We compare m_T2 with m_CT; both are kinematic variables designed to find relationships between masses of pair-produced new states with symmetric decay chains. We find that for massless visible particles m_CT equals m_T2 in a particular limit. We identify advantages and disadvantages to the use of each variable. Toveys paper on m_CT also introduced a powerful concept of extracting mass information from an analysis at intermediate stages of a symmetric decay chain. We suggest that m_T2 is a better tool for performing this analysis than m_CT due to m_T2s better properties under initial state radiation.

Multi-messenger astronomy received a great boost following the discovery of kilonova AT2017gfo, the optical counterpart of the gravitational wave source GW170817 associated with the short gamma-ray burst GRB 170817A. AT2017gfo was the first kilonova that could be extensively monitored in time both photometrically and spectroscopically. Previously, only few candidates have been observed against the glare of short GRB afterglows. In this work, we aim to search the fingerprints of AT2017gfo-like kilonova emissions in the optical/NIR light curves of 39 short GRBs with known redshift. For the first time, our results allow us to study separately the range of luminosity of the blue and red components of AT2017gfo-like kilonovae in short GRBs. In particular, the red component is similar in luminosity to AT2017gfo, while the blue kilonova can be more than 10 times brighter. Finally, we find further evidence to support all the claimed kilonova detections and we exclude an AT2017gfo-like kilonova in GRBs 050509B and 061201.

This paper addresses the question: Why do neural dialog systems generate short and meaningless replies? We conjecture that, in a dialog system, an utterance may have multiple equally plausible replies, causing the deficiency of neural networks in the dialog application. We propose a systematic way to mimic the dialog scenario in a machine translation system, and manage to reproduce the phenomenon of generating short and less meaningful sentences in the translation setting, showing evidence of our conjecture.

We compare the spectral properties of 227 Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) detected by the Fermi Gamma Ray Burst Monitor (GBM) up to February 2010 with those of bursts detected by the CGRO/BATSE instrument. Out of 227 Fermi GRBs, 166 have a measured peak ener gy E_peak_obs of their uF( u) spectrum: of these 146 and 20 belong the long and short class, respectively. Fermi long bursts follow the correlations defined by BATSE bursts between their E_peak_obs vs fluence and peak flux: as already shown for the latter ones, these correlations and their slopes do not originate from instrumental selection effects. Fermi/GBM bursts extend such correlations toward lower fluence/peak energy values with respect to BATSE ones whereas no GBM long burst with E_peak_obs exceeding a few MeV is found, despite the possibility of detecting them. Again as for BATSE, $sim$ 5% of long and almost all short GRBs detected by Fermi/GBM are outliers of the E_peak-isotropic equivalent energy (Amati) correlation while no outlier (neither long nor short) of the E_peak-isotropic equivalent luminosity (Yonetoku) correlation is found. Fermi long bursts have similar typical values of E_peak_obs but a harder low energy spectral index with respect to all BATSE events, exacerbating the inconsistency with the limiting slopes of the simplest synchrotron emission models. Although the short GRBs detected by Fermi are still only a few, we confirm that their E_peak_obs is greater and the low energy spectrum is harder than those of long ones. We discuss the robustness of these results with respect to observational biases induced by the differences between the GBM and BATSE instruments.
We compare the properties of kG magnetic structures in the solar network and in active region plage at high spatial resolution. Our analysis used six SP scans of the solar disc centre aboard Hinode SOT and inverted the obtained spectra of the photosp heric 6302 AA line pair using the 2D SPINOR code. Photospheric magnetic field concentrations in network and plage areas are on average 1.5 kG strong with inclinations of 10-20 degrees, and have <400 m/s internal and 2-3 km/s external downflows. At the disc centre, the continuum intensity of magnetic field concentrations in the network are on average 10% brighter than the mean quiet Sun, whilst their plage counterparts are 3% darker. A more detailed analysis revealed that all sizes of individual kG patches in the network have 150 G higher field strengths on average, 5% higher continuum contrasts, and 800 m/s faster surrounding downflows than similarly sized patches in the plage. The speed of the surrounding downflows also correlates with the patch area, and patches containing pores can produce supersonic flows exceeding 11 km/s in individual pixels. Furthermore, the magnetic canopies of kG patches are on average 9 degrees more horizontal in the plage compared to the network. Most of the differences between the network and plage are due to their different patch size distributions, but the intrinsic differences between similarly sized patches is likely results from the modification of the convection photospheric convection with increasing amounts of magnetic flux.
A survey of the data on measured particle fluxes and the rate of ionization in the atmosphere is presented. Measurements as a function of altitude, time and cut-off rigidity are compared with simulations of particle production from cosmic rays. The s imulations generally give a reasonable representation of the data. However, some discrepancies are found. The solar modulation of the particle fluxes is measured and found to be a factor 2.7$pm$0.8 greater than that observed for muons alone near sea level.
