We present the results of the analysis of an archival observation of LMC X-2 performed with XMM/Newton. The spectra taken by high-precision instruments have never been analyzed before. We find an X-ray position for the source that is inconsistent with the one obtained by ROSAT, but in agreement with the Einstein position and that of the optical counterpart. The correlated spectral and timing behaviour of the source suggests that the source is probably in the normal branch of its X-ray color-color diagram. The spectrum of the source can be fitted with a blackbody with a temperature 1.5 keV plus a disk blackbody at 0.8 keV. Photoelectric absorption from neutral matter has an equivalent hydrogen column of 4 x 10^{20} cm^{-2}. An emission line, which we identify as the O VIII Lyman alpha line, is detected, while no feature due to iron is detected in the spectrum. We argue that the emission of this source can be straightforwardly interpreted as a sum of the emission from a boundary layer between the NS and the disc and a blackbody component coming from the disc itself. Other canonical models that are used to fit Z-sources do not give a satisfactory fit to the data. The detection of the O VIII emission line (and the lack of detection of lines in the iron region) can be due to the fact that the source lies in the Large Magellanic Cloud.

We present the results of a 500 ksec long XMM-Newton observation and a 120 ksec long quasi-simultaneous Chandra observation of the Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxy 1H0707-495 performed in 2010 September. Consistent with earlier results by Fabian et al. ( 2009) and Zoghbi et al. (2010), the spectrum is found to be dominated by relativistically broadened reflection features from an ionised accretion disc around a maximally rotating black hole. Even though the spectra changed between this observation and earlier XMM-Newton observations, the physical parameters of the black hole and accretion disc (i.e., spin and inclination) are consistent between both observations. We show that this reflection spectrum is slightly modified by absorption in a mildly relativistic, highly ionised outflow which changed velocity from around 0.11c to 0.18c between 2008 January and 2010 September. Alternative models, in which the spectral shape is dominated by absorption, lead to spectral fits of similar quality, however, the parameters inferred for the putative absorber are unphysical.
We present a study of the diffuse X-ray emission from the star forming region LMC-N 57 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We use archival XMM-Newton observations to unveil in detail the distribution of hot bubbles in this complex. X-ray emission is detected from the central superbubble (SB) DEM L 229, the supernova remnant (SNR) 0532$-$675 and the Wolf-Rayet (WR) bubble DEM L 231 around the WR star Br 48. Comparison with infrared images unveils the powerful effect of massive stars in destroying their nurseries. The distribution of the hot gas in the SNR and the SB display their maxima in regions in contact with the filamentary cold material detected by IR images. Our observations do not reveal extended X-ray emission filling DEM L 231, although several point-like sources are detected in the field of view of this WR nebula. The X-ray properties of Br 48 are consistent with a binary WN4$+$O as proposed by other authors. We modeled the X-ray emission from the SB and found that its X-ray emission can be simply explained by pressure-driven wind model, that is, there is no need to invoke the presence of a SN explosion as previously suggested. The pressure calculations of the hot gas confirms that the dynamical evolution of the SB DEM L 229 is dominated by the stellar winds from the star cluster LH 76.
We present the results of the X-ray spectral analysis of the deep survey obtained with the XMM-Newton observatory on the Lockman Hole. The X-ray data and the cumulative source counts were reported by Hasinger et al. (2001). Our sample contains 104 so urces with a count limit of 70 of which 55 have redshift identification. The redshift distribution peaks at z ~ 0.8, with a strong excess of low z AGN and a deficiency of sources at z > 2 compared to population synthesis models for the X-ray background. The type 2 (obscured) AGN have weaker soft X-ray and optical fluxes. They cluster around z ~ 1. There is a clear separation between the classical/type 1 AGN and the obscured/type 2 ones in several diagnostics involving X-ray colour, X-ray flux, optical/near IR colour and optical brightness. Using the z subsample, we show that this separation between the AGN populations is a consequence of different absorption column densities. The two populations have the same average spectral index, Gamma ~ 1.9. At the 70 count detection limit, there is also a strong overlap between the two populations in hard X-ray flux and near IR brightness. These diagnostics should enable the classification of obscured/type 2 AGN very faint optically.

We present here a study of XMM-Newton data of two distant galaxy cluster candidates. One of these was discovered serendipitously in near infrared data, CL J0533-2411, the other one corresponds to the cluster EIS J0533-2412 part of the EIS cluster sur vey. The estimated redshift of CL J0533-2411 is z=1.2-1.7. EIS J0533-2412 is a rich system (Lambda_cl=299), with a spectroscopically confirmed redshift of z=1.3. Both galaxy concentrations show firm X-ray detections, located within 30 of their optical center. However, we cannot resolve the sources with XMM-Newton. If the X-ray emission originates from the X-ray emitting intra-cluster medium (ICM) it would be extremely concentrated which is rather unlikely (core radii below 14 h_{65}^{-1}kpc and 40 h_{65}^{-1}kpc, respectively). We argue that the X-ray sources are more likely AGN members of the galaxy concentrations. We set an upper limit for the bolometric luminosity of a hot ICM in the range ~0.7-2.1 10^{44} h_{65}^{-2}erg/s for CL J0533-2411, depending on the exact redshift. For EIS J0533-2412 the limit is L_bol=(6.2+/-1.4) 10^{43} h_{65}^{-2}erg/s. We interpret our result in the following way: EIS J0533-2412 (and possibly CL J0533-2411) are proto-clusters and show matter overdensities before collapse, which explains the low significance of extended X-ray emission.
Context. X-ray spectral variability analyses of active galactic nuclei (AGN) with moderate luminosities and redshifts typically show a softer when brighter behaviour. Such a trend has rarely been investigated for high-luminosity AGNs ($ L_{bol}gtrsim 10^{44}$ erg/s), nor for a wider redshift range (e.g. $0lesssim zlesssim 5$). Aims. We present an analysis of spectral variability based on a large sample of 2,700 quasars, measured at several different epochs, extracted from the fifth release of the XMM-Newton Serendipitous Source Catalogue. Methods. We quantified the spectral variability through the parameter $beta$ defined as the ratio between the change in the photon index $Gamma$ and the corresponding logarithmic flux variation, $beta=-DeltaGamma/Deltalog F_X$. Results. Our analysis confirms a softer when brighter behaviour for our sample, extending the previously found general trend to high luminosity and redshift. We estimate an ensemble value of the spectral variability parameter $beta=-0.69pm0.03$. We do not find dependence of $beta$ on redshift, X-ray luminosity, black hole mass or Eddington ratio. A subsample of radio-loud sources shows a smaller spectral variability parameter. There is also some change with the X-ray flux, with smaller $beta$ (in absolute value) for brighter sources. We also find significant correlations for a small number of individual sources, indicating more negative values for some sources.
