Within the idealized scheme of a 1-dimensional Frenkel-Kontorova-like model, a special quantized sliding state was found for a solid lubricant confined between two periodic layers [PRL 97, 056101 (2006)]. This state, characterized by a nontrivial geometrically fixed ratio of the mean lubricant drift velocity <v_cm> and the externally imposed translational velocity v_ext, was understood as due to the kinks (or solitons), formed by the lubricant due to incommensuracy with one of the substrates, pinning to the other sliding substrate. A quantized sliding state of the same nature is demonstrated here for a substantially less idealized 2-dimensional model, where atoms are allowed to move perpendicularly to the sliding direction and interact via Lennard-Jones potentials. Clear evidence for quantized sliding at finite temperature is provided, even with a confined solid lubricant composed of multiple (up to 6) lubricant layers. Characteristic backward lubricant motion produced by the presence of anti-kinks is also shown in this more realistic context.

Crescentic shape dunes, known as barchan dunes, are formed by the action of a fluid flow on a granular bed. These bedforms are common in many environments, existing under water or in air, and being formed from grains organized in different initial ar rangements. Although they are frequently found in nature and industry, details about their development are still to be understood. In a recent paper [C. A. Alvarez and E. M. Franklin, Phys. Rev. E 96, 062906 (2017)], we proposed a timescale for the development and equilibrium of single barchans based on the growth of their horns. In the present Letter, we report measurements of the growth of horns at the grain scale. In our experiments, conical heaps were placed in a closed conduit and individual grains were tracked as each heap, under the action of a water flow, evolved to a barchan dune. We identified the trajectories of the grains that migrated to the growing horns, and found that most of them came from upstream regions on the periphery of the initial heap, with an average displacement of the order of the heap size. In addition, we show that individual grains had transverse displacements by rolling and sliding that are not negligible, with many of them going around the heap. The mechanism of horns formation revealed by our experiments contrasts with the general picture that barchan horns form from the advance of the lateral dune flanks due to the scaling of migration velocity with the inverse of dune size. Our results change the way in which the growth of subaqueous barchan dunes is explained.

The effects of the tilt of the crystallographic orientation with respect to an incident electron probe on high-angle annular dark field (HAADF) imaging in aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) have been investigated wi th experiments and simulations. A small specimen tilt can lead to unequal deviations of different atom species in the HAADF image and result in further relative displacement between anions and cations. Simulated HAADF images also confirm that the crystal tilt causes an artifact in atom polarization as well. The effect is derived from the scattering ability of different atoms.

A single Co atom adsorbed on Cu(111) or on ferromagnetic Co islands is contacted with non-magnetic W or ferromagnetic Ni tips in a scanning tunneling microscope. When the Co atom bridges two non-magnetic electrodes conductances of 2e^2/h are found. W ith two ferromagnetic electrodes a conductance of e^2/h is observed which may indicate fully spin-polarized transport.
Accurately measuring mechanical displacements is essential for a vast portion of current technologies. Several optical techniques accomplish this task, allowing for non-contact sensing even below the diffraction limit. Here we introduce an optical en coding technique, dubbed linear photonic gears, that enables ultra-sensitive measurements of transverse displacements by mapping these into polarization rotations of a laser beam. In ordinary ambient conditions, we measure the relative shift between two objects with a resolution of 400 pm. We argue that a resolution of 50 pm should be achievable with existing state-of-the-art technologies. Our single-optical-path scheme is intrinsically stable and it could be implemented as a compact sensor, using integrated optics. We anticipate it may have a strong impact on both research and industry.
We investigate a recently developed scheme for quantized charge pumping based on single-parameter modulation. The device was realized in an AlGaAl-GaAs gated nanowire. It has been shown theoretically that non-adiabaticity is fundamentally required to realize single-parameter pumping, while in previous multi-parameter pumping schemes it caused unwanted and less controllable currents. In this paper we demonstrate experimentally the constructive and destructive role of non-adiabaticity by analysing the pumping current over a broad frequency range.
