We examine variability of absorption line strength of intervening systems along the line of sight to GRB 060206 at $z = 4.05$, by the low-resolution optical spectra obtained by the Subaru telescope from six to ten hours after the burst. Strong variabilities of Feemissiontype{II} and Mgemissiontype{II} lines at $z=1.48$ during $t=$5--8 hours have been reported for this GRB citep{Hao07}, and this has been used to support the idea of clumpy Mgemissiontype{II} cloudlets that was originally proposed to explain the anomalously high incidence of Mgemissiontype{II} absorbers in GRB spectra compared with quasars . However, our spectra with higher signal-to-noise ratio do not show any evidence for variability in $t=$6-10 hours. There is a clear discrepancy between our data and Hao et al. data in the overlapping time interval. Furthermore, the line strengths in our data are in good agreement with those observed at $t sim$ 2 hours by citet{Tho08}. We also detected Feemissiontype{II} and Mgemissiontype{II} absorption lines for a system at $z = 2.26$, and these lines do not show evidence for variability either. Therefore we conclude that there is no strong evidence for variability of intervening absorption lines toward GRB 060206, significantly weakening the support to the Mgemissiontype{II} cloudlet hypothe sis by the GRB 060206 data.

We consider incidences among colored sets of lines in $mathbb{R}^d$ and examine whether the existence of certain concurrences between lines of $k$ colors force the existence of at least one concurrence between lines of $k+1$ colors. This question is relevant for problems in 3D reconstruction in computer vision.
We present the results from a spectroscopic survey for intervening MgII absorption in the spectra of 381 background QSOs conducted at the Multiple Mirror Telescope. This survey complements our earlier SDSS EDR MgII survey, extending our results to lo wer redshift ($z simeq 0.15$) and weaker MgII $lambda2796$ rest equivalent width ($W_0^{lambda2796} simeq 0.1$AA). We confirm two major results from that survey: the transition in the $W_0^{lambda2796}$ distribution at $W_0^{lambda2796} approx 0.3$AA, and the $W_0^{lambda2796}$-dependent evolution of the incidence of systems. The nature of $partial^2N/partial z partial W_0^{lambda2796}$ is consistent with the idea that multiple physically-distinct components/processes contribute to the incidence of MgII absorption systems in a $W_0$-dependent manner and evolve at different rates. A significant decrease in the total proper absorption cross section is detected in our MMT data for systems as weak as 1.0 AA $le W_0^{lambda2796} < 1.5$AA at $zlesssim 0.4$. We discuss this $W_0$-dependent evolution in the context of the evolution of galaxy structures, processes including superwinds and interactions, and damped-Ly$alpha$ absorbers. We also consider the possibility that the observed redshift and $W_0^{lambda2796}$ dependence of the incidence of absorption in spectroscopic surveys for low-ion/neutral gas results from the effects of dust-induced extinction.
We wish to study the extent and subparsec scale spatial structure of intervening quasar absorbers, mainly those involving neutral and molecular gas. We have selected quasar absorption systems with high spectral resolution and good S/N data, with some of their lines falling on quasar emission features. By investigating the consistency of absorption profiles seen for lines formed either against the quasar continuum source or on the much more extended emission line region (ELR), we can probe the extent and structure of the foreground absorber over the extent of the ELR (0.3-1 pc). The spatial covering analysis provides constraints on the transverse size of the absorber and thus is complementary to variability or photoionisation modelling studies. The methods we used to identify spatial covering or structure effects involve line profile fitting and curve of growth analysis. We have detected three absorbers with unambiguous non uniformity effects in neutral gas. For one extreme case, the FeI absorber at z_abs=0.45206 towards HE 0001-2340, we derive a coverage factor of the ELR of at most 0.10 and possibly very close to zero; this implies an absorber overall size no larger than 0.06 pc. For the z_abs=2.41837 CI absorber towards QSO J1439+1117, absorption is significantly stronger towards the ELR than towards the continuum source in several CI and CI* velocity components pointing to factors of about two spatial variations of their column densities and the presence of structures at the 100 au - 0.1 pc scale. The other systems with firm or possible effects can be described in terms of partial covering of the ELR, with coverage factors in the range 0.7 - 1. The overall results for cold, neutral absorbers imply a transverse extent of about five times or less the ELR size, which is consistent with other known constraints.

Using archival data from the 2008 Lick AGN Monitoring Project, Zhang & Feng (2016) claimed to find evidence for flux variations in the narrow [O III] emission of the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 142 over a two-month time span. If correct, this would imply a surprisingly compact size for the narrow-line region. We show that the claimed [O III] variations are merely the result of random errors in the overall flux calibration of the spectra. The data do not provide any support for the hypothesis that the [O III] flux was variable during the 2008 monitoring period.

We performed a blind search for narrow absorption features at energies greater than 6.4 keV in a sample of 42 radio-quiet AGNs observed with XMM-Newton. We detect 36 narrow absorption lines on a total of 101 XMM-Newton EPIC pn observations. The numbe r of absorption lines at rest-frame energies E>7 keV is 22. Their global probability to be generated by random fluctuations is very low, less than 3x10^-8, and their detection have been independently confirmed by a spectral analysis of the MOS data, with associated random probability <10^-7. We identify the lines as Fe XXV and Fe XXVI K-shell resonant absorption. They are systematically blue-shifted, with a velocity distribution ranging from zero up to 0.3c, with a peak and mean value at 0.1c. We detect variability of the lines on both EWs and blue-shifted velocities among different observations even on time-scales as short as a few days, possibly suggesting somewhat compact absorbers. Moreover, we find no significant correlation between the cosmological red-shifts of the sources and the lines blue-shifted velocities, ruling out any systematic contamination by local absorption. If we define Ultra-fast Outflows (UFOs) those highly ionized absorbers with outflow velocities higher than 10^4 km/s, then the majority of the lines are consistent with being associated to UFOs and the fraction of objects with detected UFOs in the whole sample is at least 35%. This fraction is similar for Type 1 and Type 2 sources. The global covering fraction of the absorbers is consequently estimated to be in the range C=0.4-0.6, thereby implying large opening angles. These lines indicate that UFOs are a rather common phenomenon observable in the central regions of these sources and they are probably the direct signature of AGN accretion disk winds/ejecta. The detailed photo-ionization modeling of these absorbers is presented in a companion paper.
