Relativistic outflows carrying large scale magnetic fields have large inductive potential and may accelerate protons to ultra high energies. We discuss a novel scheme of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray (UHECR) acceleration due to drifts in magnetized, cylindrically collimated, sheared jets of powerful active galaxies (with jet luminosity $geq 10^{46}$ erg s$^{-1}$). A positively charged particle carried by such a plasma is in an unstable equilibrium if ${bf B} cdot abla times {bf v}< 0$, so that kinetic drift along the velocity shear would lead to fast, regular energy gain. The highest rigidity particles are accelerated most efficiently implying the dominance of light nuclei for energies above the ankle in our model: from a mixed population of pre-accelerated particle the drift mechanism picks up and boosts protons preferably.

(Abridged)Relativistic outflows carrying large scale magnetic fields have large inductive potential and may accelerate protons to ultra high energies. We discuss a novel scheme of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Ray (UHECR) acceleration due to drifts in mag netized, cylindrically collimated, sheared jets of powerful active galaxies (with jet luminosity $geq 10^{46}$ erg s$^{-1}$). We point out that a positively charged particle carried by such a plasma is in an unstable equilibrium if ${bf B} cdot abla times {bf v}< 0$, so that kinetic drift along the velocity shear would lead to fast, {it regular} energy gain. We show that if a seed of pre-accelerated particles with energy below the ankle $leq 10^{18}$ eV is present, these particles can be boosted to energies above $ 10^{19}$ eV. A key feature of the mechanism is that the highest rigidity particles are accelerated most efficiently implying the dominance of light nuclei for energies above the ankle in our model: from a mixed population of pre-accelerated particle the drift mechanism picks up and boosts protons preferably. In addition, after a particle traversed large fraction of the available potential, its Larmor radius becomes of the order of the jet thickness. In this case, {it the maximum possible acceleration rate of inverse relativistic gyro-frequency is achieved} and a particle finally become unconfined and leave the jet.
We present six case studies from a broad mass range ($1 - 10^9$ $M_odot$) of astrophysical objects, each of which exhibit signs of jets and emit intense high energy gamma rays ($>10$ GeV). Many of these objects also emit spatially identifiable ultra high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs). In all cases it is found that wakefield acceleration (WFA) explains both the global properties and details. For blazars, we also explain the temporal structure of these signals, which includes neutrinos, and the correlations in their bursts and anti-correlation in flux and index. Blazars ($sim 10^9$ $M_odot$), radio galaxies ($sim 10^8, M_{odot}$), Seyfert galaxies ($sim 10^6 ,M_{odot}$), starburst galaxies ($sim 10^{3}, M_{odot}$), down to microquasars ($1 sim 10$ $M_odot$) interestingly exhibit the same physics since the nature of the accretion and acceleration is independent of the mass, aside from maximum values. It is possible to accelerate electrons to energies much greater than $10$ GeV, and protons beyond $10^{20}$ eV with WFA. We compare observational values with theoretical ones to illustrate they are in good agreement. This mechanism is also accompanied by related emissions, such as high-energy pin-pointed neutrinos, time varying radio, optical, and X-ray emissions, opening an opportunity to characterize these astrophysical objects via multi-messenger approaches.
In this paper, we investigate the acceleration in relativistic jets of high-energy proton preaccelerated in the magnetosphere of a supermassive black hole. The proton reaches maximum energy when passing the total potential difference of $U$ between t he jet axis and its periphery. This voltage is created by a rotating black hole and transmitted along magnetic field lines into the jet. It is shown that the trajectories of proton in the jet are divided into three groups: untrapped, trapped and not accelerated. Untrapped particles are not kept by poloidal and toroidal magnetic fields inside the jet, so they escape out the jet and their energy is equal to the maximum value, $eU$. Trapped protons are moving along the jet with oscillations in the radial direction. Their energy varies around the value of $0.74 eU$. In a strong magnetic field protons preaccelerated in the magnetosphere are pressed to the jet axis and practically are not accelerated in the jet. The work defines acceleration regimes for a range of the most well-known AGN objects with relativistic jets and for the microquasar SS433.

The highest energy cosmic rays could be produced by drifts in magnetized, cylindrically collimated, sheared jets of powerful active galaxies (i.e. FR II radiogalaxies; radio loud quasars and high power BL Lacs). We show that in such scenarios proton synchrotron radiation can give rise to detectable photon fluxes at energies ranging from hundreds of keV to tens of MeV.
In this chapter, we review some features of particle acceleration in astrophysical jets. We begin by describing four observational results relating to the topic, with particular emphasis on jets in active galactic nuclei and parallels between differe nt sources. We then discuss the ways in which particles can be accelerated to high energies in magnetised plasmas, focusing mainly on shock acceleration, second-order Fermi and magnetic reconnection; in the process, we attempt to shed some light on the basic conditions that must be met by any mechanism for the various observational constraints to be satisfied. We describe the limiting factors for the maximum particle energy and briefly discuss multimessenger signals from neutrinos and ultrahigh energy cosmic rays, before describing the journey of jet plasma from jet launch to cocoon with reference to the different acceleration mechanisms. We conclude with some general comments on the future outlook.
