In the analysis of the heavy electron systems, theoretical models with c-f hybridization gap are often used. We point out that such a gap does not exist and the simple picture with the hybridization gap is misleading in the metallic systems, and present a correct picture by explicitly constructing an effective band model of YbAl_3. Hamiltonian consists of a nearly free electron model for conduction bands which hybridize with localized f-electrons, and includes only a few parameters. Density of states, Sommerfeld coefficient, f-electron number and optical conductivity are calculated and compared with the band calculations and the experiments.

Based on the recently proposed band model, the electronic specific heat of moderately heavy electron compound YbAl$_3$ are investigated. The band term of the Hamiltonian consists of three parts; conduction electrons described by the nearly free elect ron method, localized 4f electrons of Yb ions and the hybridization term between these electrons. Extracting several bands near the Fermi level, we reconstruct the low-energy effective Hamiltonian in order to consider the correlation effect, which is studied by using the self-consistent second order perturbation theory combined with local approximation. The temperature dependence of the specific heat $c_{rm v}(T)$ is calculated as a function of temperature $T$ from the numerical derivative of the internal energy. Sommerfeld coefficient $gamma$ is also calculated from the direct formula. The overall structure of $c_{rm v}(T)/T$ is in quantitative agreement with the experimental results, which have the characteristic two-peak structures. They originate from the correlation effect and the structure of the non-interacting density of states, respectively. We show that our effective Hamiltonian yielding the realistic band structure may describe quantitatively heavy electron compounds with conduction bands composed of s- or p- electrons.
The intermediate valence compound YbAl3 exhibits a broad magnetic excitation with characteristic energy E1 ~ 50meV, of order of the Kondo energy (TK ~ 600-700K). In the low temperature (T < Tcoh ~ 40K) Fermi liquid state, however, a new magnetic exci tation arises at E2 ~ 33meV, which lies in the hybridization gap that exists in this compound. We show, using inelastic neutron scattering on a single-crystal sample, that while the scattering at energies near E1 has the momentum (Q-) dependence expected for interband scattering across the indirect gap, the scattering near E2 is independent of Q. This suggests that it arises from a spatially-localized excitation in the hybridization gap.
We report angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles numerical calculations for the band structure evolution of the 3d heavy-fermion compound CaCu3Ru4O12. Below 200 K, we observed an emergent hybridization gap between the Cu 3d el ectron-like band and the Ru 4d hole-like band and the resulting flat band features near the Fermi energy centered around the Brillouin zone corner. Our results confirm the non-Kondo nature of CaCu3Ru4O12, in which the Cu 3dxy electrons are less correlated and not in the Kondo limit. Comparison between theory and experiment also suggests that other mechanism such as nonlocal interactions or spin fluctuations beyond the local dynamical mean-field theory may be needed in order to give a quantitative explanation of the peculiar properties in this material.

Using reflective cross-polarized 2D THz time-domain spectroscopy in the range of 1-12 THz, we follow the trajectory of the out-of-equilibrium electron population in the low-bandgap semiconductor InSb. The 2D THz spectra show a set of distinct feature s at combinations of the plasma-edge and vibration frequencies. Using finite difference time domain simulations combined with a tight binding model of the band structure, we assign these features to electronic nonlinearities and show that the nonlinear response in the first picoseconds is dominated by coherent ballistic motion of the electrons. We demonstrate that this technique can be used to investigate the landscape of the band curvature near the Gamma-point as illustrated by the observation of anisotropy in the (100)-plane.

A key issue in heavy fermion research is how subtle changes in the hybridization between the 4$f$ (5$f$) and conduction electrons can result in fundamentally different ground states. CeRhIn$_5$ stands out as a particularly notable example: replacing Rh by either Co or Ir, located above or below Rh in the periodic table, antiferromagnetism gives way to superconductivity. In this photoemission study of CeRhIn$_5$, we demonstrate that the use of resonant ARPES with polarized light allows to extract detailed information on the 4$f$ crystal field states and details on the 4$f$ and conduction electron hybridization which together determine the ground state. We directly observe weakly dispersive Kondo resonances of $f$-electrons and identify two of the three Ce $4f_{5/2}^{1}$ crystal-electric-field levels and band-dependent hybridization, which signals that the hybridization occurs primarily between the Ce $4f$ states in the CeIn$_3$ layer and two more three-dimensional bands composed of the Rh $4d$ and In $5p$ orbitals in the RhIn$_2$ layer. Our results allow to connect the properties observed at elevated temperatures with the unusual low-temperature properties of this enigmatic heavy fermion compound.
