We derive projected rotational velocities (vsini) for a sample of 156 Galactic OB star members of 35 clusters, HII regions, and associations. The HeI lines at $lambdalambda$4026, 4388, and 4471A were analyzed in order to define a calibration of the synthetic HeI full-widths at half maximum versus stellar vsini. A grid of synthetic spectra of HeI line profiles was calculated in non-LTE using an extensive helium model atom and updated atomic data. The vsinis for all stars were derived using the He I FWHM calibrations but also, for those target stars with relatively sharp lines, vsini values were obtained from best fit synthetic spectra of up to 40 lines of CII, NII, OII, AlIII, MgII, SiIII, and SIII. This calibration is a useful and efficient tool for estimating the projected rotational velocities of O9-B5 main-sequence stars. The distribution of vsini for an unbiased sample of early B stars in the unbound association Cep OB2 is consistent with the distribution reported elsewhere for other unbound associations.

Elemental abundances of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, magnesium, aluminum, and silicon are presented for a sample of twelve rapidly rotating OB star (v sin i > 60 km s^-1) members of the Cep OB2, Cyg OB3 and Cyg OB7 associations. The abundances are deriv ed from spectrum synthesis, using both LTE and non-LTE calculations. As found in almost all previous studies of OB stars, the average abundances are slightly below solar, by about 0.1 to 0.3 dex. In the case of oxygen, even with the recently derived low solar abundances the OB stars are closer to, but still below, the solar value. Results for the 9 Cep OB2 members in this sample can be combined with results published previously for 8 Cep OB2 stars with low projected rotational velocities to yield the most complete set of abundances, to date, for this particular association. These abundances provide a clear picture of both the general chemical and individual stellar evolution that has occurred within this association. By placing the Cep OB2 stars studied in an HR diagram we identify the presence of two distinct age subgroups, with both subgroups having quite uniform chemical abundances. Two stars are found in the older subgroup that show significant N/O overabundances, with both stars being two of the most massive, the most evolved, and most rapidly rotating of the members studied in Cep OB2. These characteristics of increased N abundances being tied to high mass, rapid rotation, and an evolved phase are those predicted from models of rotating stars which undergo rotationally driven mixing.
The distribution of stellar abundances along the Galactic disk is an important constraint for models of chemical evolution and Galaxy formation. In this study we derive radial gradients of C, N, O, Mg, Al, Si, as well as S, from abundance determinati ons in young OB stars. Our database is composed of a sample of 69 members of 25 open clusters, OB associations and H II regions with Galactocentric distances between 4.7 and 13.2 kpc. An important feature of this abundance database is the fact that the abundances were derived self-consistently in non-LTE using a homogeneous set of stellar parameters. Such an uniform analysis is expected to reduce the magnitude of random errors, as well as the influence of systematics in the gradients defined by the abundance and Galactocentric distance. The metallicity gradients obtained in this study are, in general, flatter than the results from previous recent abundance studies of early-type stars. The slopes are found to be between -0.031 (for oxygen) and $-0.052 dex kpc^{-1}$ (for magnesium). The gradients obtained for the studied elements are quite similar and if averaged, they can be represented by a single slope of $-0.042 pm 0.007 dex kpc^{-1}$. This value is generally consistent with an overall flattening of the radial gradients with time.
New estimates of the distances of 36 nearby galaxies are presented based on accurate distances of galactic Cepheids obtained by Gieren, Fouque and Gomez (1998) from the geometrical Barnes-Evans method. The concept of sosie is applied to extend the distance determination to extragalactic Cepheids without assuming the linearity of the PL relation. Doing so, the distance moduli are obtained in a straightforward way. The correction for extinction is made using two photometric bands (V and I) according to the principles introduced by Freedman and Madore (1990). Finally, the statistical bias due to the incompleteness of the sample is corrected according to the precepts introduced by Teerikorpi (1987) without introducing any free parameters (except the distance modulus itself in an iterative scheme). The final distance moduli depend on the adopted extinction ratio {R_V}/{R_I} and on the limiting apparent magnitude of the sample. A comparison with the distance moduli recently published by the Hubble Space Telescope Key Project (HSTKP) team reveals a fair agreement when the same ratio {R_V}/{R_I} is used but shows a small discrepancy at large distance. In order to bypass the uncertainty due to the metallicity effect it is suggested to consider only galaxies having nearly the same metallicity as the calibrating Cepheids (i.e. Solar metallicity). The internal uncertainty of the distances is about 0.1 magnitude but the total uncertainty may reach 0.3 magnitude.
We present a sample of 58 Be stars containing objects of spectral types O9 to B8.5 and luminosity classes III to V. We have obtained 3670 - 5070 Angstrom spectra of the sample which are used to derive spectral types and rotational velocities. We disc uss the distribution of spectral types and rotational velocities obtained and conclude that there are no significant selection effects in our sample.

With an aim of getting information on the equatorial rotation velocity (v_e) of Sirius A separated from the inclination effect (sin i), a detailed profile analysis based on the Fourier transform technique was carried out for a large number of spectra l lines, while explicitly taking into account the line-by-line differences in the centre-limb behaviours and the gravity darkening effect (which depend on the physical properties of each line) based on model calculations. The simulations showed that how the 1st-zero frequencies (q_1) of Fourier transform amplitudes depends on v_e is essentially determined by the temperature-sensitivity parameter (K) differing from line to line, and that Fe I lines (especially those of very weak ones) are more sensitive to v_e than Fe II lines. The following conclusions were drawn by comparing the theoretical and observed q_1 values for many Fe I and Fe II lines: (1) The projected rotational velocity (vsini) for Sirius A is fairly well established at 16.3 (+/-0.1) km/s by requiring that both Fe I and Fe II lines yield consistent results. (2) Although precise separation of v_e and i is difficult, v_e is concluded to be in the range of 16 < v_e < 30-40 km/s, which corresponds to 25 < i(deg) < 90. Accordingly, Sirius A is an intrinsically slow rotator for an A-type star, being consistent with its surface chemical peculiarity.
