Using the Crank-Nicholson method, we study the evolution of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice and harmonic trap. The condensate is excited by displacing it from the center of the harmonic trap. The mean field plays an important role in the Bloch-like oscillations that occur after sufficiently large initial displacement. We find that a moderate mean field significantly suppresses the dispersion of the condensate in momentum space. When the mean field becomes large, soliton and vortex structures appear in the condensate wavefunction.

We discuss the method for the measurement of the gravity acceleration g by means of Bloch oscillations of an accelerated BEC in an optical lattice. This method has a theoretical critical point due to the fact that the period of the Bloch oscillations depends, in principle, on the initial shape of the BEC wavepacket. Here, by making use of the nearest-neighbor model for the numerical analysis of the BEC wavefunction, we show that in real experiments the period of the Bloch oscillations does not really depend on the shape of the initial wavepacket and that the relative uncertainty, due to the fact that the initial shape of the wavepacket may be asymmetrical, is smaller than the one due to experimental errors. Furthermore, we also show that the relation between the oscillation period and the scattering length of the BECs atoms is linear; this fact suggest us a new experimental procedure for the measurement of the scattering length of atoms.

The spatial self-organization of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a high-finesse linear optical cavity is discussed. The condensate atoms are laser-driven from the side and scatter photons into the cavity. Above a critical pump intensity the homog eneous condensate evolves into a stable pattern bound by the cavity field. The transition point is determined analytically from a mean-field theory. We calculate the lowest lying Bogoliubov excitations of the coupled BEC-cavity system and the quantum depletion due to the atom-field coupling.
A Bose-Einstein condensate is dispersively coupled to a single mode of an ultra-high finesse optical cavity. The system is governed by strong interactions between the atomic motion and the light field even at the level of single quanta. While coheren tly pumping the cavity mode the condensate is subject to the cavity optical lattice potential whose depth depends nonlinearly on the atomic density distribution. We observe bistability already below the single photon level and strong back-action dynamics which tunes the system periodically out of resonance.
We develop a mean-field model describing the Hamiltonian interaction of ultracold atoms and the optical field in a cavity. The Bose-Einstein condensate is properly defined by means of a grand-canonical approach. The model is efficient because only th e relevant excitation modes are taken into account. However, the model goes beyond the two-mode subspace necessary to describe the self-organization quantum phase transition observed recently. We calculate all the second-order correlations of the coupled atom field and radiation field hybrid bosonic system, including the entanglement between the two types of fields.

A self-consistent mean-field theory for bosons for T>0 is used to reconcile predictions of collapse with recent observations of Bose-Einstein condensation of 7Li. Eigenfunctions of a (non-separable) Hamiltonian that includes the anisotropic external trap field and atom-atom interactions are obtained by an iteration process. A sum over the Bose distribution, and the ``alternating direction implicit algorithm are used. Near Tc, the ensemble exhibits a localized condensate composed of atoms in the few lowest states. For lower T, numerical instability indicates collapse to a more dense phase.
