We present the first X-ray monitoring observations of the X-ray bright FRI radio galaxy NGC6251 observed with RXTE for 1 year. The primary goal of this study is to shed light on the origin of the X-rays, by investigating the spectral variability with model-independent methods coupled with time-resolved and flux-selected spectroscopy. The main results can be summarized as follows: 1) Throughout the monitoring campaign, NGC6251 was in relatively high-flux state. 2) The flux persistently changed with fluctuations of the order of ~2 on time scales of 20-30 days. 3) When the hardness ratio is plotted against the average count rate, there is evidence for a spectral hardening as the source brightens; this finding is confirmed by a flux-selected spectral analysis. 4) The fractional variability appears to be more pronounced in the hard energy band (5-12 keV) than in the soft one (2.5-5 keV). 5) 2-month averaged and flux-limited energy spectra are adequately fitted by a power law. A Fe Kalpha line is never statistically required, although the presence of a strong iron line cannot be ruled out, due to the high upper limits on the line equivalent width. The inconsistency of the spectral variability behavior of NGC6251 with the typical trend observed in Seyfert galaxies and the similarity with blazars lead support to a jet-dominated scenario during the RXTE monitoring campaign. However, a possible contribution from a disk-corona system cannot be ruled out.

We present our observations of the radio emission from supernova (SN) 1993J, in M 81 (NGC 3031), made with the VLA, from 90 to 0.7 cm, as well as numerous measurements from other telescopes. The combined data set constitutes probably the most detaile d set of measurements ever established for any SN outside of the Local Group in any wavelength range. Only SN 1987A in the LMC has been the subject of such an intensive observational program. The radio emission evolves regularly in both time and frequency, and the usual interpretation in terms of shock interaction with a circumstellar medium (CSM) formed by a pre-SN stellar wind describes the observations rather well considering the complexity of the phenomenon. However: 1) The 85 - 110 GHz measurements at early times are not well fitted by the parameterization, unlike the cm wavelength measurements. 2) At mid-cm wavelengths there is some deviation from the fitted radio light curves. 3) At a time ~3100 days after shock breakout, the decline rate of the radio emission steepens without change in the spectral index. This decline is best described as an exponential decay starting at day 3100 with an e-folding time of ~1100 days. 4) The best overall fit to all of the data is a model including both non-thermal synchrotron self-absorption (SSA) and a thermal free-free absorbing (FFA) components at early times, evolving to a constant spectral index, optically thin decline rate, until the break in that decline rate. Moreover, neither a purely SSA nor a purely FFA absorbing models can provide a fit that simultaneously reproduces the light curves, the spectral index evolution, and the brightness temperature evolution. 5) The radio and X-ray light curves exhibit similar behavior and suggest a sudden drop in the SN progenitor mass-loss rate at ~8000 years prior to shock breakout.

We present results from a BeppoSAX (July 2001) observation of the FRI radio galaxy NGC6251, together with a re-analysis of archival ASCA (October 1994) and Chandra (September 2000) data. The weak detection above 10 keV and the lack of iron fluorescen t K-alpha emission lines in the BeppoSAX spectrum rule out that the bulk of the X-ray emission is due to an obscured Seyfert nucleus. The study of the multiwavelength spectral energy distribution suggests instead that X-rays probably originate as inverse-Compton of synchrotron seed photons in a relativistic jet, indicating that NGC6251 hosts a low radio luminosity [L(5 GHz) ~10^40 erg/s] blazar. The BeppoSAX spectrum is flatter than in the earlier ASCA observation. This might be due to the emergence of a different spectral component during phases of lower X-ray flux. In this context, we discuss some possible explanations for the intense and mildly-ionized fluorescent iron line measured by ASCA.

We report on our search for very-long-term variability (weeks to years) in X-ray binaries (XRBs) in the giant elliptical galaxy M87. We have used archival Chandra imaging observations to characterise the long-term variability of 8 of the brightest me mbers of the XRB population in M87. The peak brightness of some of the sources exceeded the ultra luminous X-ray source (ULX) threshold luminosity of ~ 10^{39} erg/s, and one source could exhibit dips or eclipses. We show that for one source, if it has similar modulation amplitude as in SS433, then period recoverability analysis on the current data would detect periodic modulations, but only for a narrow range of periods less than 120 days. We conclude that a dedicated monitoring campaign, with appropriately defined sampling, is essential if we are to investigate properly the nature of the long-term modulations such as those seen in Galactic sources.

Long time scale radio-X-ray correlations in black holes during the hard state have been found in many sources and there seems to emerge a universal underlying relationship which quantitatively describes this behavior. Although it would appear only na tural to detect short term emission patterns in the X-ray and - with a certain time lag - in the radio, there has been little evidence for this up to now. The most prominent source for radio-X-ray correlations on short time scales (minutes) so far remains GRS 1915+105 where a single mass ejection could be detected successively in the X-ray, IR, and radio wavebands. We analyze a database of more than 4 years of simultaneous radio-X-ray data for Cygnus X-1 from the Ryle Telescope and RXTE PCA/HEXTE. We confirm the existence of a radio-X-ray correlation on long time scales, especially at hard energies. We show that apparent correlations on short time scales in the lightcurves of Cygnus X-1 are most likely the coincidental outcome of white noise statistics. Interpreting this result as a breakdown of radio-X-ray correlations on shorter time scales, this sets a limit to the speed of the jet.

We present X-ray observations of the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy PKS 0558-504 obtained with RXTE during a 1-year monitoring campaign. This source, which is one of the very few radio-loud NLS1 galaxies, shows strong X-ray flux variability on time sca les of weeks-months accompanied by spectral variability. The main goal of this study is to investigate the spectral variability with model-independent methods and time-resolved spectroscopy in order to shed light on the origin of the X-rays. The main results can be summarized as follows: 1) The flux typically changes by a factor of 1.5-2 on time scales of 10-30 days, with few extreme events where the flux increases by a factor of ~4 in 3 days. 2) We do not observe any large amplitude, flux related spectral variations. During the flux variations, the spectrum varies mainly in normalization and not in shape. We do observe some small amplitude spectral variations, which do not correlate with flux, although there is a hint of spectral hardening as the source brightens. 3) There is no evidence for reprocessing features such as the Fe Kalpha line or a Compton hump. We argue that PKS 0558-504 is a peculiar object that appears to be different from most of the radio-quiet and radio-loud AGN. If a jet is responsible for the bulk of the X-rays, it must operate in an unusual way. If instead a corona is responsible for the X-rays, the system might be a large-scale analog of the Galactic black holes in the transient intermediate state.
