We compare several optical implementations of phase-covariant cloning machines. The experiments are based on copying of the polarization state of a single photon in bulk optics by special unbalanced beam splitter or by balanced beam splitter accompanied by a state filtering. Also the all-fiber based setup is discussed, where the information is encoded into spatial modes, i.e., the photon can propagate through two optical fibers. Each of the four implementations possesses some advantages and disadvantages that are discussed.

We investigate the multiphoton states generated by high-gain optical parametric amplification of a single injected photon, polarization encoded as a qubit. The experiment configuration exploits the optimal phase-covariant cloning in the high gain reg ime. The interference fringe pattern showing the non local transfer of coherence between the injected qubit and the mesoscopic amplified output field involving up to 4000 photons has been investigated. A probabilistic new method to extract full information about the multiparticle output wavefunction has been implemented.
We report the experimental realization of the purification protocol for single qubits sent through a depolarization channel. The qubits are associated with polarization encoded photon particles and the protocol is achieved by means of passive linear optical elements. The present approach may represent a convenient alternative to the distillation and error correction protocols of quantum information.

We propose a scheme to implement a heralded quantum memory for single-photon polarization qubits with a single atom trapped in an optical cavity. In this scheme, an injected photon only exchanges quantum state with the atom, so that the heralded stor age can be achieved by detecting the output photon. We also demonstrate that the scheme can be used for realizing the heralded quantum state transfer, exchange and entanglement distribution between distant nodes. The ability to detect whether the operation has succeeded or not is crucial for practical application.
We experimentally demonstrate the underlying physical mechanism of the recently proposed protocol for superreplication of quantum phase gates [W. Dur, P. Sekatski, and M. Skotiniotis, Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 120503 (2015)], which allows to produce up t o $N^2$ high-fidelity replicas from N input copies in the limit of large N. Our implementation of 1->2 replication of the single-qubit phase gates is based on linear optics and qubits encoded into states of single photons. We employ the quantum Toffoli gate to imprint information about the structure of an input two-qubit state onto an auxiliary qubit, apply the replicated operation to the auxiliary qubit, and then disentangle the auxiliary qubit from the other qubits by a suitable quantum measurement. We characterize the replication protocol by full quantum process tomography and observe good agreement of the experimental results with theory.
We report on experimental implementation of a machine-learned quantum gate driven by a classical control. The gate learns optimal phase-covariant cloning in a reinforcement learning scenario having fidelity of the clones as reward. In our experiment, the gate learns to achieve nearly optimal cloning fidelity allowed for this particular class of states. This makes it a proof of present-day feasibility and practical applicability of the hybrid machine learning approach combining quantum information processing with classical control. Moreover, our experiment can be directly generalized to larger interferometers where the computational cost of classical computer is much lower than the cost of boson sampling.
