We investigate an extension of ideas of Atiyah-Patodi-Singer (APS) to a noncommutative geometry setting framed in terms of Kasparov modules. We use a mapping cone construction to relate odd index pairings to even index pairings with APS boundary conditions in the setting of KK-theory, generalising the commutative theory. We find that Cuntz-Kreiger systems provide a natural class of examples for our construction and the index pairings coming from APS boundary conditions yield complete K-theoretic information about certain graph C*-algebras.

We propose a non-perturbative formulation of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer(APS) index in lattice gauge theory, in which the index is given by the $eta$ invariant of the domain-wall Dirac operator. Our definition of the index is always an integer with a fi nite lattice spacing. To verify this proposal, using the eigenmode set of the free domain-wall fermion, we perturbatively show in the continuum limit that the curvature term in the APS theorem appears as the contribution from the massive bulk extended modes, while the boundary $eta$ invariant comes entirely from the massless edge-localized modes.
Atiyah-Singer index theorem on a lattice without boundary is well understood owing to the seminal work by Hasenfratz et al. But its extension to the system with boundary (the so-called Atiyah- Patodi-Singer index theorem), which plays a crucial role in T-anomaly cancellation between bulk- and edge-modes in 3+1 dimensional topological matters, is known only in the continuum theory and no lattice realization has been made so far. In this work, we try to non-perturbatively define an alternative index from the lattice domain-wall fermion in 3+1 dimensions. We will show that this new index in the continuum limit, converges to the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index defined on a manifold with boundary, which coincides with the surface of the domain-wall.
Let $Gamma$ be a finitely generated discrete group satisfying the rapid decay condition. We give a new proof of the higher Atiyah-Patodi-Singer theorem on a Galois $Gamma$-coverings, thus providing an explicit formula for the higher index associated to a group cocycle $cin Z^k (Gamma;mathbb{C})$ which is of polynomial growth with respect to a word-metric. Our new proof employs relative K-theory and relative cyclic cohomology in an essential way.
Relative index theorems, which deal with what happens with the index of elliptic operators when cutting and pasting, are abundant in the literature. It is desirable to obtain similar theorems for other stable homotopy invariants, not the index alone. In the spirit of noncommutative geometry, we prove a full-fledged relative index type theorem that compares certain elements of the Kasparov KK-group KK(A,B).
We introduce a mathematician-friendly formulation of the physicist-friendly derivation of the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer index of our previous paper. Our viewpoint sheds some new light on the interplay among the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer boundary condition, domain-wall fermions, and edge modes.
