Recently, it was proposed that phonons are specularly reflected below about 0.5 K in ordinary single-crystal samples of high-T_c cuprates, and that the low-temperature thermal conductivity should be analyzed by fitting the data up to 0.5 K using an arbitrary power law. Such an analysis yields a result different from that obtained from the conventional analysis, in which the fitting is usually restricted to a region below 0.15 K. Here we show that the proposed new analysis is most likely flawed, because the specular phonon reflection means that the phonon mean free path ell gets LONGER than the mean sample width, while the estimated ell is actually much SHORTER than the mean sample width above 0.15 K.

We show that the resistivity in each phase of the High-Tc cuprates is a special case of a general expression derived from the Kubo formula. We obtain, in particular, the T-linear behavior in the strange metal (SM) and upper pseudogap (PG) phases, the pure $T^2$, Fermi liquid (FL) behavior observed in the strongly overdoped regime as well as the $T^{1+delta}$ behavior that interpolates both in the crossover. We calculate the coefficients: a) of $T$ in the linear regime and show that it is proportional to the PG temperature $T^*(x)$; b) of the $T^2$-term in the FL regime, without adjusting any parameter; and c) of the $T^{1.6}$ term in the crossover regime, all in excellent agreement with the experimental data. From our model, we are able to infer that the resistivity in cuprates is caused by the scattering of holes by excitons, which naturally form as holes are doped into the electron background.
Large pulsed magnetic fields up to 60 Tesla are used to suppress the contribution of superconducting fluctuations (SCF) to the ab-plane conductivity above Tc in a series of YBa2Cu3O6+x single crystals. The fluctuation conductivity is found to vanish nearly exponentially with temperature, allowing us to determine precisely the field Hc(T) and the temperature Tc above which the SCFs are fully suppressed. Tc is always found much smaller than the pseudogap temperature. A careful investigation near optimal doping shows that Tc is higher than the pseudogap T*, which indicates that the pseudogap cannot be assigned to preformed pairs. For nearly optimally doped samples, the fluctuation conductivity can be accounted for by gaussian fluctuations following the Ginzburg-Landau scheme. A phase fluctuation contribution might be invoked for the most underdoped samples in a T range which increases when controlled disorder is introduced by electron irradiation. Quantitative analysis of the fluctuating magnetoconductance allows us to determine the critical field Hc2(0) which is found to be quite similar to Hc(0) and to increase with hole doping. Studies of the incidence of disorder on both Tc and T* enable us to propose a three dimensional phase diagram including a disorder axis, which allows to explain most observations done in other cuprate families.
A reasonable cause of absence of hump structure in thermal conductivity of MgB2 below the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) lies in the appearance of multigap structure. The gaps of lower magnitude can be suppressed by defects so that this system becomes effectively a single gap superconductor. When such a situation is created, it is hoped that thermal conductivity will show hump below Tc. Proceeding along these lines, a sample of MgB2 with a relatively higher residual resistivity (33.3 mili-Ohm-cm)has been found to show a hump structure below Tc. The actual electronic thermal conductivity kel of this sample is less than that expected from the Wiedeman- Franz law by more than a factor of 2.6 in the considered temperature range. Modifying the Wiedeman- Franz law for the electronic contribution by replacing the Lorenz number by an effective Lorenz number Leff (L0) we have obtained two sets of kel, namely those with Leff = 0.1L0 and 0.2L0. Corresponding to these two sets of kel, two sets of the phonon thermal conductivity kph are obtained. kph has been analyzed in terms of an extended Bardeen- Rickayzen- Tewordt theory. The main result of this analysis is that the hump structure corresponds to a gap ratio of 3.5, and that large electron-point defect scattering is the main source of drastic reduction of the electronic thermal conductivity from that given by the usual Wiedeman- Franz law.
We have studied the doping dependence of the in-plane and out-of-plane superfluid density, rho^s(0), of two monolayer high-Tc superconductors, HgBa_2CuO_{4+delta} and La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4, using the low frequency ac-susceptibility and the muon spin rela xation techniques. For both superconductors, rho^s(0) increases rapidly with doping in the under- and optimally doped regime and becomes nearly doping independent above a critical doping, p_c = 0.20.
We report on far infrared measurements of interplane conductivity for underdoped single-crystal YBa2Cu3Oy in magnetic field and situate these new data within earlier work on two other high-Tc cuprate superconductors, La(2-x)SrxCuO4 and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8 +d). The three systems have displayed apparently disparate electrodynamic responses in the Josephson vortex state formed when magnetic field H is applied parallel to the CuO2 planes. Specifically, there is discrepancy in the number and field dependence of longitudinal modes observed. We compare and contrast these findings with several models of the electrodynamics in the vortex state and suggest that most differences can be reconciled through considerations of the Josephson vortex lattice ground state as well as the c-axis and in-plane quasiparticle dissipations.
