at low temperatures corresponding to an attractive glass while at high temperature the same system shows relaxation typical of a repulsive glass. For higher grafting density, the low temperature dynamics resembles more of a gel which crosses over to a repulsive glass at high temperature. Possible reasons for such fascinating dynamical transitions is delineated.

The preparation of neutron-optical phase gratings with light-optical holography is reviewed. We compare the relevant concepts of i) Kogelniks theory for Bragg diffraction of light by thick volume gratings, which can be used to analyze holographic gra tings with both light and neutrons, and ii) the dynamical theory of neutron diffraction. Without going into mathematical detail, we intend to illuminate their correspondence. The findings are illustrated by analyzing data obtained from reconstruction of nanoparticle holographic gratings with both light and neutrons.
The organization of nano-particles inside grafted polymer layers is governed by the interplay of polymer-induced entropic interactions and the action of externally applied fields. Earlier work had shown that strong external forces can drive the forma tion of colloidal structures in polymer brushes. Here we show that external fields are not essential to obtain such colloidal patterns: we report Monte Carlo and Molecular dynamics simulations that demonstrate that ordered structures can be achieved by compressing a `sandwich of two grafted polymer layers, or by squeezing a coated nanotube, with nano-particles in between. We show that the pattern formation can be efficiently controlled by the applied pressure, while the characteristic length--scale, i.e. the typical width of the patterns, is sensitive to the length of the polymers. Based on the results of the simulations, we derive an approximate equation of state for nano-sandwiches.
We present Monte Carlo data for a linear chain with excluded volume subjected to a uniform stretching. Simulation of long chains (up to 6000 beads) at high stretching allows us to observe the signature of tensile blobs as a crossover in the scaling b ehavior of the chain scattering function for wave vectors perpendicular to stretching. These results and corresponding ones in the stretching direction allow us to verify for the first time Pincus prediction on scaling inside blobs. Outside blobs, the scattering function is well described by the Debye function for a stretched ideal chain.
A set of uniform carbon microspheres (CS) whose diameters have the order of $ 0.125 mu m$ to $10 mu m $ was prepared from aqueous sucrose solution by means of hydrothermal carbonization of sugar molecules. A pressed pellet was composed by mixing CSs with polyethylene oxide (PEO). Electrical characterization of the pellet was carried out showing Ohmic current-voltage characteristics and temperature-dependent conductivity in the range $ 80K < T < 300K.$ The conductivity reached a maximum value of $ 0.245 S/cm $ at $ 258K. $ The dependence of conductivity on temperature was theoretically analyzed to determine predominating mechanisms of electron transport. It was shown that thermally-induced electron tunneling between adjacent spheres may take on an important part in the electron transport through the CS/PEO composites.
The weakly nonlinear rheology of a surfactant solution of wormlike micelles is investigated from both a modeling and experimental perspective using the framework of medium amplitude parallel superposition (MAPS) rheology. MAPS rheology defines materi al functions, such as the third order complex compliance, which span the entire weakly nonlinear response space of viscoelastic materials to simple shear deformations. Three-tone oscillatory shear deformations are applied to obtain feature-rich data characterizing the third order complex compliance with high data throughput. Here, data for a CPyCl solution are compared to the analytical solution for the MAPS response of a reptation-reaction constitutive model, which treats micelles as linear polymers that can break apart and recombine in solution. Regression of the data to the model predictions provides new insight into how these breakage and recombination processes are affected by shear, and demonstrates the importance of using information-rich data to infer precise estimates of model parameters.
