Motivated by a recent measurement of proton-proton elastic scattering observables up to 3.0 GeV, we investigate the description of those data within models of the nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction valid above the pion production threshold. In addition to including the well known Delta resonance we incorporate two low-lying N* resonances, the N*(1440) and the N*(1535), and study their influence on pp and np observables for projectile laboratory kinetic energies up to 1.5 GeV.

The N*(1440) -> N pi pi decay is studied by making use of the chiral reduction formula. This formula suggests a scalar-isoscalar pion-baryon contact interaction which is absent in the recent study of Hern{a}ndez et al. The contact interaction is intr oduced into their model, and is found to be necessary for the simultaneous description of g_{RN pi pi} and the pi-pi and pi-N invariant mass distributions.
The binding energies of even-even and odd-odd N=Z nuclei are compared. After correcting for the symmetry energy we find that the lowest T=1 state in odd-odd N=Z nuclei is as bound as the ground state in the neighboring even-even nucleus, thus providi ng evidence for isovector np pairing. However, T=0 states in odd-odd N=Z nuclei are several MeV less bound than the even-even ground states. We associate this difference with a pair gap and conclude that there is no evidence for an isoscalar pairing condensate in N=Z nuclei.
We consider the evolution of the neutron-nucleus scattering length for the lightest nuclei. We show that, when increasing the number of neutrons in the target nucleus, the strong Pauli repulsion is weakened and the balance with the attractive nucleon -nucleon interaction results into a resonant virtual state in $^{18}$B. We describe $^{19}$B in terms of a $^{17}$B-$n$-$n$ three-body system where the two-body subsystems $^{17}$B-$n$ and $n$-$n$ are unbound (virtual) states close to the unitary limit. The energy of $^{19}$B ground state is well reproduced and two low-lying resonances are predicted. Their eventual link with the Efimov physics is discussed. This model can be extended to describe the recently discovered resonant states in $^{20,21}$B.
p-3H and n-3He scattering in the energy range above the n-3He but below the d-d thresholds is studied by solving the 4-nucleon problem with a realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction. Three different methods -- Alt, Grassberger and Sandhas, Hyperspheric al Harmonics, and Faddeev-Yakubovsky -- have been employed and their results for both elastic and charge-exchange processes are compared. We observe a good agreement between the three different methods, thus the obtained results may serve as a benchmark. A comparison with the available experimental data is also reported and discussed.
We calculate formation spectra of eta-nucleus systems in (pi,N) reactions with nuclear targets, which can be performed at existing and/or forthcoming facilities, including J-PARC, in order to investigate eta-nucleus interactions. Based on the N^*(153 5) dominance in the eta N system, eta-mesic nuclei are suitable systems for study of in-medium properties of the N^*(1535) baryon resonance, such as reduction of the mass difference of N and N^* in nuclear medium, which affects level structure of the eta and N^*-hole modes. We find that clear information on the in-medium N^*- and eta-nucleus interactions can be obtained through the formation spectra of the eta-mesic nuclei. We also discuss the experimental feasibilities by showing several spectra of (pi,N) reactions calculated with possible experimental settings. Coincident measurements of pi N pairs from the N^* decays in nuclei help us to reduce backgrounds.
