We prove that the main examples in the theory of algebraic differential equations possess a remarkable total differential overconvergence property. This allows one to consider solutions to these equations with coordinates in algebraically closed fields.
For R(z, w) rational with complex coefficients, of degree at least 2 in w, we show that the number of rational functions f(z) solving the difference equation f(z+1)=R(z, f(z)) is finite and bounded just in terms of the degrees of R in the two variabl
es. This complements a result of Yanagihara, who showed that any finite-order meromorphic solution to this sort of difference equation must be a rational function. We prove a similar result for the differential equation f(z)=R(z, f(z)), building on a result of Eremenko.
The text is based on notes from a class entitled {em Model Theory of Berkovich Spaces}, given at the Hebrew University in the fall term of 2009, and retains the flavor of class notes. It includes an exposition of material from cite{hhmcrelle}, cite{h
hm} and cite{HL}, regarding definable types in the model completion of the theory of valued fields, and the classification of imaginary sorts. The latter is given a new proof, based on definable types rather than invariant types, and on the notion of {em generic reparametrization}. I also try to bring out the relation to the geometry of cite{HL} - stably dominated definable types as the model theoretic incarnation of a Berkovich point.
We study derivations and differential forms on the arithmetic jet spaces of smooth schemes, relative to several primes. As applications we give a new interpretation of arithmetic Laplacians and we discuss the de Rham cohomology of some specific arithmetic jet spaces.
We demonstrate a strong form of Nevanlinnas Second Main Theorem for solutions to difference equations f(z+1)=R(z, f(z)), with the coefficients of R growing slowly relative to f, and R of degree at least 2 in the second coordinate.
We study a stochastic differential equation driven by a gamma process, for which we give results on the existence of weak solutions under conditions on the volatility function. To that end we provide results on the density process between the laws of solutions with different volatility functions.
