Experimental determination of the topological phase diagram in Cerium monopnictides

We use bulk-sensitive soft X-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and investigate bulk electronic structures of Ce monopnictides (CeX; X=P, As, Sb and Bi). By exploiting a paradigmatic study of the band structures as a function of their spin-orbit coupling (SOC), we draw the topological phase diagram of CeX and unambiguously reveal the topological phase transition from a trivial to a nontrivial regime in going from CeP to CeBi induced by the band inversion. The underlying mechanism of the topological phase transition is elucidated in terms of SOC in concert with their semimetallic band structures. Our comprehensive observations provide a new insight into the band topology hidden in the bulk of solid states.

The recent discovery of extreme magnetoresistance in LaSb introduced lanthanum monopnictides as a new platform to study topological semimetals (TSMs). In this work we report the discovery of extreme magnetoresistance in LaBi, confirming lanthanum mon opnictides as a promising family of TSMs. These binary compounds with the simple rock-salt structure are ideal model systems to search for the origin of extreme magnetoresistance. Through a comparative study of magnetotransport effects in LaBi and LaSb, we construct a triangular temperature-field phase diagram that illustrates how a magnetic field tunes the electronic behavior in these materials. We show that the triangular phase diagram can be generalized to other topological semimetals with different crystal structures and different chemical compositions. By comparing our experimental results to band structure calculations, we suggest that extreme magnetoresistance in LaBi and LaSb originates from a particular orbital texture on their qasi-2D Fermi surfaces. The orbital texture, driven by spin-orbit coupling, is likely to be a generic feature of various topological semimetals.
Because substitutions of BH4- anion with Br can stabilize the hexagonal structure of the LiBH4 at room temperature, leading to a high Li-ion conductivity, its thermodynamic stability has been investigated in this work. The binary LiBH4-LiBr system ha s been explored by means of X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry, combined with an assessment of thermodynamic properties. The monophasic zone of the hexagonal Li(BH4)1-x(Br)x solid solution has been defined from x=0.30 to x=0.55 at room temperature. Solubility limits have been determined by in-situ X-ray diffraction at various temperatures. For the formation of the h-Li(BH4)0.6(Br)0.4 solid solution, a value of the enthalpy of mixing has been determined experimentally equal to 1.0 kJ/mol. In addition, the enthalpy of melting has been measured for various compositions. Lattice stabilities of LiBH4 and LiBr have been determined by ab initio calculations, using CRYSTAL and VASP codes. Combining results of experiments and theoretical calculations, the LiBH4-LiBr phase diagram has been determined in all composition and temperature range by the CALPHAD method.
Combining graphene with other novel layered materials is a possible way for engineering the band structure of charge carriers. Strong spin-orbit coupling in BiTeX compounds and the recent fabrication of a single layer of BiTeI points towards a feasib le experimental realization of a Kane--Mele phase in graphene-based heterostructures. Here, we theoretically demonstrate the tunability of the topological phase of hybrid systems built from graphene and BiTeX (X = I, Br, Cl) layers by uniaxial in-plane tensile and out-of plane compressive strain. We show that structural stress inherently present in fabricated samples could induce a topological phase transition, thus turning the sample in a novel experimental realization of a time reversal invariant topological insulator.

Nanostructuring has been shown to be an effective approach to reduce the lattice thermal conductivity and improve the thermoelectric figure of merit. Because the experimentally measured thermal conductivity includes contributions from both carriers a nd phonons, separating out the phonon contribution has been difficult and is mostly based on estimating the electronic contributions using the Wiedemann-Franz law. In this paper, an experimental method to directly measure electronic contributions to the thermal conductivity is presented and applied to Cu0.01Bi2Te2.7Se0.3, [Cu0.01Bi2Te2.7Se0.3]0.98Ni0.02, and Bi0.88Sb0.12. By measuring the thermal conductivity under magnetic field, electronic contributions to thermal conductivity can be extracted, leading to knowledge of the Lorenz number in thermoelectric materials.
We use first principles calculations to study the electronic properties of rock salt rare earth monopnictides La$X$ ($X=$N, P, As, Sb, Bi). A new type of topological band crossing termed `linked nodal rings is found in LaN when the small spin-orbital coupling (SOC) on nitrogen orbitals is neglected. Turning on SOC gaps the nodal rings at all but two points, which remain gapless due to $C_4$-symmetry and leads to a 3D Dirac semimetal. Interestingly, unlike LaN, compounds with other elements in the pnictogen group are found to be topological insulators (TIs), as a result of band reordering due to the increased lattice constant as well as the enhanced SOC on the pnictogen atom. These TI compounds exhibit multi-valley surface Dirac cones at three $bar{M}$-points on the $(111)$-surface.
