Contemporary powder-based polycrystalline nickel-base superalloys inherit microstructures and properties that are heavily determined by the thermo-mechanical treatments during processing. Here, the influence of a thermal exposure alone to an alloy powder is studied to elucidate the controlling formation mechanisms of the strengthening precipitates using a combination of atom probe tomography and in-situ neutron diffraction. The initial powder comprised a single-phase supersaturated gamma only; from this, the evolution of gamma-prime volume fraction and lattice misfit was assessed. The initial powder notably possessed elemental segregation of Cr and Co and elemental repulsion between Ni, Al and Ti with Cr; here proposed to be a precursor for subsequent gamma to gamma-prime phase transformations. Subsolvus heat treatments yielded a unimodal gamma-prime distribution, formed during heating, with evidence supporting its formation to be via spinodal decomposition. A supersolvus heat treatment led to the formation of this same gamma-prime population during heating, but dissolves as the temperature increases further. The gamma-prime then reprecipitates as a multimodal population during cooling, here forming by classical nucleation and growth. Atom probe characterisation provided intriguing precipitate characteristics, including clear differences in chemistry and microstructure, depending on whether the gamma-prime formed during heating or cooling.

Imaging individual vacancies in solids and revealing their interactions with solute atoms remains one of the frontiers in microscopy and microanalysis. Here we study a creep-deformed binary Ni-2 at.% Ta alloy. Atom probe tomography reveals a random d istribution of Ta. Field ion microscopy, with contrast interpretation supported by density-functional theory and time-of-flight mass spectrometry, evidences a positive correlation of tantalum with vacancies. Our results support solute-vacancy binding, which explains improvement in creep resistance of Ta-containing Ni-based superalloys and helps guide future material design strategies.
The dynamics of homogeneous nucleation and growth of crystalline nickel from the super-cooled melt is examined during rapid quenching using molecular dynamics and a modified embedded atom method potential. The character of the critical nuclei of the crystallization transition is examined using common neighbor analysis and visualization. At nucleation the saddle point droplet consists of randomly stacked planar structures with an in plane triangular order. These results are consistent with previous theoretical results that predict that the nucleation process in some metals is non-classical due to the presence of long-range forces and a spinodal.
Lithium doped sodium niobate is an ecofriendly piezoelectric material that exhibits a variety of structural phase transitions with composition and temperature. We have investigated the phase stabilities of an important composition Li0.12Na0.88NbO3 (L NN12) using a combination of powder x-ray and neutron diffraction techniques in the temperature range 300 - 1100 K. Detailed Rietveld analyses of thermo-diffractograms show a variety of structural phase transitions ranging from non-polar antiferrodistortive to ferroelectric in nature. In the temperature range of 525 K to 675 K, unambiguous experimental evidence is shown for phase coexistence of orthorhombic paraelectric O1 phase (space group Cmcm) and orthorhombic ferroelectric O2 phase (space group Pmc21). The bp primitive lattice parameter of the ferroelectric orthorhombic phase (O2 phase) decreases, while the ap and cp primitive lattice parameters show normal increase with increase in temperature. Above 675 K, in the O1 phase, all lattice parameters come close to each other and increase continuously with increase of temperature, and around 925 K, ap parameter approaches bp parameter and thus the sample undergoes an orthorhombic to tetragonal phase transition. Further as temperature increases, the cp lattice parameter decreases, and finally approaches to ap parameter, and the sample transform into the cubic phase. The continuous change in the lattice parameters reveals that the successive phase transformations from orthorhombic O1 to high temperature tetragonal phase and finally to the cubic phase are not of a strong first order type in nature. We argue that application of chemical pressure as a result of Li substitution in NaNbO3 matrix, favours the freezing of zone centre phonons over the zone boundary phonons that are known to freeze in pure NaNbO3 as function of temperature.
The compositional diffusional-trajectories for a phase separation of gamma(f.c.c.)/gamma-prime(L12) phases are studied in a quaternary Ni-10Al-8.5Cr-2Re alloy, aged at 700 deg.C for 0 to 1024 h, utilizing atom-probe tomography (APT). As the gamma-pri me(L12)-precipitates grow, the enrichments of Ni, Cr, and Re and depletion of Al on the gamma(f.c.c.) matrix-side develop as a result of diffusional fluxes crossing the gamma(f.c.c.)/gamma-prime(L12) interface. The experimental (APT) compositional trajectories of the two-phases, gamma(f.c.c.)/gamma-prime(L12), are displayed in a quaternary phase-diagram, employing a tetrahedron, and compared with the Philippe-Voorhees (P-V) coarsening model which includes the off-diagonal terms in the diffusion tensor for the multi-component system.
Primary {gamma} phase instead of carbides and borides plays an important role in suppressing grain growth during solution at 1433K of FGH98 nickel-based polycrystalline alloys. Results illustrate that as-fabricated FGH98 has equiaxed grain structure and after heat treatment, grains remain equiaxed but grow larger. In order to clarify the effects of the size and volume fraction of the primary {gamma} phase on the grain growth during heat treatment, this paper establish a 2D Cellular Automata (CA) model based on the thermal activation and the lowest energy principle. The CA results are compared with the experimental results and show a good fit with an error less than 10%. Grain growth kinetics are depicted and simulations in real time for various sizes and volume fractions of primary {gamma} particles work out well with the Zener relation. The coefficient n value in Zener relation is theoretically calculated and its minimum value is 0.23 when the radius of primary {gamma} is 2.8{mu}m.
