We study the weighted heat trace asymptotics of an operator of Laplace type with Dirichlet boundary conditions where the weight function exhibits radial blowup. We give formulas for the first few terms in the expansion in terms of geometrical data.

We study the singular perturbation of an elastic energy with a singular weight. The minimization of this energy results in a multi-scale pattern formation. We derive an energy scaling law in terms of the perturbation parameter and prove that, althoug h one cannot expect periodicity of minimizers, the energy of a minimizer is uniformly distributed across the sample. Finally, following the approach developed by Alberti and M{u}ller in 2001 we prove that a sequence of minimizers of the perturbed energies converges to a Young measure supported on functions of slope $pm 1$ and of period depending on the location in the domain and the weights in the energy.

We study the Metropolis algorithm on a bounded connected domain $Omega$ of the euclidean space with proposal kernel localized at a small scale $h > 0$. We consider the case of a domain $Omega$ that may have cusp singularities. For small values of the parameter $h$ we prove the existence of a spectral gap $g(h)$ and study the behavior of $g(h)$ when $h$ goes to zero. As a consequence, we obtain exponentially fast return to equilibrium in total variation distance.
In this paper we analyze a nonlinear parabolic equation characterized by a singular diffusion term describing very fast diffusion effects. The equation is settled in a smooth bounded three-dimensional domain and complemented with a general boundary c ondition of dynamic type. This type of condition prescribes some kind of mass conservation; hence extinction effects are not expected for solutions that emanate from strictly positive initial data. Our main results regard existence of weak solutions, instantaneous regularization properties, long-time behavior, and, under special conditions, uniqueness.

The asymptotic expansion of the heat-kernel for small values of its argument has been studied in many different cases and has been applied to 1-loop calculations in Quantum Field Theory. In this thesis we consider this asymptotic behavior for certain singular differential operators which can be related to quantum fields on manifolds with conical singularities. Our main result is that, due to the existence of this singularity and of infinitely many boundary conditions of physical relevance related to the admissible behavior of the fields on the singular point, the heat-kernel has an unusual asymptotic expansion. We describe examples where the heat-kernel admits an asymptotic expansion in powers of its argument whose exponents depend on external parameters. As far as we know, this kind of asymptotics had not been found and therefore its physical consequences are still unexplored.
Weight systems on chord diagrams play a central role in knot theory and Chern-Simons theory; and more recently in stringy quantum gravity. We highlight that the noncommutative algebra of horizontal chord diagrams is canonically a star-algebra, and as k which weight systems are positive with respect to this structure; hence we ask: Which weight systems are quantum states, if horizontal chord diagrams are quantum observables? We observe that the fundamental gl(n)-weight systems on horizontal chord diagrams with N strands may be identified with the Cayley distance kernel at inverse temperature beta=ln(n) on the symmetric group on N elements. In contrast to related kernels like the Mallows kernel, the positivity of the Cayley distance kernel had remained open. We characterize its phases of indefinite, semi-definite and definite positivity, in dependence of the inverse temperature beta; and we prove that the Cayley distance kernel is positive (semi-)definite at beta=ln(n) for all n=1,2,3,... In particular, this proves that all fundamental gl(n)-weight systems are quantum states, and hence so are all their convex combinations. We close with briefly recalling how, under our Hypothesis H, this result impacts on the identification of bound states of multiple M5-branes.
