We present a 127deg x 63deg extinction map of the Anticenter of the Galaxy, based on <J-H> and <H-K> colour excess maps from 2MASS. This 8001 square degree map with a resolution of 4 arcminutes is provided as online material. The colour excess ratio <J-H> / <H-K> is used to determine the power law index of the reddening law (beta) for individual regions contained in the area (e.g. Orion, Perseus, Taurus, Auriga, Monoceros, Camelopardalis, Cassiopeia). On average we find a dominant value of beta=1.8+-0.2 for the individual clouds, in agreement with the canonical value for the interstellar medium. We also show that there is an internal scatter of beta values in these regions, and that in some areas more than one dominant beta value is present. This indicates large scale variations in the dust properties. The analysis of the A_V values within individual regions shows a change in the slope of the column density distribution with distance. This can either be attributed to a change in the governing physical processes in molecular clouds on spatial scales of about 1pc or an A_V dilution with distance in our map.

We present three 14400 square degree relative extinction maps of the Galactic Plane (|b|<20degrees) obtained from 2MASS using accumulative star counts (Wolf diagrams). This method is independent of the colour of the stars and the variation of extinct ion with wavelength. Stars were counted in 3.5x3.5 boxes, every 20. 1x1degree surrounding fields were chosen for reference, hence the maps represent local extinction enhancements and ignore any contribution from the ISM or very large clouds. Data reduction was performed on a Beowulf-type cluster (in approximately 120 hours). Such a cluster is ideal for this type of work as areas of the sky can be independently processed in parallel. We studied how extinction depends on wavelength in all of the high extinction regions detected and within selected dark clouds. On average a power law opacity index (beta) of 1.0 to 1.8 in the NIR was deduced. The index however differed significantly from region to region and even within individual dark clouds. That said, generally it was found to be constant, or to increase, with wavelength within a particular region.

We present the reddening (E(V-I)) and Extinction maps in V-band (A_V) and I-band (A_I) for 48 Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment II (OGLE-II) Galactic bulge (GB) fields, covering a range of $-11^circ <l< 11^circ$, with the total area close to 1 1 square degrees. These measurements are based on two-band photometry of Red Clump Giant (RCG) stars in OGLE-II VI maps of GB. We confirm the anomalous value of the ratio of total to selective extinction $R_{VI} = A_V / E(V-I) = 1.9 sim 2.1$, depending on the line of sight, as measured by Udalski (2003). By using the average value of $R_{VI}=1.964$ with the standard deviation sdev=0.085, we measured E(V-I), A_V and A_I, and we obtained extinction and reddening maps with a high spatial resolution of $ 26.7sim 106.8$, depending on the stellar density of each field. We assumed that average, reddening corrected colours of red clump giants are the same in every field. The maps cover the range 0.42<E(V-I)<3.5, 0.83<A_V<6.9 and 0.41<A_I<3.4 mag respectively. The zero points of these maps are calibrated by using V-K colours of 20 RR Lyrae ab variables (RRab) in Baades window. The apparent reddening corrected I-band magnitudes of the RCGs change by +0.4 mag while the Galactic coordinate l varies from $+5^{circ}$ to $-5^{circ}$, indicating that these stars are in the Galactic Bar. The reddening corrected colour of RRab and RCGs in GB are consistent with colours of local stars, while in the past these colours were claimed to be different.

We combine near-infrared (2MASS) and mid-infrared (Spitzer-IRAC) photometry to characterize the IR extinction law (1.2-8 microns) over nearly 150 degrees of contiguous Milky Way midplane longitude. The relative extinctions in 5 passbands across these wavelength and longitude ranges are derived by calculating color excess ratios for G and K giant red clump stars in contiguous midplane regions and deriving the wavelength dependence of extinction in each one. Strong, monotonic variations in the extinction law shape are found as a function of angle from the Galactic center, symmetric on either side of it. These longitudinal variations persist even when dense interstellar regions, known a priori to have a shallower extinction curve, are removed. The increasingly steep extinction curves towards the outer Galaxy indicate a steady decrease in the absolute-to-selective extinction ratio (R_V) and in the mean dust grain size at greater Galactocentric angles. We note an increasing strength of the 8 micron extinction inflection at high Galactocentric angles and, using theoretical dust models, show that this behavior is consistent with the trend in R_V. Along several lines of sight where the solution is most feasible, A_lambda/A_Ks as a function of Galactic radius is estimated and shown to have a Galactic radial dependence. Our analyses suggest that the observed relationship between extinction curve shape and Galactic longitude is due to an intrinsic dependence of the extinction law on Galactocentric radius.

An improved high-resolution and deep A$_{Ks}$ foreground dust extinction map is presented for the Galactic disk area within $295^{circ} lesssim l lesssim 350^{circ}$, $-1.0^{circ} lesssim b lesssim +1.0^{circ}$. At some longitudes the map reaches up to $|b|sim2.25^{circ}$, for a total of $sim$148 deg$^2$. The map was constructed via the Rayleigh-Jeans Color Excess (RJCE) technique based on deep near-infrared (NIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) photometry. The new extinction map features a maximum bin size of 1, and relies on NIR observations from the Two Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) and new data from ESOs Vista Variables in the Via Lactea (VVV) survey, in concert with MIR observations from the Galactic Legacy Infrared Mid-Plane Survey Extraordinaire (GLIMPSE). The VVV photometry penetrates $sim$4 magnitudes fainter than 2MASS, and provides enhanced sampling of the underlying stellar populations in this heavily obscured region. Consequently, the new results supersede existing RJCE maps tied solely to brighter photometry, revealing a systematic underestimation of extinction in prior work that was based on shallower data. The new high-resolution and large-scale extinction map presented here is readily available to the community through a web query interface.
We compare the most successful and widely used map of Galactic dust extinction, provided by Schlegel, Finkbeiner & Davis (1998; hereafter SFD), to the galaxy number counts in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) photometric/spectroscopic DR4 sample. W e divide the SDSS survey area into 69 disjoint subregions according to the dust extinction provided by SFD and compare the surface number density of galaxies in each subregion. As expected, the galaxy surface number density decreases with increasing extinction but only for SFD extinction values above about 0.1 to 0.2 magnitudes (depending on the band). At lower values of the SFD extinction, we find that the sky surface density of galaxies increases with increasing extinction, precisely the opposite of the effect expected from Galactic dust. We suggest that the far infrared (FIR) brightness of the sky in regions of true low dust extinction is significantly ``contaminated by the FIR emission from background galaxies. We show that such an explanation is both qualitatively and quantitatively consistent with the available data. Based on this interpretation we conclude that systematic errors in the SFD extinction map due to extragalactic FIR emission are quite small, of order hundredths of a magnitude, but nevertheless statistically detectable.
