We give an overview of ISINA: INTEGRAL Source Identification Network Algorithm. This machine learning algorithm, using Random Forests, is applied to the IBIS/ISGRI dataset in order to ease the production of unbiased future soft gamma-ray source catalogues. First we introduce the dataset and the problems encountered when dealing with images obtained using the coded mask technique. The initial step of source candidate searching is introduced and an initial candidate list is created. A description of the feature extraction on the initial candidate list is then performed together with feature merging for these candidates. Three training and testing sets are created in order to deal with the diverse timescales encountered when dealing with the gamma-ray sky. Three independent Random Forest are built: one dealing with faint persistent source recognition, one dealing with strong persistent sources and a final one dealing with transients. For the latter, a new transient detection technique is introduced and described: the Transient Matrix. Finally the performance of the network is assessed and discussed using the testing set and some illustrative source examples.

The recently developed algorithm FIRE performs the reduction of Feynman integrals to master integrals. It is based on a number of strategies, such as applying the Laporta algorithm, the s-bases algorithm, region-bases and integrating explicitly over loop momenta when possible. Currently it is being used in complicated three-loop calculations.
We present the development and validation of a new multivariate $b$ jet identification algorithm ($b$ tagger) used at the CDF experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. At collider experiments, $b$ taggers allow one to distinguish particle jets containing $B$ hadrons from other jets. Employing feed-forward neural network architectures, this tagger is unique in its emphasis on using information from individual tracks. This tagger not only contains the usual advantages of a multivariate technique such as maximal use of information in a jet and tunable purity/efficiency operating points, but is also capable of evaluating jets with only a single track. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the tagger, we employ a novel method wherein we calculate the false tag rate and tag efficiency as a function of the placement of a lower threshold on a jets neural network output value in $Z+1$ jet and $tbar{t}$ candidate samples, rich in light flavor and $b$ jets, respectively.
Subsurface remediation often involves reconstruction of contaminant release history from sparse observations of solute concentration. Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC), the most accurate and general method for this task, is rarely used in practice beca use of its high computational cost associated with multiple solves of contaminant transport equations. We propose an adaptive MCMC method, in which a transport model is replaced with a fast and accurate surrogate model in the form of a deep convolutional neural network (CNN). The CNN-based surrogate is trained on a small number of the transport model runs based on the prior knowledge of the unknown release history. Thus reduced computational cost allows one to reduce the sampling error associated with construction of the approximate likelihood function. As all MCMC strategies for source identification, our method has an added advantage of quantifying predictive uncertainty and accounting for measurement errors. Our numerical experiments demonstrate the accuracy comparable to that of MCMC with the forward transport model, which is obtained at a fraction of the computational cost of the latter.
Here, we report on observations of two hard X-ray sources that were originally discovered with the INTEGRAL satellite: IGR J04059+5416 and IGR J08297-4250. We use the Chandra X-ray Observatory to localize the sources and then archival near-IR images to identify the counterparts. Both sources have counterparts in the catalog of extended 2 Micron All-Sky Survey sources, and the counterpart to IGR J04059+5416 has been previously identified as a galaxy. Thus, we place IGR J04059+5416 in the class of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), and we suggest that IGR J08297-4250 is also an AGN. If this identification is correct, the near-IR images suggest that the host galaxy of IGR J08297-4250 may be merging with a smaller nearby galaxy. For IGR J04059+5416, the 0.3-86 keV spectrum from Chandra and INTEGRAL is consistent with an absorbed power-law with a column density of N_H = 3.1(+2.0)(-1.5)e22 cm-2 and a photon index of Gamma = 1.4+/-0.7, and we suggest that it is a Seyfert galaxy. For IGR J08297-4250, the photon index is similar, Gamma = 1.5+/-0.8, but the source is highly absorbed (N_H = 6.1(+10.1)(-4.3)e23 cm-2).

This paper studies the problem of Person Re-Identification (ReID)for large-scale applications. Recent research efforts have been devoted to building complicated part models, which introduce considerably high computational cost and memory consumption, inhibiting its practicability in large-scale applications. This paper aims to develop a novel learning strategy to find efficient feature embeddings while maintaining the balance of accuracy and model complexity. More specifically, we find by enhancing the classical triplet loss together with cross-entropy loss, our method can explore the hard examples and build a discriminant feature embedding yet compact enough for large-scale applications. Our method is carried out progressively using Bayesian optimization, and we call it the Progressive Learning Algorithm (PLA). Extensive experiments on three large-scale datasets show that our PLA is comparable or better than the-state-of-the-arts. Especially, on the challenging Market-1501 dataset, we achieve Rank-1=94.7%/mAP=89.4% while saving at least 30% parameters than strong part models.
