We report the first measurement of the optical phonon dispersion in optimally doped single layer Bi2Sr1.6La0.4Cu2O6+delta using inelastic x-ray scattering. We found a strong softening of the Cu-O bond stretching phonon at about q=(0.25,0,0) from 76 to 60 meV, similar to the one reported in other cuprates. A direct comparison with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements taken on the same sample, revealed an excellent agreement in terms of energy and momentum between the ARPES nodal kink and the soft part of the bond stretching phonon. Indeed, we find that the momentum space where a 63 meV kink is observed can be connected with a vector q=(xi,0,0) with xi~0.22, which corresponds exactly to the soft part of the bond stretching phonon mode. This result supports an interpretation of the ARPES kink in terms of electron-phonon coupling.

Phonons in nearly optimally doped HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+delta}$ were studied by inelastic X-ray scattering. The dispersion of the low energy modes is well described by a shell model, while the Cu-O bond stretching mode at high energy shows strong softening towards the zone boundary, which deviates strongly from the model. This seems to be common in the hole-doped high-$T_mathrm{c}$ superconducting cuprates, and, based on this work, not related to a lattice distortion specific to each material.
Low energy electronic structure of optimally doped YBa2Cu3O7-d is investigated using laser-excited angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The surface state and the CuO chain band that usually overlap the CuO2 plane derived bands are not detected, thus enabling a clear observation of the bulk superconducting state. The observed bilayer splitting of the Fermi surface is ~0.08 angstrom^{-1} along the (0,0)-(pi,pi) direction, significantly larger than Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d. The kink structure of the band dispersion reflecting the renormalization effect at ~60 meV shows up similarly as in other hole-doped cuprates. The momentum-dependence of the superconducting gap shows d_{x^2-y^2}-wave like amplitude, but exhibits a nonzero minimum of ~12 meV along the (0,0)-(pi,pi) direction. Possible origins of such an unexpected nodeless gap behavior are discussed.
Superconducting excitations -- Bogoliubov quasiparticles -- are the quantum mechanical mixture of negatively charged electron (-e) and positively charged hole (+e). We propose a new observable for Angular Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) s tudies that is the manifestation of the particle-hole entanglement of the superconducting quasiparticles. We call this observable a {em Bogoliubov angle}. This angle measures the relative weight of particle and hole amplitude in the superconducting (Bogoliubov) quasiparticle. We show how this quantity can be measured by comparing the ratio of spectral intensities at positive and negative energies.

Quasiparticle dynamics of FeSe single crystals revealed by dual-color transient reflectivity measurements ({Delta}R/R) provides unprecedented information on Fe-based superconductors. The amplitude of fast component in {Delta}R/R clearly tells a compe ting scenario between spin fluctuations and superconductivity. Together with the transport measurements, the relaxation time analysis further exhibits anomalous changes at 90 K and 230 K. The former manifests a structure phase transition as well as the associated phonon softening. The latter suggests a previously overlooked phase transition or crossover in FeSe. The electron-phonon coupling constant {lambda} is found to be 0.16, identical to the value of theoretical calculations. Such a small {lambda} demonstrates an unconventional origin of superconductivity in FeSe.

Present-day angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has offered a tremendous advance in the understanding of electron energy spectra in cuprate superconductors and some related compounds. However, in high magnetic field, magnetic quantum os cillations at low temperatures indicate the existence of small electron (hole) Fermi pockets seemingly missing in ARPES of hole (electron) doped cuprates. Here ARPES and quantum oscillations are reconciled in the framework of an impurity band in the charge-transfer Mott-Hubbard insulator.
