We use neutron reflectometry to investigate the interlayer exchange coupling between Ga$_{0.97}$Mn$_{0.03}$As ferromagnetic semiconductor layers separated by non-magnetic Be-doped GaAs spacers. Polarized neutron reflectivity measured below the Curie temperature of Ga$_{0.97}$Mn$_{0.03}$As reveals a characteristic splitting at the wave vector corresponding to twice the multilayer period, indicating that the coupling between the ferromagnetic layers are antiferromagnetic (AFM). When the applied field is increased to above the saturation field, this AFM coupling is suppressed. This behavior is not observed when the spacers are undoped, suggesting that the observed AFM coupling is mediated by charge carriers introduced via Be doping. The behavior of magnetization of the multilayers measured by DC magnetometry is consistent with the neutron reflectometry results.

We perform a theoretical study, using {it ab initio} total energy density-functional calculations, of the effects of disorder on the $Mn-Mn$ exchange interactions for $Ga_{1-x}Mn_xAs$ diluted semiconductors. For a 128 atoms supercell, we consider a v ariety of configurations with 2, 3 and 4 Mn atoms, which correspond to concentrations of 3.1%, 4.7%, and 6.3%, respectively. In this way, the disorder is intrinsically considered in the calculations. Using a Heisenberg Hamiltonian to map the magnetic excitations, and {it ab initio} total energy calculations, we obtain the effective $JMn$, from first ($n=1$) all the way up to sixth ($n=6$) neighbors. Calculated results show a clear dependence in the magnitudes of the $JMn$ with the Mn concentration $x$. Also, configurational disorder and/or clustering effects lead to large dispersions in the Mn-Mn exchange interactions, in the case of fixed Mn concentration. Moreover, theoretical results for the ground-state total energies for several configurations indicate the importance of a proper consideration of disorder in treating temperature and annealing effects.
We have measured the magnetoresistance in a series of Ga$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$As samples with 0.033$le x le$ 0.053 for three mutually orthogonal orientations of the applied magnetic field. The spontaneous resistivity anisotropy (SRA) in these materials is ne gative (i.e. the sample resistance is higher when its magnetization is perpendicular to the measuring current than when the two are parallel) and has a magnitude on the order of 5% at temperatures near 10K and below. This stands in contrast to the results for most conventional magnetic materials where the SRA is considerably smaller in magnitude for those few cases in which a negative sign is observed. The magnitude of the SRA drops from its maximum at low temperatures to zero at T$_C$ in a manner that is consistent with mean field theory. These results should provide a significant test for emerging theories of transport in this new class of materials.
We have studied the spin orbit torque (SOT) in Pt/Co/Ir multilayers with 3 repeats of the unit structure. As the system exhibits oscillatory interlayer exchange coupling (IEC) with varying Ir layer thickness, we compare the SOT of films when the Co l ayers are coupled ferromagnetically and antiferromagnetically. SOT is evaluated using current induced shift of the anomalous Hall resistance hysteresis loops. A relatively thick Pt layer, serving as a seed layer to the multilayer, is used to generate spin current via the spin Hall effect. In the absence of antiferromagnetic coupling, the SOT is constant against the applied current density and the corresponding spin torque efficiency (i.e. the effective spin Hall angle) is $sim$0.09, in agreement with previous reports. In contrast, for films with antiferromagnetic coupling, the SOT increases with the applied current density and eventually saturates. The SOT at saturation is a factor of $sim$15 larger than that without the antiferromagnetic coupling. The spin torque efficiency is $sim$5 times larger if we assume the net total magnetization is reduced by a factor of 3 due to the antiferromagnetic coupling. Model calculations based on the Landau Lifshitz Gilbert equation show that the presence of antiferromagnetic coupling can increase the SOT but the degree of enhancement is limited, in this case, to a factor of 1.2-1.4. We thus consider there are other sources of SOT, possibly at the interfaces, which may account for the highly efficient SOT in the uncompensated synthetic anti-ferromagnet (SAF) multilayers.

The electronic structure of doped Mn in (Ga,Mn)As is studied by resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS). From configuration-interaction cluster-model calculations, the line shapes of the Mn $L_3$ RIXS spectra can be explained by $d$-$d$ excitation s from the Mn$^{3+}$ ground state, dominated by charge-transferred states, rather than a Mn$^{2+}$ ground state. Unlike archetypical $d$-$d$ excitation, the peak widths are broader than the experimental energy resolution. We attribute the broadening to a finite lifetime of the $d$-$d$ excitations, which decay rapidly to electron-hole pairs in the host valence and conduction bands through hybridization of the Mn $3d$ orbital with the ligand band.
We investigated the magnetic properties of (La$_{1-x}$Ba$_{x}$)(Zn$_{1-x}$Mn$_{x}$)AsO with $x$ varying from 0.005 to 0.05 at an external magnetic field of 1000 Oe. For doping levels of $x$ $leq$ 0.01, the system remains paramagnetic down to the lowe st measurable temperature of 2 K. Only when the doping level increases to $x$ = 0.02 does the ferromagnetic ordering appear. Our analysis indicates that antiferromagnetic exchange interactions dominate for $x$ $leq$ 0.01, as shown by the negative Weiss temperature fitted from the magnetization data. The Weiss temperature becomes positive, i.e., ferromagnetic coupling starts to dominate, for $x$ $geq$ 0.02. The Mn-Mn spin interaction parameter $mid$$2J/k_B$$mid$ is estimated to be in the order of 10 K for both $x$ $leq$ 0.01 (antiferromagnetic ordered state) and $x$ $geq$ 0.02 (ferromagnetic ordered state). Our results unequivocally demonstrate the competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions in carrier-mediated ferromagnetic systems.
