Theoretical predictions of the magnetic anisotropy of antiferromagnetic materials are demanding due to a lack of experimental techniques which are capable of a direct measurement of this quantity. At the same time it is highly significant due to the use of antiferromagnetic components in magneto-resistive sensor devices where the stability of the antiferromagnet is of upmost relevance. We perform an ab-initio study of the ordered phases of IrMn and IrMn3, the most widely used industrial antiferromagnets. Calculating the form and the strength of the magnetic anisotropy allows the construction of an effective spin model, which is tested against experimental measurements regarding the magnetic ground state and the Neel temperature. Our most important result is the extremely strong second order anisotropy for IrMn3 appearing in its frustrated triangular magnetic ground state, a surprising fact since the ordered L12 phase has a cubic symmetry. We explain this large anisotropy by the fact that cubic symmetry is locally broken for each of the three Mn sub-lattices.

In 5d transition metal oxides, novel properties arise from the interplay of electron correlations and spin--orbit interactions. Na4IrO4, where 5d transition-metal Ir atom occupies the center of the square-planar coordination environment, is synthesiz ed. Based on density functional theory, we calculate its electronic and magnetic properties. Our numerical results show that the Ir-5d bands are quite narrow, and the bands around the Fermi level are mainly contributed by d_{xy},d_{yz} and d_{zx} orbitals. The magnetic easy-axis is perpendicular to the IrO4 plane, and the magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) of Na4IrO4 is found to be very giant. We estimate the magnetic parameters by mapping the calculated total energy for different spin configurations onto a spin model. The next nearest neighbor exchange interaction J2 is much larger than other intersite exchange interactions and results in the magnetic ground state configuration. Our study clearly demonstrates that the huge MAE comes from the single-ion anisotropy rather than the anisotropic interatomic spin exchange. This compound has a large spin gap but very narrow spin-wave dispersion, due to the large single-ion anisotropy and relatively small exchange couplings. Noticing this remarkable magnetic feature originated from its highly isolated IrO4 moiety, we also explore the possiblity to further enhance the MAE.
Exchange interactions up to fourth nearest neighbor are shown within a classical local-moment Heisenberg approach to be important to model inelastic neutron scattering data on the fcc kagome antiferromagnet IrMn$_3$. Spin wave frequencies are calcula ted using the torque equation and the magnetic scattering function, $S({bf Q},omega)$, is determined by a Greens function method, as an extension of our previous work, LeBlanc et al, Phys. Rev. B 90, 144403 (2014). Results are compared with intensity contour data on powder samples of ordered IrMn$_3$, where magnetic Mn ions occupy lattice sites of ABC stacked kagome planes. Values of exchange parameters taken from DFT calculations used in our model provide good agreement with the experimental results only if further-neighbor exchange is included. Estimates of the observed energy gap support the existence of strong cubic anisotropy predicted by DFT calculations.
Although spin injection at room temperature in an IrMn metallic antiferromagnet strongly depends on the transport regime, and is more efficient in the case of magnonic transport, in this article, we present experimental data demonstrating that the en hanced efficiency of spin injection caused by spin fluctuations near the ordering temperature can be as efficient for the electronic and magnonic transport regimes. By selecting representative interacting environments, we also demonstrated that the amplification of spin injection near the ordering temperature of the IrMn antiferromagnet is independent of exchange coupling with an adjacent NiFe ferromagnet. In addition, our findings confirm that the spin current carried by magnons penetrates deeper than that transported by conduction electrons in IrMn. Finally, our data indicates that the value of the ordering temperature for the IrMn antiferromagnet is not significantly affected by either the electronic or magnonic nature of the spin current probe, or by exchange coupling.
Electrical resistivity rho, magnetic susceptibility chi, magnetization M and specific heat measurements are reported on a singlecrystalline sample of CePd5Al2, showing successive antiferromagnetic orderings at T_N1=4.1 K and T_N2=2.9 K. The temperatu re dependence of T_N1 shows a Kondo metal behavior with large anisotropy, rho_c/rho_a=3.2 at 20 K, and opening of a superzone gap along the tetragona c-direction below T_N1. Both T_N1 and T_N2 gradually increase with applying pressure up to 2.5 GPa. The data of chi(T) and M(B) in the paramagnetic state were analyzed using a crystalline electric field (CEF) model. It led to a Kramers doublet ground state with wave functions consisting primarily of |+-5/2>, whose energy level is isolated from the excited states by 230 and 300 K. This CEF effect gives rise to the large anisotropy in the paramagnetic state. In the ordered state, the uniaxial magnetic anisotropy is manifested as M_c/M_a=20 in B=5 T and at 1.9 K, and chi_c/chi_a=25 in B=0.1 T and at 4 K. This huge uniaxial magnetic anisotropy in the antiferromagnetic states can be interpreted in terms of isotropic magnetic interaction among the Ce^{3+} moments governed by the strong CEF. In powder neutron diffraction experiments, magnetic reflections were observed owing to the antiferromagnetic ordered states below T_N1, however, no additional reflection was found below T_N2.

Nanoparticles (size 20, 40 and 60 nm) of Pr_0.5Sr_0.5MnO_3 are prepared by sol-gel technique and their magnetic properties are studied using ferromagnetic resonance and magnetization measurements. A comparison with the properties of the bulk material shows that the ferromagnetic transition at 265 K remains unaffected but the anti-ferromagnetic transition at T_N = 150 K disappears in the nanoparticles. Further, the temperature dependence of magnetic anisotropy shows a complex behavior, being higher in the nanoparticles at high temperatures and lower at lower temperatures in comparison with the bulk.
