A rigorous theory for the generation of a large-scale magnetic field by random non-helically forced motions of a conducting fluid combined with a linear shear is presented in the analytically tractable limit of low Rm and weak shear. The dynamo is kinematic and due to fluctuations in the net (volume-averaged) electromotive force. This is a minimal proof-of-concept quasilinear calculation aiming to put the shear dynamo, a new effect recently found in numerical experiments, on a firm theoretical footing. Numerically observed scalings of the wavenumber and growth rate of the fastest growing mode, previously not understood, are derived analytically. The simplicity of the model suggests that shear dynamo action may be a generic property of sheared magnetohydrodynamic turbulence.

We explore the growth of large-scale magnetic fields in a shear flow, due to helicity fluctuations with a finite correlation time, through a study of the Kraichnan-Moffatt model of zero-mean stochastic fluctuations of the $alpha$ parameter of dynamo theory. We derive a linear integro-differential equation for the evolution of large-scale magnetic field, using the first-order smoothing approximation and the Galilean invariance of the $alpha$-statistics. This enables construction of a model that is non-perturbative in the shearing rate $S$ and the $alpha$-correlation time $tau_alpha$. After a brief review of the salient features of the exactly solvable white-noise limit, we consider the case of small but non-zero $tau_alpha$. When the large-scale magnetic field varies slowly, the evolution is governed by a partial differential equation. We present modal solutions and conditions for the exponential growth rate of the large-scale magnetic field, whose drivers are the Kraichnan diffusivity, Moffatt drift, Shear and a non-zero correlation time. Of particular interest is dynamo action when the $alpha$-fluctuations are weak; i.e. when the Kraichnan diffusivity is positive. We show that in the absence of Moffatt drift, shear does not give rise to growing solutions. But shear and Moffatt drift acting together can drive large scale dynamo action with growth rate $gamma propto |S|$.
We investigate the generation of large scale magnetic fields in the universe from quantum fluctuations produced in the inflationary stage. By coupling these quantum fluctuations to the dilaton field and Ricci scalar, we show that the magnetic fields with the strength observed today can be produced. We consider two situations: First, the evolution of dilaton ends at the onset of the reheating stage. Second, the dilaton continues its evolution after reheating and then decays. In both cases, we come back to the usual Maxwell equations after inflation and then calculate present magnetic fields.
In this paper, results of 2.5-dimensional magnetohydrodynamical simulations are reported for the magnetic reconnection of non-perfectly antiparallel magnetic fields. The magnetic field has a component perpendicular to the computational plane, that is , guide field. The angle theta between magnetic field lines in two half regions is a key parameter in our simulations whereas the initial distribution of the plasma is assumed to be simple; density and pressure are uniform except for the current sheet region. Alfven waves are generated at the reconnection point and propagate along the reconnected field line. The energy fluxes of the Alfven waves and magneto-acoustic waves (slow mode and fast mode) generated by the magnetic reconnection are measured. Each flux shows the similar time evolution independent of theta. The percentage of the energies (time integral of energy fluxes) carried by the Alfven waves and magneto-acoustic waves to the released magnetic energy are calculated. The Alfven waves carry 38.9%, 36.0%, and 29.5% of the released magnetic energy at the maximum (theta=80^circ) in the case of beta=0.1, 1, and 20 respectively, where beta is the plasma beta (the ratio of gas pressure to magnetic pressure). The magneto-acoustic waves carry 16.2% (theta=70^circ), 25.9% (theta=60^circ), and 75.0% (theta=180^circ) of the energy at the maximum. Implications of these results for solar coronal heating and acceleration of high-speed solar wind are discussed.
We present a new magnetic field generation mechanism in underdense plasmas driven by the beating of two, co-propagating, Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) orbital angular momentum (OAM) laser pulses with different frequencies and also different twist indices. T he resulting twisted ponderomotive force drives up an electron plasma wave with a helical rotating structure. To second order, there is a nonlinear rotating current leading to the onset of an intense, static axial magnetic field, which persists over a long time in the plasma (ps scale) after the laser pulses have passed by. The results are confirmed in three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations and also theoretical analysis. For the case of 300 fs duration, 3.8x10^17 W/cm^2 peak laser intensity we observe magnetic field of up to 0.4 MG. This new method of magnetic field creation may find applications in charged beam collimation and controlled fusion.

We examine the development of a transient spiral arm in a disk galaxy made up of both gas and stars. To this end we have performed numerical simulations in a shearing sheet (basically a rectangular patch of a disc) that contains gas in the form of cl ouds behaving like Brahics (1977) sticky particles, and stars that appear as a background continuum providing the perturbation forces. These are computed from the theory of swing amplification, using Fuchs (1991) work. We describe the evolution of our model under a single and under recurring swing amplification events, discerning three phases. Furthermore, we give an interpretation of this evolution in terms of a variation of the epicyclic frequency with the distance to the wave crest. We also assess the importance of self gravity in the gas for our results.
