The hyperspherical harmonic (HH) method has been widely applied in recent times to the study of the bound states, using the Rayleigh-Ritz variational principle, and of low-energy scattering processes, using the Kohn variational principle, of A=3 and 4 nuclear systems. When the wave function of the system is expanded over a sufficiently large set of HH basis functions, containing or not correlation factors, quite accurate results can be obtained for the observables of interest. In this paper, the main aspects of the method are discussed together with its application to the A=3 and 4 nuclear bound and zero-energy scattering states. Results for a variety of nucleon-nucleon (NN) and three-nucleon (3N) local or non-local interactions are reported. In particular, NN and 3N interactions derived in the framework of the chiral effective field theory and NN potentials from which the high momentum components have been removed, as recently presented in the literature, are considered for the first time within the context of the HH method. The purpose of this paper is two-fold. First, to present a complete description of the HH method for bound and scattering states, including also detailed formulas for the computation of the matrix elements of the NN and 3N interactions. Second, to report accurate results for bound and zero-energy scattering states obtained with the most commonly used interaction models. These results can be useful for comparison with those obtained by other techniques and are a significant test for different future approaches to such problems.

We examine the extent to which the properties of three-nucleon bound states are well-reproduced in the limit that nuclear forces satisfy Wigners SU(4) (spin-isospin) symmetry. To do this we compute the charge radii up to next-to-leading order (NLO) i n an effective field theory (EFT) that is an expansion in powers of $R/a$, with $R$ the range of the nuclear force and $a$ the nucleon-nucleon ($N!N$) scattering lengths. In the Wigner-SU(4) limit, the triton and Helium-3 point charge radii are equal. At NLO in the range expansion both are $1.66$ fm. Adding the first-order corrections due to the breaking of Wigner symmetry in the $N!N$ scattering lengths gives a ${}^3mathrm{H}$ point charge radius of $1.58$ fm, which is remarkably close to the experimental number, $1.5978pm0.040$ fm (Angeli and Marinova in At Data Nucl Data Tables 99:69-95, 2013). For the ${}^3mathrm{He}$ point charge radius we find $1.70$ fm, about 4% away from the experimental value of $1.77527pm0.0054$ fm (Angeli and Marinova 2013). We also examine the Faddeev components that enter the tri-nucleon wave function and find that an expansion of them in powers of the symmetry-breaking parameter converges rapidly. Wigners SU(4) symmetry is thus a useful starting point for understanding tri-nucleon bound-state properties.
The Bethe-Salpeter equation for three bosons with zero-range interaction is solved for the first time. For comparison the light-front equation is also solved. The input is the two-body scattering length and the outputs are the three-body binding ener gies, Bethe-Salpeter amplitudes and light-front wave functions. Three different regimes are analyzed: ({it i}) For weak enough two-body interaction the three-body system is unbound. ({it ii}) For stronger two-body interaction a three-body bound state appears. It provides an interesting example of a deeply bound Borromean system. ({it iii}) For even stronger two-body interaction this state becomes unphysical with a negative mass squared. However, another physical (excited) state appears, found previously in light-front calculations. The Bethe-Salpeter approach implicitly incorporates three-body forces of relativistic origin, which are attractive and increase the binding energy.
We describe bound states, resonances and elastic scattering of light ions using a $delta$-shell potential. Focusing on low-energy data such as energies of bound states and resonances, charge radii, asymptotic normalization coefficients, effective-ran ge parameters, and phase shifts, we adjust the two parameters of the potential to some of these observables and make predictions for the nuclear systems $d+alpha$, $mbox{$^3$He}+alpha$, $mbox{$^3$He}+alpha$, $alpha+alpha$, and $p+mbox{$^{16}$O}$. We identify relevant momentum scales for Coulomb halo nuclei and propose how to apply systematic corrections to the potentials. This allows us to quantify statistical and systematic uncertainties. We present a constructive criticism of Coulomb halo effective field theory and compute the unknown charge radius of $^{17}$F.

In the past, several efficient methods have been developed to solve the Schroedinger equation for four-nucleon bound states accurately. These are the Faddeev-Yakubovsky, the coupled-rearrangement-channel Gaussian-basis variational, the stochastic var iational, the hyperspherical variational, the Greens function Monte Carlo, the no-core shell model and the effective interaction hyperspherical harmonic methods. In this article we compare the energy eigenvalue results and some wave function properties using the realistic AV8 NN interaction. The results of all schemes agree very well showing the high accuracy of our present ability to calculate the four-nucleon bound state.

Nonperturbative polaron variational methods are applied, within the so-called particle or worldline representation of relativistic field theory, to study scattering in the context of the scalar Wick - Cutkosky model. Important features of the variati onal calculation are that it is a controlled approximation scheme valid for arbitrary coupling strengths, the Green functions have all the cuts and poles expected for the exact result at any order in perturbation theory and that the variational parameters are simultaneously sensitive to the infrared as well as the ultraviolet behaviour of the theory. We generalize the previously used quadratic trial action by allowing more freedom for off-shell propagation without a change in the on-shell variational equations and evaluate the scattering amplitude at first order in the variational scheme. Particular attention is paid to the $s$-channel scattering near threshold because here non-perturbative effects can be large. We check the unitarity of a our numerical calculation and find it greatly improved compared to perturbation theory and to the zeroth order variational results.
