We examine the development of a transient spiral arm in a disk galaxy made up of both gas and stars. To this end we have performed numerical simulations in a shearing sheet (basically a rectangular patch of a disc) that contains gas in the form of clouds behaving like Brahics (1977) sticky particles, and stars that appear as a background continuum providing the perturbation forces. These are computed from the theory of swing amplification, using Fuchs (1991) work. We describe the evolution of our model under a single and under recurring swing amplification events, discerning three phases. Furthermore, we give an interpretation of this evolution in terms of a variation of the epicyclic frequency with the distance to the wave crest. We also assess the importance of self gravity in the gas for our results.

Gas response to the underlying stellar spirals is explored for M81 using unmagnetized hydrodynamic simulations. Constrained within the uncertainty of observations, 18 simulations are carried out to study the effects of selfgravity and to cover the pa rameter space comprising three different sound speeds and three different arm strengths. The results are confronted with those data observed at wavelengths of 8 $mu$m and 21 cm. In the outer disk, the ring-like structure observed in 8 $mu$m image is consistent with the response of cold neutral medium with an effective sound speed 7 km s$^{-1}$, while for the inner disk, the presence of spiral shocks can be understood as a result of 4:1 resonances associated with the warm neutral medium with an effective sound speed 19 km s$^{-1}$. Simulations with single effective sound speed alone cannot simultaneously explain the structures in the outer and inner disks. This justifies the coexistence of cold and warm neutral media in M81. The anomalously high streaming motions observed in the northeast arm and the outward shifted turning points in the iso-velocity contours seen along the southwest arm are interpreted as signatures of interactions with companion galaxies. The level of simulated streaming motions narrows down the uncertainty of observed arm strength toward larger amplitudes.

A rigorous theory for the generation of a large-scale magnetic field by random non-helically forced motions of a conducting fluid combined with a linear shear is presented in the analytically tractable limit of low Rm and weak shear. The dynamo is ki nematic and due to fluctuations in the net (volume-averaged) electromotive force. This is a minimal proof-of-concept quasilinear calculation aiming to put the shear dynamo, a new effect recently found in numerical experiments, on a firm theoretical footing. Numerically observed scalings of the wavenumber and growth rate of the fastest growing mode, previously not understood, are derived analytically. The simplicity of the model suggests that shear dynamo action may be a generic property of sheared magnetohydrodynamic turbulence.
Motivated by a recent experiment, we study the dynamics of bosons in a disordered optical lattice, interacting with a variably sized bath of disorder free atoms. As the number of particles in the bath is increased, there is a transition between local ized and ergodic behavior, which are characterized by the long-time behavior of an initial density wave. We model the dynamics with a stochastic mean field theory, reproducing the central observations of the experiment. A key conclusion from our study is that particle loss plays an important role.
Aside from the grand-design stellar spirals appearing in the disk of M81, a pair of stellar spiral arms situated well inside the bright bulge of M81 has been recently discovered by Kendall et al. (2008). The seemingly unrelated pairs of spirals pose a challenge to the theory of spiral density waves. To address this problem, we have constructed a three component model for M81, including the contributions from a stellar disk, a bulge, and a dark matter halo subject to observational constraints. Given this basic state for M81, a modal approach is applied to search for the discrete unstable spiral modes that may provide an understanding for the existence of both spiral arms. It is found that the apparently separated inner and outer spirals can be interpreted as a single trailing spiral mode. In particular, these spirals share the same pattern speed 25.5 km s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$ with a corotation radius of 9.03 kpc. In addition to the good agreement between the calculated and the observed spiral pattern, the variation of the spiral amplitude can also be naturally reproduced.
We develop a framework for magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) simulations in a local cylindrical shearing box by extending the formulation of the Cartesian shearing box. We construct shearing-periodic conditions at the radial boundaries of a simulation box from the conservation relations of the basic MHD equations, taking into account the explicit radial dependence of physical quantities. We demonstrate quasi-steady mass accretion, which cannot be handled by the standard Cartesian shearing box model, with an ideal MHD simulation in a vertically unstratified cylindrical shearing box up to 200 rotations. In this demonstrative run we set up (i) net vertical magnetic flux, (ii) a locally isothermal equation of state, and (iii) a sub-Keplerian equilibrium rotation, whereas the sound velocity and the initial Alfven velocity have the same radial dependence as that of the Keplerian velocity. Inward mass accretion is induced to balance with the outward angular momentum flux of the MHD turbulence triggered by the magnetorotational instability in a self-consistent manner. We discuss detailed physical properties of the saturated magnetic field, in comparison to the results of a Cartesian shearing box simulation.
