In a metallic manganite like La(2/3)Sr(1/3)MnO(3), the substitution of Mn(+3) by Ga(+3) dilutes the ferromagnetic order and locally cancels the Jahn-Teller distortion, without heavily affecting the crystal structure. One can thus follow the changes in the charge dynamics induced by Ga, until the ferro-metallic manganite is turned into an insulator. Here this phenomenon is studied in detail through the infrared reflectivity of five samples of La(2/3)Sr(1/3)Mn(1-x)Ga(x)O(3), with x increasing from 0 to 0.30 and for 50 < T < 320 K. A simple model which links the measured optical parameters to the magnetization M(x, T) well describes the behavior of the plasma frequency, the scattering rate, and the mid-infrared absorption along the metal-to-insulator transition.

We report the results of Mn substitution for Ni in CeNi0.8Bi2, (i.e. CeNi0.8-xMnxBi2). All the samples have an antiferromagnetic ordered state below TN = 5.0 K due to localized 4f-magnetic moment on the Ce ions. Besides this antiferromagnetic orderin g caused by Ce, the magnetic and transport properties are abruptly changed with increasing Mn contents at the boundary composition of x = 0.4. The magnetic state is changed into a ferromagnetic state around 200 K for x > 0.4, where the electrical resistivity is strongly suppressed to become simple metallic. These results of ferromagnetism and metallicity can be explained by the double-exchange mechanism. The mixed valence states of Ni and Mn ions are confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). For x <= 0.4, the initial Ni3+ state gradually changes to the Ni2+ state with increasing x up to 0.4. On further increase of x > 0.4, the Ni2+ state is substituted for the Mn2+ state, which gradually changes to the final Mn3+ state. We also present an inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements on CeNi0.8Bi2 (i.e. x=0) between 1.2 and 12 K. The high energy INS study reveals the presence of two well defined crystal electric field (CEF) excitations near 9 meV and 19 meV at 1.2 K and 6 K, while the low energy INS study reveals the presence of quasi-elastic scattering above 4 K. We will discuss our INS results of CeNi0.8Bi2 based on the crystal electric field model.
The structure, electronic, and magnetic properties of the Mo-doped perovskite La0.7Ca0.3Mn1-xMoxO3 (x < 0.1) have been studied. A significant increase in resistivity and lattice parameters were observed with Mo doping. A marginal decrease in the Curi e temperature Tc and the associated metal-insulator transition Tp were observed. Magnetization data reveal that long-range ferromagnetic ordering persists in all samples studied and the saturation moment decreases linearly as x increases. Enhancement in magnetoresistance at near Tc in the Mo-doped compounds with an optimum doping value x = 0.05 was observed. The overall experimental results can be explained by considering the induced Mn2+ ions with Mo6+ in the Mo-doped systems, with the strong FM coupling between Mn4+/2+- O - Mn3+.
Magnetic materials hosting topological spin textures like magnetic skyrmion exhibit nontrivial Hall effect, namely, topological Hall effect (THE). In this study, we demonstrate the emergence of THE in thin films of half-metallic perovskite manganites . To stabilize magnetic skyrmions, we control the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy by imposing a compressive epitaxial strain as well as by introducing a small Ru doping. When the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy is tuned so that it is balanced with the magnetic dipolar interaction, the film exhibits a sizable THE in a magnetization reversal process. Real-space observations indicate the formation of skyrmions and some of them have high topological charge number. The present result opens up the possibility for novel functionalities that emerge under keen competition between the skyrmion phase and other rich phases of perovskite manganites with various orders in spin, charge, and orbital degrees of freedom.
We report on a systematic study of optical properties of (Ga,Mn)As epilayers spanning the wide range of accessible substitutional Mn_Ga dopings. The growth and post-growth annealing procedures were optimized for each nominal Mn doping in order to obt ain films which are as close as possible to uniform uncompensated (Ga,Mn)As mixed crystals. We observe a broad maximum in the mid-infrared absorption spectra whose position exhibits a prevailing blue-shift for increasing Mn-doping. In the visible range, a peak in the magnetic circular dichroism blue shifts with increasing Mn-doping. These observed trends confirm that disorder-broadened valence band states provide a better one-particle representation for the electronic structure of high-doped (Ga,Mn)As with metallic conduction than an energy spectrum assuming the Fermi level pinned in a narrow impurity band.

The multiferroic RMn2O5 family, where R is rare-earth ion or Y, exhibits rich physics of multiferroicity which has not yet well understood, noting that multiferroicity is receiving attentions for promising application potentials. DyMn2O5 is a represe ntative member of this family. The ferroelectric polarization in DyMn2O5 is claimed to have two anti-parallel components: one (PDM) from the symmetric exchange striction between the Dy3+-Mn4+ interactions and the other (PMM) from the symmetric exchange striction between the Mn3+-Mn4+ interactions. We investigate the evolutions of the two components upon a partial substitution of Mn3+ by nonmagnetic Al3+ in order to tailor the Mn-Mn interactions and then to modulate component PMM in DyMn2-x/2Alx/2O5. It is revealed that the ferroelectric polarization can be successfully reversed by the Al-substitution via substantially suppressing the Mn3+-Mn4+ interactions and thus the PMM. The Dy3+-Mn4+ interactions and the polarization component PDM can sustain against the substitution until a level as high as x=0.2. In addition, the independent Dy spin ordering is shifted remarkably down to an extremely low temperature due to the Al3+ substitution. The present work not only confirms the existence of the two anti-parallel polarization components but also unveils the possibility of tailoring them independently.
