A simple stochastic formulation of the multiple scattering representation solution of the classical linear incoherent trapping problem is presented for a broad audience. A clear connection with the alternative Holsteins solution ansatz is emphasized by the (re)interpretation of the fundamental mode as the one associated with a relaxed nonchanging spatial distribution of excitation. Expressions for overall relaxation parameters (ensemble emission yield and lifetime) as well as time-resolved (decay and spatial distribution) and steady-state quantities (spectra and spatial distribution) are given with the fundamental mode contribution singled out. The multiple scattering representation is advocated for final undergraduate and beginning graduate physics instruction based on physical insight and computation feasibility. This will be illustrated in the following instalment of this contribution.

A computational model study for complete frequency redistribution linear incoherent two-level atomic radiation trapping in optically dense media using the multiple scattering representation is presented. This model study discuss at length the influen ce of the spectral distributions, overall opacity and emission quantum yield to trapping distorted ensemble quantities stressing physical insight and with a non-specialist audience in mind. Macroscopic reemission yield, lifetime, steady state spectra and spatial distributions are calculated as a function of intrinsic emission yield, opacity and external excitation mode for Doppler, Lorentz and Voigt lineshapes. The work could constitute the basis for a final undergraduate or beginning graduate project in computational physics instruction and implements the analytical developments of the previous instalment of this contribution.
We review the main aspects of multiple photoionization processes in atoms exposed to intense, short wavelength radiation. The main focus is the theoretical framework for the description of such processes as well as the conditions under which direct m ultiphoton multiple ionization processes can dominate over the sequential ones. We discuss in detail the mechanisms available in different wavelength ranges from the infrared to the hard X-rays. The effect of field fluctuations, present at this stage in all SASE free-electron-laser (FEL) facilities, as well as the effect of the interaction volume integration, are also discussed.
Raman interactions in alkali vapours are used in applications such as atomic clocks, optical signal processing, generation of squeezed light and Raman quantum memories for temporal multiplexing. To achieve a strong interaction the alkali ensemble nee ds both a large optical depth and a high level of spin-polarisation. We implement a technique known as quenching using a molecular buffer gas which allows near-perfect spin-polarisation of over $99.5%$ in caesium vapour at high optical depths of up to $sim 2 times 10^5$; a factor of 4 higher than can be achieved without quenching. We use this system to explore efficient light storage with high gain in a GHz bandwidth Raman memory.
Engineering Thermodynamics has been the core course of many science and engineering majors around the world, including energy and power, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, aerospace, cryogenic refrigeration, food engineering, chemical enginee ring, and environmental engineering, among which gas power cycle is one of the important contents. However, many Engineering Thermodynamics textbooks focus only on evaluating the thermal efficiency of gas power cycle, while the important concept of specific cycle work is ignored. Based on the generalized temperature-entropy diagram for the gas power cycles proposed by the authors, an ideal Otto cycle and an ideal Miller-Diesel cycle are taking as examples for the thermodynamic analyses of gas power cycles. The optimum compression ratio (or the pressure ratio) for the maximum specific cycle work or the maximum mean effective pressure is analyzed and determined. The ideal Otto and the ideal Miller-Diesel cycles, and also other gas power cycles for movable applications, are concluded that the operation under the maximum specific cycle work or the maximum mean effective pressure, instead of under the higher efficiency, is more economic and more reasonable. We concluded that the very important concept, i.e., the optimum compression (or pressure) ratio for the gas power cycles, should be emphasized in the Engineering Thermodynamics teaching process and in the latter revised or the newly edited textbooks, in order to better guide the engineering applications.

The quasiclassical correction to the Molieres formula for multiple scattering is derived. The consideration is based on the scattering amplitude, obtained with the first quasiclassical correction taken into account for arbitrary localized but not sph erically symmetric potential. Unlike the leading term, the correction to the Molieres formula contains the target density $n$ and thickness $L$ not only in the combination $nL$ (areal density). Therefore, this correction can be reffered to as the bulk density correction. It turns out that the bulk density correction is small even for high density. This result explains the wide region of applicability of the Molieres formula.
