In this paper, we give a systematic description of the 1st Wireless Communication Artificial Intelligence (AI) Competition (WAIC) which is hosted by IMT-2020(5G) Promotion Group 5G+AI Work Group. Firstly, the framework of full channel state information (F-CSI) feedback problem and its corresponding channel dataset are provided. Then the enhancing schemes for DL-based F-CSI feedback including i) channel data analysis and preprocessing, ii) neural network design and iii) quantization enhancement are elaborated. The final competition results composed of different enhancing schemes are presented. Based on the valuable experience of 1st WAIC, we also list some challenges and potential study areas for the design of AI-based wireless communication systems.

Broadband access is key to ensuring robust economic development and improving quality of life. Unfortunately, the communication infrastructure deployed in rural areas throughout the world lags behind its urban counterparts due to low population densi ty and economics. This article examines the motivations and challenges of providing broadband access over vast rural regions, with an emphasis on the wireless aspect in view of its irreplaceable role in closing the digital gap. Applications and opportunities for future rural wireless communications are discussed for a variety of areas, including residential welfare, digital agriculture, and transportation. This article also comprehensively investigates current and emerging wireless technologies that could facilitate rural deployment. Although there is no simple solution, there is an urgent need for researchers to work on coverage, cost, and reliability of rural wireless access.
Wireless energy transfer (WET) is a promising solution to enable massive machine-type communications (mMTC) with low-complexity and low-powered wireless devices. Given the energy restrictions of the devices, instant channel state information at the t ransmitter (CSIT) is not expected to be available in practical WET-enabled mMTC. However, because it is common that the terminals appear spatially clustered, some degree of spatial correlation between their channels to the base station (BS) is expected to occur. The paper considers a massive antenna array at the BS for WET that only has access to i) the first and second order statistics of the Rician channel component of the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel and also to ii) the line-of-sight MIMO component. The optimal precoding scheme that maximizes the total energy available to the single-antenna devices is derived considering a continuous alphabet for the precoders, permitting any modulated or deterministic waveform. This may lead to some devices in the clusters being assigned a low fraction of the total available power in the cluster, creating a rather uneven situation among them. Consequently, a fairness criterion is introduced, imposing a minimum amount of power allocated to the terminals. A piece-wise linear harvesting circuit is considered at the terminals, with both saturation and a minimum sensitivity, and a constrained version of the precoder is also proposed by solving a non-linear programming problem. A paramount benefit of the constrained precoder is the encompassment of fairness in the power allocation to the different clusters. Moreover, given the polynomial complexity increase of the proposed unconstrained precoder, and the observed linear gain of the systems available sum-power with an increasing number of antennas at the ULA, the use of massive antenna arrays is desirable.
A plethora of demanding services and use cases mandate a revolutionary shift in the management of future wireless network resources. Indeed, when tight quality of service demands of applications are combined with increased complexity of the network, legacy network management routines will become unfeasible in 6G. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging as a fundamental enabler to orchestrate the network resources from bottom to top. AI-enabled radio access and AI-enabled core will open up new opportunities for automated configuration of 6G. On the other hand, there are many challenges in AI-enabled networks that need to be addressed. Long convergence time, memory complexity, and complex behaviour of machine learning algorithms under uncertainty as well as highly dynamic channel, traffic and mobility conditions of the network contribute to the challenges. In this paper, we survey the state-of-art research in utilizing machine learning techniques in improving the performance of wireless networks. In addition, we identify challenges and open issues to provide a roadmap for the researchers.
Many emerging technologies, such as ultra-massive multiple-input multiple-output (UM-MIMO), terahertz (THz) communications are under active discussion as promising technologies to support the extremely high access rate and superior network capacity i n the future sixth-generation (6G) mobile communication systems. However, such technologies are still facing many challenges for practical implementation. In particular, UM-MIMO and THz communication require extremely large number of radio frequency (RF) chains, and hence suffering from prohibitive hardware cost and complexity. In this article, we introduce a new paradigm to address the above issues, namely wireless communication enabled by programmable metasurfaces, by exploiting the powerful capability of metasurfaces in manipulating electromagnetic waves. We will first introduce the basic concept of programmable metasurfaces, followed by the promising paradigm shift in future wireless communication systems enabled by programmable metasurfaces. In particular, we propose two prospective paradigms of applying programmable metasurfaces in wireless transceivers: namely RF chain-free transmitter and space-down-conversion receiver, which both have great potential to simplify the architecture and reduce the hardware cost of future wireless transceivers. Furthermore, we present the design architectures, preliminary experimental results and main advantages of these new paradigms and discuss their potential opportunities and challenges toward ultra-massive 6G communications with low hardware complexity, low cost, and high energy efficiency.
We consider futuristic, intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS)-aided communication between a base station (BS) and a user equipment (UE) for two distinct scenarios: a single-input, single-output (SISO) system whereby the BS has a single antenna, and a multi-input, single-output (MISO) system whereby the BS has multiple antennas. For the considered IRS-assisted downlink, we compute the effective capacity (EC), which is a quantitative measure of the statistical quality-of-service (QoS) offered by a communication system experiencing random fading. For our analysis, we consider the two widely-known assumptions on channel state information (CSI) -- i.e., perfect CSI and no CSI, at the BS. Thereafter, we first derive the distribution of the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for both SISO and MISO scenarios, and subsequently derive closed-form expressions for the EC under perfect CSI and no CSI cases, for both SISO and MISO scenarios. Furthermore, for the SISO and MISO systems with no CSI, it turns out that the EC could be maximized further by searching for an optimal transmission rate $r^*$, which is computed by exploiting the iterative gradient-descent method. We provide extensive simulation results which investigate the impact of the various system parameters, e.g., QoS exponent, power budget, number of transmit antennas at the BS, number of reflective elements at the IRS etc., on the EC of the system.
