We present measurements of the low--temperature excess frequency noise of four niobium superconducting coplanar waveguide microresonators, with center strip widths $s_r$ ranging from 3 $mu$m to 20 $mu$m. For a fixed internal power, we find that the frequency noise decreases rapidly with increasing center strip width, scaling as $1/s_r^{1.6}$. We show that this geometrical scaling is readily explained by a simple semi-empirical model which assumes a surface distribution of independent two-level system fluctuators. These results allow the resonator geometry to be optimized for minimum noise.

In quantum mechanics, the process of measurement is a subtle interplay between extraction of information and disturbance of the state of the quantum system. A quantum non-demolition (QND) measurement minimizes this disturbance by using a particular s ystem - detector interaction which preserves the eigenstates of a suitable operator of the quantum system. This leads to an ideal projective measurement. We present experiments in which we perform two consecutive measurements on a quantum two -level system, a superconducting flux qubit, by probing the hysteretic behaviour of a coupled nonlinear resonator. The large correlation between the results of the two measurements demonstrates the QND nature of the readout method. The fact that a QND measurement is possible for superconducting qubits strengthens the notion that these fabricated mesoscopic systems are to be regarded as fundamental quantum objects. Our results are also relevant for quantum information processing, where projective measurements are used for protocols like state preparation and error correction.
Following the discovery of the Fe-pnictide superconductors, LDA band structure calculations showed that the dominant contributions to the spectral weight near the Fermi energy came from the Fe 3d orbitals. The Fermi surface is characterized by two ho le surfaces around the $Gamma$ point and two electron surfaces around the M point of the 2 Fe/cell Brillouin zone. Here, we describe a 2-band model that reproduces the topology of the LDA Fermi surface and exhibits both ferromagnetic and $q=(pi,0)$ spin density wave (SDW) fluctuations. We argue that this minimal model contains the essential low energy physics of these materials.
We address the textbook problem of dynamics of a spin placed in a dc magnetic field and subjected to an ac drive. If the drive is polarized in the plane perpendicular to the dc field, the drive photons are resonantly absorbed when the spacing between the Zeeman levels is close to the photon energy. This is the only resonance when the drive is circularly polarized. For linearly polarized drive, additional resonances corresponding to absorption of three, five, and multiple odd numbers of photons is possible. Interaction with the environment causes the broadening of the absorption lines. We demonstrate that the interaction with environment enables the forbidden two-photon absorption. We adopt a model of the environment in the form of random telegraph noise produced by a single fluctuator. As a result of the synchronous time fluctuations of different components of the random field, the shape of the two-photon absorption line is non-Lorentzian and depends dramatically on the drive amplitude. This shape is a monotonic curve at strong drive, while, at weak drive, it develops a two-peak structure reminiscent of an induced transparency on resonance.
A major issue for the implementation of large scale superconducting quantum circuits is the interaction with interfacial two-level system defects (TLS) that leads to qubit relaxation and impedes qubit operation in certain frequency ranges that also d rift in time. Another major challenge comes from non-equilibrium quasiparticles (QPs) that result in qubit dephasing and relaxation. In this work we show that such QPs can also serve as a source of TLS. Using spectral and temporal mapping of TLS-induced fluctuations in frequency tunable resonators, we identify a subset of the general TLS population that are highly coherent TLS with a low reconfiguration temperature $sim$ 300 mK, and a non-uniform density of states. These properties can be understood if these TLS are formed by QPs trapped in shallow subgap states formed by spatial fluctutations of the superconducting order parameter $Delta$. Magnetic field measurements of one such TLS reveals a link to superconductivity. Our results imply that trapped QPs can induce qubit relaxation.

A monopole harmonic superconductor is a novel topological phase of matter with topologically protected gap nodes that result from the non-trivial Berry phase structure of Cooper pairs. In this work we propose to realize a monopole superconductor by t he proximity effect between a time-reversal broken Weyl semi-metal and an $s$-wave superconductor. Furthermore, we study the zero-energy vortex bound states in this system by projection methods and by exact solutions. The zero modes exhibit a non-trivial phase winding in real space as a result of the non-trivial winding of the order parameter in momentum space. By mapping the Hamiltonian to the $(1+1)$d Dirac Hamiltonian, it is shown that the zero modes, analogous to the Jackiw-Rebbi mode, are protected by the index theorem. Finally, we propose possible experimental realizations.
