The commensurate phase of multiferroic HoMn2O5 was studied by X-ray magnetic scattering, both off resonance and in resonant conditions at the Ho-L3 edge. Below 40 K, magnetic ordering at the Ho sites is induced by the main Mn magnetic order parameter, and its temperature dependence is well accounted for by a simple Curie-Weiss susceptibility model. A lattice distortion of periodicity twice that of the magnetic order is also evidenced. Azimuthal scans confirm the model of the magnetic structure recently refined from neutron diffraction data for both Mn and Ho sites, indicating that the two sublattices interact via magnetic superexchange.

Element-specific x-ray resonant magnetic scattering investigations were performed to determine the magnetic structure of Eu in EuRh2As2. In the temperature range from 46 K down to 6 K, an incommensurate antiferromagnetic (ICM)structure with a tempera ture dependent propagation vector (0 0 0.9) coexists with a commensurate antiferromagnetic (CM) structure. Angular-dependent measurements of the magnetic intensity indicate that the magnetic moments lie in the tetragonal basal plane and are ferromagnetically aligned within the a-b plane for both magnetic structures. The ICM structure is a spiral-like magnetic structure with a turn angle of 162 deg between adjacent Eu planes. In the CM structure, this angle is 180 deg. These results are consistent with band-structure calculations which indicate a strong sensitivity of the magnetic configuration on the Eu valence.
Rare earth (R) half-Heusler compounds, RBiPt, exhibit a wide spectrum of novel ground states. Recently, GdBiPt has been proposed as a potential antiferromagnetic topological insulator (AFTI). We have employed x-ray resonant magnetic scattering to elu cidate the microscopic details of the magnetic structure in GdBiPt below T_N = 8.5 K. Experiments at the Gd L_2 absorption edge show that the Gd moments order in an antiferromagnetic stacking along the cubic diagonal [1 1 1] direction satisfying the requirement for an AFTI, where both time-reversal symmetry and lattice translational symmetry are broken, but their product is conserved.

Resonant x-ray scattering is performed near the Mn K-absorption edge for an epitaxial thin film of BiMnO3. The azimuthal angle dependence of the resonant (003) peak (in monoclinic indices) is measured with different photon polarizations; for the $sig matopi$ channel a 3-fold symmetric oscillation is observed in the intensity variation, while the $sigmatosigma$ scattering intensity remains constant. These features are accounted for in terms of the peculiar ordering of the manganese 3d orbitals in BiMnO3. It is demonstrated that the resonant peak persists up to 770 K with an anomaly around 440 K; these high and low temperatures coincide with the structural transition temperatures, seen in bulk, with and without a symmetry change, respectively. A possible relationship of the orbital order with the ferroelectricity of the system is discussed.
We present data on the magnetic and magneto-elastic coupling in the hexagonal multiferroic manganite LuMnO3 from inelastic neutron scattering, magnetization and thermal expansion measurements. We measured the magnon dispersion along the main symmetry directions and used this data to determine the principal exchange parameters from a spin-wave model. An analysis of the magnetic anisotropy in terms of the crystal field acting on the Mn is presented. We compare the results for LuMnO3 with data on other hexagonal RMnO3 compounds.
The quadruple perovskite CaMn$_7$O$_{12}$ is a topical multiferroic, in which the hierarchy of electronic correlations driving structural distortions, modulated magnetism, and orbital order is not well known and may vary with temperature. x-ray reson ant elastic scattering (XRES) provides a momentum-resolved tool to study these phenomena, even in very small single crystals, with valuable information encoded in its polarization- and energy-dependence. We present an application of this technique to CaMn$_7$O$_{12}$. By polarization analysis, it is possible to distinguish superstructure reflections associated with magnetic order and orbital order. Given the high momentum resolution, we resolve a previously unknown splitting of an orbital order superstructure peak, associated with a distinct textit{locked-in} phase at low temperatures. A second set of orbital order superstructure peaks can then be interpreted as a second-harmonic orbital signal. Surprisingly, the intensities of the first- and second-harmonic orbital signal show disparate temperature and polarization dependence. This orbital re-ordering may be driven by an exchange mechanism, that becomes dominant over the Jahn-Teller instability at low temperature.
