Following the global method for relaxation we prove an integral representation result for a large class of variational functionals naturally defined on the space of functions with Bounded Deformation. Mild additional continuity assumptions are required on the functionals.

In this paper, we investigate a class of quadratic Riemannian curvature functionals on closed smooth manifold $M$ of dimension $nge 3$ on the space of Riemannian metrics on $M$ with unit volume. We study the stability of these functionals at the metr ic with constant sectional curvature as its critical point.
We consider variational integrals of the form $int F(D^2u)$ where $F$ is convex and smooth on the Hessian space. We show that a critical point $uin W^{2,infty}$ of such a functional under compactly supported variations is smooth if the Hessian of $u$ has a small oscillation.
A novel general framework for the study of $Gamma$-convergence of functionals defined over pairs of measures and energy-measures is introduced. This theory allows us to identify the $Gamma$-limit of these kind of functionals by knowing the $Gamma$-li mit of the underlining energies. In particular, the interaction between the functionals and the underlining energies results, in the case these latter converge to a non continuous energy, in an additional effect in the relaxation process. This study was motivated by a question in the context of epitaxial growth evolution with adatoms. Interesting cases of application of the general theory are also presented.

In the modeling of dislocations one is lead naturally to energies concentrated on lines, where the integrand depends on the orientation and on the Burgers vector of the dislocation, which belongs to a discrete lattice. The dislocations may be identif ied with divergence-free matrix-valued measures supported on curves or with 1-currents with multiplicity in a lattice. In this paper we develop the theory of relaxation for these energies and provide one physically motivated example in which the relaxation for some Burgers vectors is nontrivial and can be determined explicitly. From a technical viewpoint the key ingredients are an approximation and a structure theorem for 1-currents with multiplicity in a lattice.

Majorana fermions are currently of huge interest in the context of nanoscience and condensed matter physics. Different to usual fermions, Majorana fermions have the property that the particle is its own anti-particle thus, they must be described by r eal fields. Mathematically, this property makes nontrivial the quantization of the problem due, for instance, to the absence of a Wick-like theorem. In view of the present interest on the subject, it is important to develop different theoretical approaches in order to study problems where Majorana fermions are involved. In this note we show that Majorana fermions can be studied in the context of field theories for constrained systems. Using the Faddeev-Jackiw formalism for quantum field theories with constraints, we derived the path integral representation for Majorana fermions. In order to show the validity of the path integral we apply it to an exactly solvable problem. This application also shows that it is rather simple to perform systematic calculations on the basis of the present framework.
