Force detectors rely on resonators to transduce forces into a readable signal. Usually these resonators operate in the linear regime and their signal appears amidst a competing background comprising thermal or quantum fluctuations as well as readout noise. Here, we demonstrate that a parametric symmetry breaking transduction leads to a novel and robust nonlinear force detection in the presence of noise. The force signal is encoded in the frequency at which the system jumps between two phase states which are inherently protected against phase noise. Consequently, the transduction effectively decouples from readout noise channels. For a controlled demonstration of the method, we experiment with a macroscopic doubly-clamped string. Our method provides a promising new paradigm for high-precision force detection.

We report on the simultaneous observation of spontaneous symmetry breaking and long-range spatial coherence both in the strong and the weak-coupling regime in a semiconductor microcavity. Under pulsed excitation, the formation of a stochastic order p arameter is observed in polariton and photon lasing regimes. Single-shot measurements of the Stokes vector of the emission exhibit the buildup of stochastic polarization. Below threshold, the polarization noise does not exceed 10%, while above threshold we observe a total polarization of up to 50% after each excitation pulse, while the polarization averaged over the ensemble of pulses remains nearly zero. In both polariton and photon lasing regimes, the stochastic polarization buildup is accompanied by the buildup of spatial coherence. We find that the Landau criterion of spontaneous symmetry breaking and Penrose-Onsager criterion of long-range order for Bose-Einstein condensation are met in both polariton and photon lasing regimes.
We give a quantum master equation description of the measurement scheme based on a coplanar microwave cavity capacitively coupled to nano mechanical resonator. The system exhibits a rich bifurcation structure that is analogous to sub/second harmonic generation in nonlinear optics. We show how it may be configured as a bifurcation amplifier transducer for weak force detection.

Inversion symmetry breaking allows contrasted circular dichroism in different k-space regions, which takes the extreme form of optical selection rules for interband transitions at high symmetry points. In materials where band-edges occur at noncentra l valleys, this enables valley dependent interplay of electrons with light of different circular polarizations, in analogy to spin dependent optical activities in semiconductors. This discovery is in perfect harmony with the previous finding of valley contrasted Bloch band features of orbital magnetic moment and Berry curvatures from inversion symmetry breaking [Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 236809 (2007)]. A universal connection is revealed between the k-resolved optical oscillator strength of interband transitions, the orbital magnetic moment and the Berry curvatures, which also provides a principle for optical measurement of orbital magnetization and intrinsic anomalous Hall conductivity in ferromagnetic systems. The general physics is demonstrated in graphene where inversion symmetry breaking leads to valley contrasted optical selection rule for interband transitions. We discuss graphene based valley optoelectronics applications where light polarization information can be interconverted with electronic information.

We report on the effect of in-plane magnetic field $B_parallel$ on stripe phases in higher ($N=2,3$) Landau levels of a high-mobility 2D electron gas. In accord with previous studies, we find that a modest $B_parallel$ applied parallel to the native stripes aligns them perpendicular to it. However, upon further increase of $B_parallel$, stripes are reoriented back to their native direction. Remarkably, applying $B_parallel$ perpendicular to the native stripes also aligns stripes parallel to it. Thus, regardless of the initial orientation of stripes with respect to $B_parallel$, stripes are ultimately aligned emph{parallel} to $B_parallel$. These findings provide evidence for a $B_parallel$-induced symmetry breaking mechanism which challenge current understanding of the role of $B_parallel$ and should be taken into account when determining the strength of the native symmetry breaking potential. Finally, our results might indicate nontrivial coupling between the native and external symmetry breaking fields, which has not yet been theoretically considered.
The non-interacting magnon gas description in ferromagnets breaks down at finite magnon density where momentum-conserving collisions between magnons become important. Observation of the collision-dominated regime, however, has been hampered by the la ck of probes to access the energy and lengthscales characteristic of this regime. Here we identify a key signature of the collision-dominated hydrodynamic regime---a magnon sound mode---which governs dynamics at low frequencies and can be detected with recently-introduced spin qubit magnetometers. The magnon sound mode is an excitation of the longitudinal spin component with frequencies below the spin wave continuum in gapped ferromagnets. We also show that, in the presence of exchange interactions with SU(2) symmetry, the ferromagnet hosts an usual hydrodynamic regime that lacks Galilean symmetry at all energy and lengthscales. The hydrodynamic sound mode, if detected, can lead to a new platform to explore hydrodynamic behavior in quantum materials.
