Symbiotic radio is a promising technology to achieve spectrum- and energy-efficient wireless communications, where the secondary backscatter device (BD) leverages not only the spectrum but also the power of the primary signals for its own information transmission. In return, the primary communication link can be enhanced by the additional multipaths created by the BD. This is known as the mutualism relationship of symbiotic radio. However, as the backscattering link is much weaker than the direct link due to double attenuations, the improvement of the primary link brought by one single BD is extremely limited. To address this issue and enable full mutualism of symbiotic radio, in this paper, we study symbiotic radio with massive number of BDs. For symbiotic radio multiple access channel (MAC) with successive interference cancellation (SIC), we first derive the achievable rate of both the primary and secondary communications, based on which a receive beamforming optimization problem is formulated and solved. Furthermore, considering the asymptotic regime of massive number of BDs, closed-form expressions are derived for the primary and the secondary communication rates, both of which are shown to be increasing functions of the number of BDs. This thus demonstrates that the mutualism relationship of symbiotic radio can be fully exploited with massive BD access.

In this paper, a novel bandwidth negotiation mechanism is proposed for massive devices wireless spectrum sharing, in which individual device locally negotiates bandwidth usage with neighbor devices and globally optimal spectrum utilization is achieve d through distributed decision-making. Since only sparse feedback is needed, the proposed mechanism can greatly reduce the signaling overhead. In order to solve the distributed optimization problem when massive devices coexist, mean field multi-agent reinforcement learning (MF-MARL) based bandwidth decision algorithm is proposed, which allow device make globally optimal decision leveraging only neighborhood observation. In simulation, distributed bandwidth negotiation between 1000 devices is demonstrated and the spectrum utilization rate is above 95%. The proposed method is beneficial to reduce spectrum conflicts, increase spectrum utilization for massive devices spectrum sharing.
Existing tag signal detection algorithms inevitably suffer from a high bit error rate (BER) due to the difficulties in estimating the channel state information (CSI). To eliminate the requirement of channel estimation and to improve the system perfor mance, in this paper, we adopt a deep transfer learning (DTL) approach to implicitly extract the features of communication channel and directly recover tag symbols. Inspired by the powerful capability of convolutional neural networks (CNN) in exploring the features of data in a matrix form, we design a novel covariance matrix aware neural network (CMNet)-based detection scheme to facilitate DTL for tag signal detection, which consists of offline learning, transfer learning, and online detection. Specifically, a CMNet-based likelihood ratio test (CMNet-LRT) is derived based on the minimum error probability (MEP) criterion. Taking advantage of the outstanding performance of DTL in transferring knowledge with only a few training data, the proposed scheme can adaptively fine-tune the detector for different channel environments to further improve the detection performance. Finally, extensive simulation results demonstrate that the BER performance of the proposed method is comparable to that of the optimal detection method with perfect CSI.
Ambient Backscatter Communication (AmBC) is an emerging communication technology that can enable green Internet-of-Things deployments. The widespread acceptance of this paradigm is limited by low Signal-to-Interference-Plus-Noise Ratio (SINR) of the signal impinging on the receiver antenna due to the strong direct path interference and unknown ambient signal. The adverse impact of these two factors can be mitigated by using non-coherent multi-antenna receivers, which is known to require higher SINR to reach Bit-Error-Rate (BER) performance of coherent receivers. However, in literature, coherent receivers for AmBC systems are little-studied because of unknown ambient signal, unknown location of AmBC tags, and varying channel conditions. In this paper, a coherent multi-antenna receiver, which does not require a prior information of the ambient signal, for decoding Binary-Phase-shift-Keying (BPSK) modulated signal is presented. The performance of the proposed receiver is compared with the ideal coherent receiver that has a perfect phase information, and also with the performance of non-coherent receiver, which assumes distributions for ambient signal and phase offset caused by excess length of the backscatter path. Comparative simulation results show the designed receiver can achieve the same BER-performance of the ideal coherent receiver with 1-dB more SINR, which corresponds to 5-dB or more gain with respect to non-coherent reception of On-Off-Keying modulated signals. Variation of the detection performance with the tag location shows that the coverage area is in the close vicinity of the transmitter and a larger region around the receiver, which is consistent with the theoretical results.

RF-powered backscatter communication is a promising new technology that can be deployed for battery-free applications such as internet of things (IoT) and wireless sensor networks (WSN). However, since this kind of communication is based on the ambie nt RF signals and battery-free devices, they are vulnerable to interference and jamming. In this paper, we model the interaction between the user and a smart interferer in an ambient backscatter communication network as a game. We design the utility functions of both the user and interferer in which the backscattering time is taken into the account. The convexity of both sub-game optimization problems is proved and the closed-form expression for the equilibrium of the Stackelberg game is obtained. Due to lack of information about the system SNR and transmission strategy of the interferer, the optimal strategy is obtained using the Q-learning algorithm in a dynamic iterative manner. We further introduce hotbooting Q-learning as an effective approach to expedite the convergence of the traditional Q-learning. Simulation results show that our approach can obtain considerable performance improvement in comparison to random and fixed backscattering time transmission strategies and improves the convergence speed of Q-Learning by about 31%.

The bistatic backscatter architecture, with its extended range, enables flexible deployment opportunities for backscatter devices. In this paper, we study the placement of power beacons (PBs) in bistatic backscatter networks to maximize the guarantee d coverage distance (GCD), defined as the distance from the reader within which backscatter devices are able to satisfy a given quality-of-service constraint. This work departs from conventional energy source placement problems by considering the performance of the additional backscatter link on top of the energy transfer link. We adopt and optimize a symmetric PB placement scheme to maximize the GCD. The optimal PB placement under this scheme is obtained using either analytically tractable expressions or an efficient algorithm. Numerical results provide useful insights into the impacts of various system parameters on the PB placement and the resulting GCD, plus the advantages of the adopted symmetric placement scheme over other benchmark schemes.
