The effect of a magnetic field on the characteristics of capacitively coupled radio frequency discharges is investigated and found to be substantial. A one-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation shows that geometrically symmetric discharges can be asymmetrized by applying a spatially inhomogeneous magnetic field. This effect is similar to the recently discovered electrical asymmetry effect. Both effects act independently, they can work in the same direction or compensate each other. Also the ion energy distribution functions at the electrodes are strongly affected by the magnetic field, although only indirectly. The field influences not the dynamics of the sheath itself but rather its operating conditions, i.e., the ion flux through it and voltage drop across it. To support this interpretation, the particle-in-cell results are compared with the outcome of the recently proposed ensemble-in-spacetime algorithm. Although that scheme resolves only the sheath and neglects magnetization, it is able to reproduce the ion energy distribution functions with very good accuracy, regardless of whether the discharge is magnetized or not.

Using particle-in-cell simulations of relativistic laser plasma wakes in the presence of an external magnetic field, we demonstrate that there exists a parameter window where the dynamics of the magnetized wake channel are largely independent of the laser wavelength $lambda_{rm las}$. One condition for this manifestation of limited similarity is that the electron density $n_{rm e}$ is highly subcritical, so that the plasma does not affect the laser. The freedom to choose a convenient laser wavelength can be useful in experiments and simulations. In simulations, an up-scaled wavelength (and, thus, a coarser mesh and larger time steps) reduces the computational effort, while limited similarity ensures that the overall structure and evolutionary phases of the wake channel are preserved. In our demonstrative example, we begin with a terrawatt$cdot$picosecond pulse from a ${rm CO}_2$ laser with $lambda_{rm las} = 10,mu{rm m}$, whose field reaches a relativistic amplitude at the center of a sub-millimeter-sized focal spot. The laser is shot into a sparse deuterium gas ($n_{rm e} sim 10^{13},{rm cm}^{-3}$) in the presence of a tesla-scale magnetic field. Limited similarity is demonstrated in 2D for $4,mu{rm m} leq lambda_{rm las} leq 40,mu{rm m}$ and is expected to extend to shorter wavelengths. Assuming that this limited similarity also holds in 3D, increasing the wavelength to $40,mu{rm m}$ enables us to simulate the after-glow dynamics of the wake channel all the way into the nanosecond regime.
The paper provides a tutorial to the conceptual layout of a self-consistently coupled Particle-In-Cell/Test-Particle model for the kinetic simulation of sputtering transport in capacitively coupled plasmas at low gas pressures. It explains when a kin etic approach is actually needed and which numerical concepts allow for the inherent nonequilibrium behavior of the charged and neutral particles. At the example of a generic sputtering discharge both the fundamentals of the applied Monte Carlo methods as well as the conceptual details in the context of the sputtering scenario are elaborated on. Finally, two in the context of sputtering transport simulations often exploited assumptions, namely on the energy distribution of impinging ions as well as on the test particle approach, are validated for the proposed example discharge.

We develop an Explicitly Solvable Energy-Conserving (ESEC) algorithm for the Stochastic Differential Equation (SDE) describing the pitch-angle scattering process in magnetized plasmas. The Cayley transform is used to calculate both the deterministic gyromotion and stochastic scattering, affording the algorithm to be explicitly solvable and exactly energy conserving. An unusual property of the SDE for pitch-angle scattering is that its coefficients diverge at the zero velocity and do not satisfy the global Lipschitz condition. Consequently, when standard numerical methods, such as the Euler-Maruyama (EM), are applied, numerical convergence is difficult to establish. For the proposed ESEC algorithm, its energy-preserving property enables us to overcome this obstacle. We rigorously prove that the ESEC algorithm is order 1/2 strongly convergent. This result is confirmed by detailed numerical studies. For the case of pitch-angle scattering in a magnetized plasma with a constant magnetic field, the numerical solution is benchmarked against the analytical solution, and excellent agreements are found.

The highly advanced treatment of surfaces as etching and deposition is mainly enabled by the extraordinary properties of technological plasmas. The primary factors that influence these processes are the flux and the energy of various species, particu larly ions, that impinge the substrate surface. These features can be theoretically described using the ion energy distribution function (IEDF). The article is intended to summarize the fundamental concepts of modeling and simulation of IEDFs from simplified models to self-consistent plasma simulations. Finally, concepts for controlling the IEDF are discussed.

A fluid system is derived to describe electrostatic magnetized plasma turbulence at scales somewhat larger than the Larmor radius of a given species. It is related to the Hasegawa- Mima equation, but does not conserve enstrophy, and, as a result, exh ibits a forward cascade of energy, to small scales. The inertial-range energy spectrum is argued to be shallower than a -11/3 power law, as compared to the -5 law of the Hasegawa-Mima enstrophy cascade. This property, confirmed here by direct numerical simulations of the fluid system, may help explain the fluctuation spectrum observed in gyrokinetic simulations of streamer-dominated electron-temperature-gradient driven turbulence [Plunk et al., 2019], and also possibly some cases of ion-temperature-gradient driven turbulence where zonal flows are suppressed [Plunk et al., 2017].
