The interaction of electron-hole pairs with lattice vibrations exhibits a wealth of intriguing physical phenomena. The Kohn anomaly is a renowned example where electron-phonon coupling leads to non-analytic phonon dispersion at specific momentum nesting the Fermi surface. Here we report evidence of another type of phonon anomaly discovered by low temperature Raman spectroscopy in bilayer graphene where the charge density is modulated by the electric field effect. This anomaly, arising from charge-tunable modulations of particle-hole pairs that are resonantly coupled to lattice vibrations, is predicted to exhibit a logarithmic divergence in the long-wavelength optical-phonon energy. In a non-uniform bilayer of graphene, the logarithmic divergence is abated by charge density inhomogeneity leaving as a vestige an anomalous phonon softening. The observed softening marks the first confirmation of the phonon anomaly as a key signature of the resonant deformation-potential electron-phonon coupling. The high sensitivity of the phonon softening to charge density non-uniformity creates significant venues to explore the interplay between fundamental interactions and disorder in the atomic layers.

A Raman study of a back gated bilayer graphene sample is presented. The changes in the Fermi level induced by charge transfer splits the Raman G-band, hardening its higher component and softening the lower one. These two components are associated wit h the symmetric (S) and anti-symmetric vibration (AS) of the atoms in the two layers, the later one becoming Raman active due to inversion symmetry breaking. The phonon hardening and softening are explained by considering the selective coupling of the S and AS phonons with interband and intraband electron-hole pairs.
Superconductors at the atomic two-dimensional (2D) limit are the focus of an enduring fascination in the condensed matter community. This is because, with reduced dimensions, the effects of disorders, fluctuations, and correlations in superconductors become particularly prominent at the atomic 2D limit; thus such superconductors provide opportunities to tackle tough theoretical and experimental challenges. Here, based on the observation of ultrathin 2D superconductivity in mono- and bilayer molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) with electric-double-layer (EDL) gating, we found that the critical sheet carrier density required to achieve superconductivity in a monolayer MoS$_2$ flake can be as low as 0.55*10$^{14}$cm$^{-2}$, which is much lower than those values in the bilayer and thicker cases in previous report and also our own observations. Further comparison of the phonon dispersion obtained by ab initio calculations indicated that the phonon softening of the acoustic modes around the M point plays a key role in the gate-induced superconductivity within the Bardeen-Cooper Schrieffer (BCS) theory framework. This result might help enrich the understanding of 2D superconductivity with EDL gating.
In the phenomenon of electromagnetically induced transparency1 (EIT) of a three-level atomic system, the linear susceptibility at the dipole-allowed transition is canceled through destructive interference of the direct transition and an indirect tran sition pathway involving a meta-stable level, enabled by optical pumping. EIT not only leads to light transmission at otherwise opaque atomic transition frequencies, but also results in the slowing of light group velocity and enhanced optical nonlinearity. In this letter, we report an analogous behavior, denoted as phonon-induced transparency (PIT), in AB-stacked bilayer graphene nanoribbons. Here, light absorption due to the plasmon excitation is suppressed in a narrow window due to the coupling with the infrared active {Gamma}-point optical phonon, whose function here is similar to that of the meta-stable level in EIT of atomic systems. We further show that PIT in bilayer graphene is actively tunable by electrostatic gating, and estimate a maximum slow light factor of around 500 at the phonon frequency of 1580 cm-1, based on the measured spectra. Our demonstration opens an avenue for the exploration of few-photon non-linear optics and slow light in this novel two-dimensional material, without external optical pumping and at room temperature.
Using electrical transport experiments and shot noise thermometry, we investigate electron-phonon heat transfer rate in a suspended bilayer graphene. Contrary to monolayer graphene with heat flow via three-body supercollision scattering, we find that regular electron - optical phonon scattering in bilayer graphene provides the dominant scattering process at electron energies $ gtrsim 0.15$ eV. We determine the strength of these intrinsic heat flow processes of bilayer graphene and find good agreement with theoretical estimates when both zone edge and zone center optical phonons are taken into account.
We study electron transport in nanostructures patterned in bilayer graphene patches grown epitaxially on SiC as a function of doping, magnetic field, and temperature. Away from charge neutrality transport is only weakly modulated by changes in carrie r concentration induced by a local side-gate. At low n-type doping close to charge neutrality, electron transport resembles that in exfoliated graphene nanoribbons and is well described by tunnelling of single electrons through a network of Coulomb-blockaded islands. Under the influence of an external magnetic field, Coulomb blockade resonances fluctuate around an average energy and the gap shrinks as a function of magnetic field. At charge neutrality, however, conduction is less insensitive to external magnetic fields. In this regime we also observe a stronger suppression of the conductance below $T^*$, which we interpret as a sign of broken interlayer symmetry or strong fluctuations in the edge/potential disorder.
