Inverse bremsstrahlung cross section estimated within evolving plasmas using effective ion potentials

In this paper we estimate the total cross sections for field stimulated photoemissions and photoabsorptions by quasi-free electrons within a non-equilibrium plasma evolving from the strong coupling to the weak coupling regime. Such transition may occur within laser-created plasmas, when the initially created plasma is cold but the heating of the plasma by the laser field is efficient. In particular, such a transition may occur within plasmas created by intense VUV radiation from a FEL as indicated by the results of the first experiments performed at the FLASH facility at DESY. In order to estimate the inverse bremsstrahlung cross sections, we use point-like and effective atomic potentials. For ions modelled as point-like charges, the total cross sections are strongly affected by the changing plasma environment. The maximal change of the cross sections may be of the order of 60 at the change of the plasma parameters (inverse Debye length, kappa, and the electron density, rho_e), in the range: kappa=0-3 A^{-1} and rho_e=0.01-1 A^{-1}. These ranges correspond to the physical conditions within the plasmas created during the first cluster experiments performed at the FLASH facility at DESY. In contrast, for the effective atomic potentials the total cross sections for photoemission and photoabsorption change only by a factor of 7 at most at the same plasma parameter range. Our results show that the inverse bremsstrahlung cross section estimated with the effective atomic potentials is not much affected by the plasma environment. This observation validates the previous estimations of the enhanced heating effect. This is important as this effect may be responsible for high energy absorption within clusters irradiated with VUV radiation.

We investigate the rates for multielectron recombination within a dense plasma environment in local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE). We find that these multielectron recombination rates can be high within dense plasmas, and they should be treated in the simulations of the plasmas created by intense radiation, in particular for plasmas created by intense VUV radiation from free-electron-laser (FEL) or for modelling the inertial confinement fusion (ICF) plasmas.
Net ionization and net capture cross-section calculations are presented for proton collisions from methane molecules and the DNA/RNA nucleobases adenine, cytosine, guanine, thymine, and uracil. We use the recently introduced independent-atom-model pi xel counting method to calculate these cross sections in the 10 keV to 10 MeV impact energy range and compare them with results obtained from the simpler additivity rule, a previously used complete-neglect-of-differential-overlap method, and with experimental data and previous calculations where available. It is found that all theoretical results agree reasonably well at high energies, but deviate significantly in the low-to-intermediate energy range. In particular, the pixel counting method which takes the geometrical overlap of atomic cross sections into account is the only calculation that is able to describe the measurements for capture in proton-methane collisions down to 10 keV impact energy. For the nucleobases it also yields a significantly smaller cross section in this region than the other models. New measurements are urgently required to test this prediction.
The neutron-proton bremsstrahlung process $(np to npgamma)$ is known to be sensitive to meson exchange currents in the nucleon-nucleon interaction. The triply differential cross section for this reaction has been measured for the first time at the Lo s Alamos Neutron Science Center, using an intense, pulsed beam of up to 700 MeV neutrons to bombard a liquid hydrogen target. Scattered neutrons were observed at six angles between 12$^circ$ and 32$^circ$, and the recoil protons were observed in coincidence at 12$^circ$, 20$^circ$, and 28$^circ$ on the opposite side of the beam. Measurement of the neutron and proton energies at known angles allows full kinematic reconstruction of each event. The data are compared with predictions of two theoretical calculations, based on relativistic soft-photon and non-relativistic potential models.
We investigate the modeling of positronium (Ps) states and their pick-off annihilation trapped at open volumes pockets in condensed molecular matter. Our starting point is the interacting many-body system of Ps and a He atom because it is the smalles t entity that can mimic the energy gap between the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals of molecules and yet the the many-body structure of the HePs system can be calculated accurately enough. The exact-diagonalization solution of the HePs system enables us to construct a pair-wise full-correlation single-particle potential for the Ps-He interaction and the total potential in solids is obtained as a superposition of the pair-wise potentials. We study in detail Ps states and their pick-off annihilation rates in voids inside solid He and analyse experimental results for Ps-induced voids in liquid He obtaining the radii of the voids. More importantly, we generalize our conclusions by testing the validity of the Tao-Eldrup model, widely used to analyse ortho-Ps annihilation measurements for voids in molecular matter, against our theoretical results for the solid He. Moreover, we discuss the influence of the partial charges of polar molecules and the strength of the van der Waals interaction on the pick-off annihilation rate.
The infrared spectrum of the cross-shaped van der Waals complex N2O-CS2 is observed in the region of the N2O nu1 fundamental band (~2220 cm-1) using a tuneable diode laser to probe a pulsed supersonic slit jet expansion. Both 14N- and 15N-substituted species are studied. Analysis of their spectra establishes that this dimer has a cross-shaped structure, similar to its isoelectronic cousin CO2-CS2. This is the first spectroscopic observation of N2O-CS2, and the molecular parameters determined here should be useful for detection of its pure rotational microwave spectrum.
