We present the first high-redshift galaxy cluster candidate sample from the HIROCS survey found in the COSMOS field. It results from a combination of public COSMOS with proprietary H-band data on a 0.66 square degree part of the COSMOS field and comprises 12 candidates in the redshift range 1.23 < z < 1.55. We find an increasing fraction of blue cluster members with increasing redshift. Many of the blue and even some of the reddest member galaxies exhibit disturbed morphologies as well as signs of interaction.

We present the science case for mapping several thousand galaxy (proto)clusters at z=1-10 with a large aperture single dish sub-mm facility, producing a high-redshift counterpart to local large surveys of rich clusters like the well-studied Abell cat alogue. Principal goals of a large survey of distant clusters are the evolution of galaxy clusters over cosmic time and the impact of environment on the evolution and formation of galaxies. To make a big leap forward in this emerging research field, the community would benefit from a large-format, wide-band, direct-detection spectrometer (e.g., based on MKID technology), covering a wide field of ~1 square degree and a frequency coverage from 70 to 700 GHz.
The XMM-Newton Distant Cluster Project (XDCP) aims at the identification of a well defined sample of X-ray selected clusters of galaxies at redshifts z>0.8. We present a catalogue of the extended sources in one the deepest ~250 ksec XMM-Newton fields targeting LBQS 2215-175 covering the CFHTLS deep field four. The cluster identification is based, among others, on deep imaging with the ESO VLT and from the CFHT legacy survey. The confirmation of cluster candidates is done by VLT/FORS2 multi-object spectroscopy. Photometric redshifts from the CFHTLS D4 are utilized to confirm the effectiveness of the X-ray cluster selection method. The survey sensitivity is computed with extensive simulations. At a flux limit of S(0.5-2.0 keV) ~ 2.5e-15 erg/s we achieve a completeness level higher than 50% in an area of ~0.13 square degrees. We detect six galaxy clusters above this limit with optical counterparts, of which 5 are new spectroscopic discoveries. Two newly discovered X-ray luminous galaxy clusters are at z>1.0, another two at z=0.41 and one at z=0.34. For the most distant X-ray selected cluster in this field at z=1.45 we find additional (active) member galaxies from both X-ray and spectroscopic data. Additionally, we find evidence of large scale structures at moderate redshifts of z=0.41 and z=0.34. The quest for distant clusters in archival XMM-Newton data has led to the detection of six clusters in a single field, making XMM-Newton an outstanding tool for cluster surveys. Three of these clusters are at z>1, which emphasises the valuable contribution of small, yet deep surveys to cosmology. Beta-models are appropriate descriptions for the cluster surface brightness to perform cluster detection simulations in order to compute the X-ray selection function. The constructed logN-logS tends to favour a scenario where no evolution in the cluster X-ray luminosity function (XLF) takes place.
The galaxy data provided by COSMOS survey for 1 by 1 degree field of sky are analysed by methods of complex networks. Three galaxy samples (slices) with redshifts ranging within intervals 0.88-0.91, 0.91-0.94 and 0.94-0.97 are studied as two-dimensio nal projections for the spatial distributions of galaxies. We construct networks and calculate network measures for each sample, in order to analyse the network similarity of different samples, distinguish various topological environments, and find associations between galaxy properties (colour index and stellar mass) and their topological environments. Results indicate a high level of similarity between geometry and topology for different galaxy samples and no clear evidence of evolutionary trends in network measures. The distribution of local clustering coefficient C manifests three modes which allow for discrimination between stand-alone singlets and dumbbells (0 <= C <= 0.1), intermediately (0 < C < 0.9) and clique (0.9 <= C <= 1) like galaxies. Analysing astrophysical properties of galaxies (colour index and stellar masses), we show that distributions are similar in all slices, however weak evolutionary trends can also be seen across redshift slices. To specify different topological environments we have extracted selections of galaxies from each sample according to different modes of C distribution. We have found statistically significant associations between evolutionary parameters of galaxies and selections of C: the distribution of stellar mass for galaxies with interim C differ from the corresponding distributions for stand-alone and clique galaxies, and this difference holds for all redshift slices. The colour index realises somewhat different behaviour.

With the superb angular resolution of the Chandra Observatory, it is now possible to detect X-ray point sources, either embedded in galaxy clusters or along the cluster line of sight, which could not be resolved by previous instruments. This now allo ws studies of source counts in distant cluster fields. A sample of 18 distant (0.25 < z < 1.01) galaxy clusters from the Chandra archive were used to analyze the inner region of clusters of galaxies to check for the presence of any overdensity of X-ray point sources embedded in the gas diffuse emission. We constructed the logN-logS, in both the soft and hard energy bands, for the X-ray point sources detected in the central cluster region (within 1 Mpc)to be compared with the counts of point sources detected in similarly deep fields without clusters. We find a ~ 2 sigma excess of cluster region sources at the bright end of the logN-logS. The radial distribution of the brightest X-ray point sources confirms this excess and indicates that it is confined to the inner 0.5 Mpc of the cluster region. The results suggest the possible existence of X-ray sources belonging to the cluster (most probably AGN, given their 0.5-10 keV luminosity ranging from 10^43 to 10^44 erg/s): on average one every three clusters. The X-ray source excess found here is much smaller than the excess of radio galaxies found recently in high-z X-ray selected clusters, possibly due to the higher sensitivity of the radio observations.

We show that the most distant X-ray detected cluster known to date, ClJ1001 at z=2.506, hosts a strong overdensity of radio sources. Six of them are individually detected (within 10) in deep 0.75 resolution VLA 3GHz imaging, with S(3GHz)>8uJy. Of the six, AGN likely affects the radio emission in two galaxies while star formation is the dominant source powering the remaining four. We searched for cluster candidates over the full COSMOS 2-square degree field using radio-detected 3GHz sources and looking for peaks in Sigma5 density maps. ClJ1001 is the strongest overdensity by far with >10sigma, with a simple z_phot>1.5 preselection. A cruder photometric rejection of z<1 radio foregrounds leaves ClJ1001 as the second strongest overdensity, while even using all radio sources ClJ1001 remains among the four strongest projected overdensities. We conclude that there are great prospects for future, deep and wide-area radio surveys to discover large samples of the first generation of forming galaxy clusters. In these remarkable structures widespread star formation and AGN activity of massive galaxy cluster members, residing within the inner cluster core, will ultimately lead to radio continuum as one of the most effective means for their identification, with detection rates expected in the ballpark of 0.1-1 per square degree at z>2.5. Samples of hundreds such high-redshift clusters could potentially constrain cosmological parameters and test cluster and galaxy formation models.
