We present electronic structure calculations for the one-dimensional magnetic chain compounds Ca_3CoRhO_6 and Ca_3FeRhO_6. The calculations are based on density functional theory and the local density approximation. We use the augmented spherical wave (ASW) method. The observed alternation of low- and high-spin states along the Co-Rh and Fe-Rh chains is related to differences in the oxygen coordination of the transition metal sites. Due to strong hybridization the O 2p states are polarized, giving rise to extended localized magnetic moments centered at the high-spin sites. Strong metal-metal overlap along the chains leads to a substantial contribution of the low-spin Rh 4d_{3z^2-r^2} orbitals to the exchange coupling of the extended moments. Interestingly, this mechanism holds for both compounds, even though the coupling is ferromagnetic for the cobalt and antiferromagnetic for the iron compound. However, our results allow to understand the different types of coupling from the filling dependence of the electronic properties.

The intermediate valent systems TmSe and SmB6 have been investigated up to 16 and 18 GPa by ac microcalorimetry with a pressure (p) tuning realized in situ at low temperature. For TmSe, the transition from an antiferromagnetic insulator for p<3 GPa t o an antiferromagnetic metal at higher pressure has been confirmed. A drastic change in the p variation of the Neel temperature (Tn) is observed at 3 GPa. In the metallic phase (p>3 GPa), Tn is found to increase linearly with p. A similar linear p increase of Tn is observed for the quasitrivalent compound TmS which is at ambiant pressure equivalent to TmSe at p=7 GPa. In the case of SmB6 long range magnetism has been detected above p=8 GPa, i.e. at a pressure slightly higher than the pressure of the insulator to metal transition. However a homogeneous magnetic phase occurs only above 10 GPa. The magnetic and electronic properties are related to the renormalization of the 4f wavefunction either to the divalent or the trivalent configurations. As observed in SmS, long range magnetism in SmB6 occurs already far below the pressure where a trivalent Sm3+ state will be reached. It seems possible, to describe roughly the physical properties of the intermediate valence equilibrium by assuming formulas for the Kondo lattice temperature depending on the valence configuration. Comparison is also made with the appearance of long range magnetism in cerium and ytterbium heavy fermion compounds.
The magnetic behavior of the quaternary compounds, RCr2Si2C (R = La, Ce), has been investigated by magnetization (M) and heat-capacity (C) measurements (1.8-300 K) in the bulk polycrystals and nano forms (<1 {mu}m) obtained by high-energy balling. Ou r finding is that Cr appears to exhibit magnetic ordering of an itinerant type at low temperatures (<20 K) in the bulk form, as inferred from a combined look at all the data. The magnetic ordering gets gradually suppressed with increasing milling time. Evidence for a mixed-valence state of Ce for the bulk form is obtained from the tendency of magnetic susceptibility to exhibit a maximum above 300 K. However, this feature vanishes in the nano form, which exhibits a Curie-Weiss behavior above 200 K as though Ce tends towards trivalency in these fine particles; in addition, there is a weak upturn in C/T below 10 K in the bulk, which becomes very prominent in the milled Ce-based specimens at lower temperatures, as though heavy-fermion behavior gets stronger in smaller particles.
Several spin systems with low dimensionality develop a spin-dimer phase within a molecular orbital below TS, competing with long-range antiferromagnetic order. Very often, preferential orbital occupancy and ordering are the actual driving force for d imerization, as in the so-called orbitally-driven spin-Peierls compounds (MgTi2O4, CuIr2S4, La4Ru2O10, NaTiSi2O6, etc.). Through a microscopic analysis of the thermal conductivity k (T) in La4Ru2O10, we show that the orbital occupancy fluctuates rapidly above TS, resulting in an orbital-liquid state. The strong orbital-lattice coupling introduces dynamic bond-length fluctuations that scatter the phonons to produce a k (T) proportional to T (i.e. glass-like) above TS. This phonon-glass to phonon-crystal transition is shown to occur in other spin-dimer systems, like NaTiSi2O6, pointing to a general phenomenon.
Muon spin rotation technique is used to study magnetic ordering in ultra-pure samples of SrCu$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$O$_2$, an archetypical $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain system with a small amount of $S=1$ defects. The ordered state in the parent compound is shown to be highly homogeneous, contrary to previous report [M. Matsuda et al., Phys. Rev. B textbf{55}, R11953 (1997)]. Even minute amount of Ni impurities result in inhomogeneous order and a decrease of the transition temperature. At as little as $0.5$~% Ni concentration, magnetic ordering is entirely suppressed. The results are compared to previous theoretical studies of weakly coupled spin chains with site-defects.
In a recent paper by Schmitt et al. (arXiv:1402.1091), signs of two exchange interactions of one-dimensional alternating chains in distorted honeycomb systems of Na3Cu2SbO6 and Na2Cu2TeO6 are argued by theoretical calculations. Although the authors r eport that they have clarified that the interaction J1a is ferromagnetic between the spins within a structural dimer, and J1b is antiferromagnetic between these dimers, these results have been known for a long time by our two papers, which are cited by Schmitt et al.
