A systematic first-principles study within density functional theory on the geometrical structures and electronic properties of unconventional fullerene C64 and its derivatives C64X4 (X = H; F;Cl;Br) has been performed. By searching through all 3465 isomers of C64, the ground state of C64 is found to be spherical shape with D2 symmetry, which differs from the parent cage of the recently synthesized C64H4 that is pear-shaped with C3v symmetry. We found that the addition of the halogen atoms like F;Cl;Br to the pentagon-pentagon fusion vertex of C64 cage could enhance the stability, forming the unconventional fullerenes C64X4. The Mulliken charge populations, LUMO-HOMO gap energies and density of states are calculated, showing that different halogen atoms added to C64 will cause remarkably different charge populations of the C64X4 molecule; the chemical deriving could enlarge the energy gaps and affect the electronic structures distinctly. It is unveiled that C64F4 is even more stable than C64H4, as the C-X bond energy of the former is higher than that of the latter. The computed spectra of C64H4 molecules agree well with the experimental data; the IR, Raman, NMR spectra of C64X4 (X = F;Cl;Br) are also calculated to stimulate further experimental investigations. Finally, it is uncovered by total energy calculations that C64X4 could form a stable hexagonal monolayer.

(BEDT-TFF)$_2$I$_3$ charge transfer salts are reported to show superconductivity and pressure induced quasi two-dimensional Dirac cones at the Fermi level. By performing state of the art ab initio calculations in the framework of density functional t heory, we investigate the structural and electronic properties of the three structural phases $alpha$, $beta$ and $kappa$. edit{We furthermore report about the irreducible representations of the corresponding electronic band structures, symmetry of their crystal structure, and discuss the origin of band crossings. Additionally, we discuss the chemically induced strain in $kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ achieved by replacing the Iodine layer with other Halogens: Fluorine, Bromine and Chlorine. In the case of $kappa$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$F$_3$, we identify topologically protected crossings within the band structure. These crossings are forced to occur due to the non-symmorphic nature of the crystal.} The calculated electronic structures presented here are added to the organic materials database (OMDB).
Large bulk band gap is critical for application of the quantum spin Hall (QSH) insulator or two dimensional (2D) topological insulator (TI) in spintronic device operating at room temperature (RT). Based on the first-principles calculations, here we p redict a group of 2D topological insulators BiX/SbX (X = H, F, Cl, and Br) monolayers with extraordinarily large bulk gaps from 0.32 to a record value of 1.08 eV. These giant-gaps are entirely due to the result of strong spin-orbit interaction related to px and py orbitals of Bi/Sb atoms around the two valley K and K of honeycomb lattice, which is different significantly from the one consisted of pz orbital just like in graphene/silicene. The topological characteristic of BiX/SbX monolayers is confirmed by the calculated nontrivial Z2 index and an explicit construction of the low energy effective Hamiltonian in these systems. We show that the honeycomb structures of BiX monolayers remain stable even at a temperature of 600 K. These features make the giant-gap TIs BiX/SbX monolayers an ideal platform to realize many exotic phenomena and fabricate new quantum devices operating at RT. Furthermore, biased BiX/SbX monolayers become a quantum valley Hall insulator, showing valley-selective circular dichroism.
As a possible alternative to organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite halide, inorganic Cs2SnI6 has drawn more and more research attention recently. In order to find more Cs2SnI6 derivatives as the potential solar cell absorber materials, I- ions in Cs2Sn I6 are replaced by other halogen ions and forms the Cs2SnI6-nXn (X=F, Cl, Br; n=1~6) compounds, whose atomic structures, electronic structures and optical absorption are investigated by first principles calculation. When the alloying level n increases, the mean lattice constants, the weighted Sn-X and Cs-X bond lengths all decreases linearly; the bond length of each Sn-X diminishes slightly inside the octahedral structure; Eg of Cs2SnI6-nXn increases nonlinearly. Eleven Cs2SnI6-nXn compounds have an Eg between 1.0 eV and 2.0 eV and so can be potentially used as the light absorption layer of solar cells. Their partial DOS demonstrate that as the alloying level n increases, I 5p orbital in VBM and CBM is gradually substituted by Br 4p, or Cl 3p, or F 2p orbital. The eleven Cs2SnI6-nXn alloys all have a direct bandgap although the lattice distortion induced by the alloyed X- ion.
Theoretical and experimental studies present that metal halogens in MX$_3$ forms can show very interesting electronic and magnetic properties in their bulk and monolayer phases. Many MX$_3$ materials have layered structures in their bulk phases, whil e RuBr$_3$ and RuI$_3$ have one-dimensional chains in plane. In this paper, we show that these metal halogens can also form two-dimensional layered structures in the bulk phase similar to other metal halogens, and cleavage energy values confirm that the monolayers of RuX$_3$ can be possible to be synthesised. We also find that monolayers of RuX$_3$ prefer ferromagnetic spin orientation in the plane for Ru atoms. Their ferromagnetic ground state, however, changes to antiferromagnetic zigzag state after U is included. Calculations using PBE+U with SOC predict indirect band gap of 0.70 eV and 0.32 eV for the optimized structure of RuBr$_3$ and RuI$_3$, respectively. Calculation based on the Monte Carlo simulations reveal interesting magnetic properties of RuBr$_3$, such as large Curie temperature against RuI$_3$, both in bulk and monolayer cases. Moreover, as a result of varying exchange couplings between neighboring magnetic moments, magnetic properties of RuBr$_3$ and RuI$_3$ can undergo drastic changes from bulk to monolayer. We hope our findings can be useful to attempt to fabricate the bulk and monolayer of RuBr$_3$ and RuI$_3$.
A two-dimensional (2D) material with piezoelectricity, topological and ferromagnetic (FM) orders, namely 2D piezoelectric quantum anomalous hall insulator (PQAHI), may open new opportunities to realize novel physics and applications. Here, by first-p rinciples calculations, a family of 2D Janus monolayer $mathrm{Fe_2IX}$ (X=Cl and Br) with dynamic, mechanical and thermal stabilities is predict to be room-temperature PQAHI. At the absence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC), monolayer $mathrm{Fe_2IX}$ (X=Cl and Br) is a half Dirac semimetal state. When the SOC is included, these monolayers become quantum anomalous hall (QAH) states with sizable gaps (more than two hundred meV) and two chiral edge modes (Chern number C=2). It is also found that monolayer $mathrm{Fe_2IX}$ (X=Cl and Br) possesses robust QAH states against biaxial strain. By symmetry analysis, it is found that only out-of-plane piezoelectric response can be induced by a uniaxial strain in the basal plane. The calculated out-of-plane $d_{31}$ of $mathrm{Fe_2ICl}$ ($mathrm{Fe_2IBr}$) is 0.467 pm/V (0.384 pm/V), which is higher than or comparable with ones of other 2D known materials. Meanwhile, using Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, the Curie temperature $T_C$ is estimated to be 429/403 K for monolayer $mathrm{Fe_2ICl}$/$mathrm{Fe_2IBr}$ at FM ground state, which is above room temperature. Finally, the interplay of electronic correlations with nontrivial band topology is studied to confirm the robustness of QAH state. The combination of piezoelectricity, topological and FM orders makes monolayer $mathrm{Fe_2IX}$ (X=Cl and Br) become a potential platform for multi-functional spintronic applications with large gap and high $T_C$. Our works provide possibility to use the piezotronic effect to control QAH effects, and can stimulate further experimental works.
