Stabilization of inter-brane distance is analyzed in 5-dimensional models with higher-order scalar kinetic terms. Equations of motion and boundary conditions for background and for scalar perturbations are presented. Conditions sufficient and (with one exception) necessary for stability are derived and discussed. It is shown that it is possible to construct stable brane configurations even without scalar potentials and cosmological constants. As a byproduct we identify a large class of non-standard boundary conditions for which the Sturm-Liouville operator is hermitian.
We discuss upper and lower bounds on the electrical conductivity of finite temperature strongly coupled quantum field theories, holographically dual to probe brane models, within linear response. In a probe limit where disorder is introduced entirely
In this paper we study dynamical supersymmetry breaking in absence of gravity with the matter content of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. The hidden sector of the theory is a strongly coupled gauge theory, realized in terms of microscopic v
In this work, we study the localization of the vector gauge field in two five-dimensional braneworlds generated by scalar fields coupled to gravity. The sine-Gordon like potentials are employed to produce different thick brane setups. A zero mode loc
We analyze proton decay via dimension six operators in certain GUT-like models derived from Type IIA orientifolds with $D6$-branes. The amplitude is parametrically enhanced by a factor of $alpha_{GUT}^{-1/3}$ relative to the coresponding result in fo
We point out that in some situations it is possible to use matrix model techniques a la Dijkgraaf-Vafa to perturbatively compute D-brane instanton effects. This provides an explanation in terms of stringy instantons of the results in hep-th/0311181.
