Random Matrix Theory (RMT) provides a tool to understand physical systems in which spectral properties can be changed from Poissonian (integrable) to Wigner-Dyson (chaotic). Such transitions can be seen in Rosenzweig-Porter ensemble (RPE) by tuning the fluctuations in the random matrix elements. We show that integrable or chaotic regimes in any 2-level system can be uniquely controlled by the symmetry-breaking properties. We compute the Nearest Neighbour Spacing (NNS) distributions of these matrix ensembles and find that they exactly match with that of RPE. Our study indicates that the loss of integrability can be exactly mapped to the extent of disorder in 2-level systems.

We study analytically and numerically the dynamics of the generalized Rosenzweig-Porter model, which is known to possess three distinct phases: ergodic, multifractal and localized phases. Our focus is on the survival probability $R(t)$, the probabili ty of finding the initial state after time $t$. In particular, if the system is initially prepared in a highly-excited non-stationary state (wave packet) confined in space and containing a fixed fraction of all eigenstates, we show that $R(t)$ can be used as a dynamical indicator to distinguish these three phases. Three main aspects are identified in different phases. The ergodic phase is characterized by the standard power-law decay of $R(t)$ with periodic oscillations in time, surviving in the thermodynamic limit, with frequency equals to the energy bandwidth of the wave packet. In multifractal extended phase the survival probability shows an exponential decay but the decay rate vanishes in the thermodynamic limit in a non-trivial manner determined by the fractal dimension of wave functions. Localized phase is characterized by the saturation value of $R(ttoinfty)=k$, finite in the thermodynamic limit $Nrightarrowinfty$, which approaches $k=R(tto 0)$ in this limit.
The combined effect of disorder and symmetry-breaking fields on the two-dimensional XY model is examined. The study includes disorder in the interaction among spins in the form of random phase shifts as well as disorder in the local orientation of th e field. The phase diagrams are determined and the properties of the various phases and phase transitions are calculated. We use a renormalization group approach in the Coulomb gas representation of the model. Our results differ from those obtained for special cases in previous works. In particular, we find a changed topology of the phase diagram that is composed of phases with long-range order, quasi-long-range order, and short-range order. The discrepancies can be ascribed to a breakdown of the fugacity expansion in the Coulomb gas representation. Implications for physical systems such as planar Josephson junctions and the faceting of crystal surfaces are discussed.
We study the set of solutions of random k-satisfiability formulae through the cavity method. It is known that, for an interval of the clause-to-variables ratio, this decomposes into an exponential number of pure states (clusters). We refine substanti ally this picture by: (i) determining the precise location of the clustering transition; (ii) uncovering a second `condensation phase transition in the structure of the solution set for k larger or equal than 4. These results both follow from computing the large deviation rate of the internal entropy of pure states. From a technical point of view our main contributions are a simplified version of the cavity formalism for special values of the Parisi replica symmetry breaking parameter m (in particular for m=1 via a correspondence with the tree reconstruction problem) and new large-k expansions.
We compare the critical behavior of the short-range Ising spin glass with a spin glass with long-range interactions which fall off as a power sigma of the distance. We show that there is a value of sigma of the long-range model for which the critical behavior is very similar to that of the short-range model in four dimensions. We also study a value of sigma for which we find the critical behavior to be compatible with that of the three dimensional model, though we have much less precision than in the four-dimensional case.

In the strictly periodic setting, the electric polarization of inversion-symmetric solids with and without time-reversal symmetry and the isotropic magneto-electric response function of time-reversal symmetric insulators are known to be topological i nvariants displaying an exact $mathbb Z_2$ quantization. This quantization is stabilized by the symmetries. In the present work, we investigate the fate of such symmetry-stabilized topological invariants in the presence of a disorder which breaks the symmetries but restores them on average. Using a rigorous analysis, we conclude that the strict quantization still holds in these conditions. Numerical calculations confirm this prediction.
