Very recently, increasing attention has been focused on non-Abelian topological charges, e.g. the quaternion group Q8. Different from Abelian topological band insulators, these systems involve multiple tangled bulk bandgaps and support non-trivial edge states that manifest the non-Abelian topological features. Furthermore, a system with even or odd number of bands will exhibit significant difference in non-Abelian topological classifications. Up to now, there is scant research investigating the even-band non-Abelian topological insulators. Here, we both theoretically explored and experimentally realized a four-band PT (inversion and time-reversal) symmetric system, where two new classes of topological charges as well as edge states are comprehensively studied. We illustrate their difference from four-dimensional rotation senses on the stereographically projected Clifford tori. We show the evolution of bulk topology by extending the 1D Hamiltonian onto a 2D plane and provide the accompanying edge state distributions following an analytical method. Our work presents an exhaustive study of four-band non-Abelian topological insulators and paves the way to other even band systems.

In the past decades, topological concepts have emerged to classify matter states beyond the Ginzburg-Landau symmetry breaking paradigm. The underlying global invariants are usually characterized by integers, such as Chern or winding numbers. Very rec ently, band topology characterized by non-Abelian topological charges has been proposed, which possess non-commutative and fruitful braiding structures with multiple (>1) bandgaps entangled together. Despite many potential exquisite applications including quantum computations, no experimental observation of non-Abelian topological charges has been reported. Here, we experimentally observe the non-Abelian topological charges in a PT (parity and time-reversal) symmetric system. More importantly, we propose non-Abelian bulk-edge correspondence, where edge states are found to be described by non-Abelian charges. Our work opens the door towards non-Abelian topological phase characterization and manipulation.

Topological insulators materialize a topological quantum state of matter where unusual gapless metallic state protected by time-reversal symmetry appears at the edge or surface. Their discovery stimulated the search for new topological states protect ed by other symmetries, and a recent theory predicted the existence of topological crystalline insulators (TCIs) in which the metallic surface states are protected by mirror symmetry of the crystal. However, its experimental verification has not yet been reported. Here we show the first and definitive experimental evidence for the TCI phase in tin telluride (SnTe) which was recently predicted to be a TCI. Our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy shows clear signature of a metallic Dirac-cone surface band with its Dirac point slightly away from the edge of the surface Brillouin zone in SnTe. On the other hand, such a gapless surface state is absent in a cousin material lead telluride (PbTe), in line with the theoretical prediction. Our result establishes the presence of a TCI phase, and opens new avenues for exotic topological phenomena.
Topological insulators are new states of matter in which the topological phase originates from symmetry breaking. Recently, time-reversal invariant topological insulators were demonstrated for classical wave systems, such as acoustic systems, but lim ited by inter-pseudo-spin or inter-valley backscattering. This challenge can be effectively overcome via breaking the time-reversal symmetry. Here, we report the first experimental realization of acoustic topological insulators with nonzero Chern numbers, viz., acoustic Chern insulator (ACI), by introducing an angular-momentum-biased resonator array with broken Lorentz reciprocity. High Q-factor resonance is leveraged to reduce the required speed of rotation. Experimental results show that the ACI featured with a stable and uniform metafluid flow bias supports one-way nonreciprocal transport of sound at the boundaries, which is topologically immune to the defect-induced scatterings. Our work opens up opportunities for exploring unique observable topological phases and developing practical nonreciprocal devices in acoustics.
Intrinsic magnetic topological insulator (TI) is a stoichiometric magnetic compound possessing both inherent magnetic order and topological electronic states. Such a material can provide a shortcut to various novel topological quantum effects but rem ains elusive experimentally so far. Here, we report the experimental realization of high-quality thin films of an intrinsic magnetic TI---MnBi$_2$Te$_4$---by alternate growth of a Bi$_2$Te$_3$ quintuple-layer and a MnTe bilayer with molecular beam epitaxy. The material shows the archetypical Dirac surface states in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and is demonstrated to be an antiferromagnetic topological insulator with ferromagnetic surfaces by magnetic and transport measurements as well as first-principles calculations. The unique magnetic and topological electronic structures and their interplays enable the material to embody rich quantum phases such as quantum anomalous Hall insulators and axion insulators in a well-controlled way.
When a topological insulator (TI) is made into a nanowire, the interplay between topology and size quantization gives rise to peculiar one-dimensional (1D) states whose energy dispersion can be manipulated by external fields. With proximity-induced s uperconductivity, these 1D states offer a tunable platform for Majorana zero modes (MZMs) that can be robust even in the presence of disorder. While the realization of the peculiar 1D states was recently confirmed, realization of robust proximity-induced superconductivity in TI nanowires remains a challenge. Here we report novel realization of superconducting TI nanowires based on (Bi$_{1-x}$Sb$_x$)$_2$Te$_3$ (BST) thin films: When two rectangular pads of Pd are deposited on a BST thin film with a separation of 100 - 200 nm, the BST beneath the pads is converted into a superconductor, leaving a nanowire of BST in-between. We found that the interface is epitaxial and has a high electronic transparency, leading to a robust superconductivity induced in the BST nanowire. Due to its suitable geometry for gate-tuning, this new platform is promising for future studies of MZMs.
